did a free trial of Showtime to watch Meet Me In the Bathroom last night.
solid doc. got a little bogged down with random stuff. never read the book though so not sure if the subject matter is 1:1
worth a watch if youre obvz a fan of that era

This was not as good as I wanted it to be, but it wasn't terrible. My students asked if I can show this in class the day before Christmas Break, and I said only if 100% of them turn in their final essay on time. I have never seen a group work so hard today.

Might have to fire that up for tomorrow night. Have wanted to see it, and it didn't play anywhere around here. Edit: Emily the Criminal This was just ok

Emily the Criminal was pretty good. I didn't read anything about it before watching but the reviews I looked at this morning pretty much all agreed that it was an OK movie with a really excellent Aubrey Plaza performance that the rest of it couldn't rise up to and I agree with that. Solid weeknight stream though. just gonna echo everyone else and agree with this one. It was solidly entertaining although nothing amazing, but worth a stream. Aubrey Plaza was great im v excited to stream banshees of inisherin today, was sad I missed it in theaters

Avatar was way too long and didn't fix some things that I hoped it'd fix from the first movie but I liked it overall. I suppose there's some minor spoilers in my review below, but keeping it specific spoiler free and I don't think anything worthy of a spoiler tag. edit- this ended up really long so I spoilered anyway, but it is a mostly spoiler free review with only very surface level spoilers It's really beautiful to look at. The High Frame Rate thing threw me off a bit at first but I got used to it and it did make it feel really smooth and kind of like nothing I've seen before, although every once in a while it made some CGI moments look too video game-y. The CGI was for the most part incredible, and this is probably the best mocapping I've seen in how much of the performance comes through in some of the characters. The world building is still here and probably better than the first movie, the first ocean scenes are just absolutely breathtaking and mesmerizing. Also I saw it in 3D, first movie in years that I have, and the few trailers they showed in 3D had me really worried thinking oh wait, do I actually like 3D? But again, it worked here just as it did for the first film. Mainly because it's typically subtle and not in your face, and that makes the sort of in your face moments work better and made it feel more immersive. Would recommend.
The story tried to do more than the first and hit more themes so points there...but it's not significantly more interesting or better than the first. It works as a vehicle to better set pieces than the first had, but it still is plagued by some bad dialogue at points (albeit not as frequently bad as the first film) and that the villains are cartoonishly evil with no depth whatsoever, besides that the main villain (and him alone) is finally given a *tiny* bit of extra depth. But not significantly so. It's less obviously predictable than the first and as mentioned more complicated and trying to do more, so I think overall it's a better story than the kind of by the numbers predictable story of the first, but it also runs into more plot holes and cases of bad plot writing while trying to be more complicated, so in a way it's a wash.
The other big complaint is goddamn this movie so ridiculously long. The ocean stuff is beautiful and I get why Cameron wants to explore it, but after a bit it starts to drag. There's lots of a little scenes in here that feel like they should have been saved for a directors cut, which is funny because I also thought some of the plot issues I had could have been solved with extra scenes or extra dialogue, despite that I did not want any extra scenes. There's almost three movies here, like a retread of the first movie to introduce you to the world, an explore nature sort of film exploring the ocean, and then a big action movie sequel to what happened in the first arc. It's a lot and by the end of the second act I was feeling it was really starting to drag a bit, which is a bummer after feeling one of the biggest strengths of the first film is that it is paced well and not really boring despite it's length.
Back to positive though, right when I was starting to get annoyed at how long it was, the final act kicks in and it's pretty breakneck for the most part and has some of the most fun action I've seen in a movie in a while. Despite being a CGI fest it all feels heavy and weighty in a way the climaxes of say Marvel films literally never feel, partially because the CGI is so good and by this point your immersed enough to not even notice it's CGI. There's some brutal stuff too I was surprised was in here. There's also shades of lots of pasts James Cameron films in this part, from Aliens to Titanic, and that's fun too. I still think the very end of this could have been abbreviated a bit more, but overall the last act is a lot of fun.
Some other notes -Sam Worthington is a noticeably better actor in this than before -I thought multiple characters were kind of underdeveloped which is wild for a movie this long -Casting Sigourney Weaver again as a new character was a weird and bad choice -The new mechs and technology from the humans is all awesome and creative -there's some action moments that honestly just rule -This world is still interesting enough with enough foundation for there to be better sequels. I hope they get more weird and interesting with the story though
Overall I think it's a better film than the first one but not by much. It's certainly even more of a spectacle, which is saying a lot as the first film definitely was. It's definitely worth watching in a theater if you are ever going to watch it, I feel like the flaws would shine through even more on a smaller screen without the 3D and stuff, as happened with the first film. It's definitely better popcorn blockbuster entertainment than the last few Marvel films, though it's not nearly as tightly written or well paced as say Top Gun earlier this year which was IMO a perfect popcorn blockbuster, but it has more spectacle and high points which make it worth the price of admission for sure.
idk that this film deserved this in depth a review but here you go

Watched Banshees of Inisherin tonight and it really fucked me up. Most of my close friends are really, really old friends and I think I just have an irrational deep seated fear of something like that happening to me. Didn’t expect it to get as dark as it did either based on what I had seen about it before.

Avatar: The Way of Water was genuinely so good. Definitely better than the first. Great story and an absolutely incredible visual feast. See it on the biggest screen possible with the high frame rate projection, it is extremely worth it. I fell asleep 2/3rds of the way into the movie on Friday because it was dark and I was comfortable but I went back this morning and it was worth the price of two expensive movie tickets.

Glass Onion got a little too campy for me at the end but was a generally enjoyable watch. It’s wild that Dave Bautista is the best ex-WWE guy actor

We watched it last night too. It was funny but the unraveling of the actual mystery was way too much tell and not enough show. Also relatively predictable but I feel like that goes hand in hand with the camp factor.
Agreed that Bautista is just a treat.

Also watched Glass Onion last night and I think I agree, I didn't like it as much as Knives Out but it was a lot of fun overall and I'd be happy for them to keep making these movies
also saw Babylon and while I understand why someone would hate it I kind of absolutely loved it

we also watched Glass Onion in the last couple days and enjoyed it, though not as much as Knives Out. although, i am sure its rewatch factor will be high.
and i watched Yojimbo and Licorice Pizza over the break. i'd never seen either and thought they were both good. although, did Licorice Pizza really only take place over one summer? it seemed like way too much happened for it to all be during three months.

also saw Babylon and while I understand why someone would hate it I kind of absolutely loved it I'm seeing that tonight. Reviews seem to be polarizing. We saw The Fabelmans a few weeks ago. The first half kind of dragged, the whole idyllic family+child with aspiring dreams was nothing new. The second half was better. Ultimately, it was pretty good, but not top-tier Spielberg.

Fraser was excellent, but overall it wasn't great. It really didn't escape the "staginess" of a play. And as much as I like Sadie Sink in ST, her character/performance was over the top and scattered. Watched The Black Phone the other night and found it to be an excellent little film. Really captured the feeling of that era pretty well.

Aside from a couple of enjoyable movie-making scenes, I thought Babylon was awful and waaaaaayyyyy too long. Yep. After a while, I was like, "is this fucking thing over yet?" Reminded me of Boogie Nights at times, but without as much connection to the characters. It's a shame, too, because I enjoyed Whiplash, La La Land, and First Man.
