Saw this tonight. I kind of liked it, but my wife really didn't like it.

I watched American Movie and loved it. My favorite part is when they’re recording dialogue of Uncle Bill and the numerous takes they have to do.

My wife has suddenly developed an interest in Marvel movies after watching part of WandaVision with me and then catching up on the rest while I was out of town. We have watched Infinity War, Endgame and Captain Marvel in recent nights - it's basically just what looks interesting to her and what characters she enjoyed from the Avengers movies. Should be fun revisiting Ragnarok and seeing some of the new movies for the first time with her.
Lisa: Who's that guy?
Me: Captain America.
*3 minutes later*
Lisa: Who's that guy?
Me: Captain America again.
Lisa: They sure have a lot of nondescript white guys in these movies.

When you take a sick day, you might as well devote yourself to a 3-hour+ period piece. Still gorgeous to look at, and unlike what some have said, I don't think the story is boring. It's kind of underrated compared to Kubrick's other films, nothing from here has become part of the pop culture (or shown up as a Simpsons reference).

The way he worked out the natural light/candlelight combos in that movie is fucking insane. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it but I should def revisit soon

Decision To Leave is superb. My Dad said it was one of his favorite movies he’s ever seen, so expect that blurb on the BluRay case.

I also saw Triangle of Sadness and thought it was preeeetty good! About as subtle as a terrorist attack but it was very well made

Yeah I'm glad I was able to catch it on a big screen - it was the last movie I saw at Denver Film Fest. Visually stunning but it's very, very bleak.

We saw Tar on Friday. I really liked it and I've been thinking about it a lot the last couple days.

Rewatched Cronenberg's Dead Ringers over the weekend. I enjoy it a little more now, previous times I've seen it have had me saying it's just ok. The way they did the twinning effects - there's a featurette on the Criterion DVD about this - is impressive.
The Weird Al movie has some good, ridiculous laughs, though I don't need to see it a second time.

This is stunning and heartfelt and all around wonderful. Getting a strong feeling that A24 is going to completely botch the theater release of this like they did with Stars at Noon but if this is playing anywhere near you, you should definitely go see it.

What would be a good Christmas present for a college freshman, who, like many college freshmen, has decided they are "into film"?

Drop the Letterboxd handle
But on an actual serious note, Taschen has a lot of great books on a ton of varieties of film that are all very interesting (some insanely expensive so maybe not those), but if they are just starting out maybe a subscription to the criterion channel or one of those movie themed scratch off posters where you use it to mark the movies you’ve seen and try to mark off all of them. When I was a freshman in college someone gave me the Hitchcock and Truffaut interview book and I thought it was incredibly sick, though I had done a decent deep dive on both directors prior. Or since the criterion sale is happening right now maybe a couple of things in the collection you find good or interesting that you think they would like!

I thought about the Criterion subscription, do you think that's worthwhile if they only have a tablet to stream on?

Yeah I don’t think it’s a huge deal, especially early on I watched most stuff on a laptop

Agree that this was an excellent film. A24 has been slowly rolling this out in limited release and hasn't put it on VOD immediately, so it's definitely not being botched. The Stars at Noon thing happened because A24 bought it along with Hulu.

We saw Tar on Friday. I really liked it and I've been thinking about it a lot the last couple days. I saw that this weekend, and I really enjoyed it as well. Though was it supposed to be like, a tragedy of some sort? Also watched Barbarian. Knew nothing about it going in. Thought it was good for the most part, though I have questions.
