Should I go see Godzilla, Poor Things, or Iron Claw tomorrow? I'll get to all 3 eventually but decent chance it won't be in a theater
Leaning Godzilla

Godzilla was only supposed to be a limited showing, but it was extended, but for how much longer....?
Go see Godzilla.

Agree on Godzilla. But would definitely make the effort to see Poor Things in a theater as well if possible.

We watched The Killer last night. I get what it was going for and it was moderately clever/funny, but it's kind of a slog to get through.

i saw Poor Things over the weekend. it didn't really click for me until shortly before switching to color. from then on, i think i better understood what they were going for. fascinating to watch, much funnier than expected.

Life got in the way of me making to the theater yesterday but I did watch The Holdovers at home this weekend and I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Loved it

food's fine. I got a buffalo chicken pizza that was the highlight of my trip to see the new Exorcist, not that it's saying much

I thought Wonka was really delightful. Chalamet was great and the songs were mostly really good. The character seemingly has nothing to do with Gene Wilder's version though so I'm curious if they'll try to make them connect in sequels.

From what I've heard and read, something is going to happen to Wonka in the new sequels that makes him shut the world out. My guess is that Wonka falls in love with someone but Slugworth et al gets the 'The Empire Strikes Back' moment.

That would make sense, but I hope they pull a Harry Potter and pivot to PG-13 so they can get darker.

Self Reliance on Hulu had a great concept, some genuinely funny moments, and I like Jake Johnson a lot (he actually wrote and directed it), though it didn't really nail the landing and I wish it did a little more with the concept than it did.
Honestly kind of reminds me of BJ Novak's directorial debut from recent, Vengeance, in that it's got a great concept with some great moments and touches on some very interesting themes that I love seeing explored, but just never goes the full mile it feels like it should with them. Although this one is a lost more of an absurdist comedy than that one.

I've been sick all weekend and the weather in Chicago has (obviously) been shit, so it was an ideal weekend to catch up on movies I've been meaning to watch.
The Holdovers: This was my favorite movie I watched this weekend. I realize the premise isn't exactly original but this was so well done. The story, the acting, the soundtrack, and even the editing were all top notch. Giamatti & Randolph are locks for Oscar nominations, and the film itself will be nominated for best pic.
Dream Scenario: This had its moments, but it felt like it was trying to be Adaptation but couldn't quite get there. On the bright side, Dream Scenario boasts the best sex scene of 2023 for sure.
Dumb Money: This felt like low-rent Adam McKay. There were some missteps like Nick Offerman being miscast as Ken Griffin and Pete Davidson being cast as anyone, but even still this was still very watchable.
May December: This also had its moments, but also dragged at times. I could see Portman or Moore or both getting nominated, they were easily the highlight of the film.

Felt like it could’ve been done in about 30 minutes. Paul Dano is a cool guy though.
