I see what you guys mean by the editing in Oppenheimer. I was a bit grateful for that approach, though, as the first part of the movie is full of a lot of white men standing around and sounding science-y without the drama of the actual project taking place yet. Watching people talk about that stuff is really not that exciting otherwise.
I don't know how good that was. I just know I wasn't in the mood for it. Seemed more like a fall or winter film.

Finally watched Les Mis.
I remember that it got a lot of shit when it came out, but I really liked it. Anne Hathaway was phenomenal.

This was pretty good - fell apart a bit at the end, and they should have just killed off Quill, but the Rocket element was actually incredibly moving/sad.

i watched Amadeus for the first time two nights ago. i knew going in that it was not supposed to be totally historically accurate. i thought it was pretty good and my attention never waned over its 3 hours.

Oppenheimer was like a half hour too long but was generally good- it helped that pretty much every actor was good/great. Seemed pretty historically accurate too which I always appreciate

last night I got redacted and was going to watch Burden of Dreams, the doc about the making of Fitzcarraldo. When it ended after 6 minutes I realized I'd put on the deleted scenes bonus feature on Criterion. It's worth watching, like half of it is Klaus Kinski playing with a butterfly (it seems Werner later used this sequence in My Best Friend)

Just now we watched "You are so not invited to my Bat Mitzvah" on netflix. it had a little too much adam sandler's children, and not enough adam sandler. I guess it was okay, but maybe someone who wasn't bar mitzvahed would appreciate it more.

The one thing that struck me as odd was the actual mother of the lead/wife of Adam Sandler playing the mother of the best friend in the film.

Saw Barbie yesterday finally. Great overall, the last ten minutes were amazing but man the 20 minutes or so before that were pretty rough.
I've had conversations with my five year old niece and eight year old nephew about this movie, they both said they loved it and I just don't see how a child could wrap their heads around any part of this movie other than the visuals.

It's a PG-13 rated film, so I don't think those ages are the target audience.

When I saw it there were a lot of very young children (let's say under age 7) there. Truly don't understand why but they sat through it pretty well.

The lineup and schedule are out for the film festival. Some of the tickets are on sale already, too. Just got one for All of Us Strangers. Sadly, the screening for the new Miyazaki is the same day as open house here at school.

If there’s a chance you can make it to a theater to see Stop Making Sense, you should for sure prioritize it

I had some long plane rides this last week and watched a few movies
Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantamania- Oh man this one was so bad. The world was not very interesting nor did it make much sense to be basically a weirder Star Wars rip-off, constant CGI was a lot, and the art direction wasn't good either. The side characters got no development and yet they tried to have emotional and funny moments with them at the end without earning them that annoyed me. Jokes didn't work. The villain had weird power levels that were all over the place and constantly monologued instead of just killing the heroes which gave them time to do what they wanted to do, a trope I thought we left way in the past or were at least self aware of and this film was not at all. Just a mess, not good!
Weird The Weird Al Yankovic Story: I don't know why I thought this was going to be more of a played straight biopic but I was caught off guard almost immediately and I loved it. I've been wishing we had more fun, dumb comedies being made nowadays and this absolutely nailed exactly what I wanted. It just kept escalating too. I laughed a lot and thought the tone was great and all around enjoyed it a lot. It maybe feels like just an extended higher budget funny or die/youtube sketch but it still worked and was very entertaining.
You Hurt My Feelings: Very good! I loved the general idea and themes behind this one, something I don't feel like I've seen explored much despite that it's kind of a universal thing. I'll say that they ended up having little subplots that also tried to reinforce the theme and having those all happen at the same time as the main inciting incident was maybe a bit much (not all of them, some of it made sense), but overall I really really liked this one. Also fantastic Julia Louis-Dreyfus performance.
Knock at the Cabin: I had heard a few people I know say they liked this one way more than they thought they would, but overall reception seemed pretty mixed so I wasn't sure what to expect. Count me in the camp that liked it. I liked the general idea behind it, performances were great, and while I could maybe understand why someone might dislike the ending I actually did like it, though I didn't really want to spoilers in this post so I won't delve too deep into that. It wasn't amazing or anything, I have a few thoughts on things that could make it better on the margins, but I enjoyed watching it.
