Been trying really hard to not watch/expose our 4 y/o to excessive violence so I'm mostly watching animated movies these days, but I ended up giving in and allowing him to watch the new Ninja Turtle animated movie Mutant Mayhem and it's easily the best thing TMNT related of all time. I know, ridiculous right? But it seriously is. He and I have watched it like six times in the last month or two and I'm not tired of it.
He wasn't as smitten with Spiderman Across the Spider Verse and I can totally see why but to me it's hands down better than Into and I thoroughly loved it, as did the wife.
Other than that, we watched the Christmas special for Diary of a Wimpy Kid which is now animated I guess, and it's not terrible. Kinda shocked it didn't get an Oscar nom (not really).

The Zone of Interest is exceptional my only gripe with it is it doesn't really work in a vacuum. you have to know at least a little something about auschwitz for impact. i figure most people do, though. however, i feel like i know a decent amount about it and still i had no idea what "canada" meant when they're talking about the fur coat (read about that afterward) and i completely missed the concept of the garden being in such good shape because it's fertilized by ashes. incredible sound too. I think part of the point he's making, though, is that even if you don't know anything about Auschwitz, like...what kind of blind eye are turning to the world? Wouldn't you at least wonder what all that screaming and noise and pollution are in the background or do you just not care because it doesn't affect you that much?

Watched Elemental over the weekend and I enjoyed that a lot more than I expected. Nothing about the concept or trailers had pulled me in, but it ended up being a better concept than I thought it would and it was a cute story. Not Pixar's best but it was worth a streaming watch.

i watched Barry Lyndon over the weekend. there's a significant resemblance between mid-70s ryan o'neal and mid-10s jonathan groff in at least a half-dozen scenes.

We saw Bob Marley: One Love which I was not particularly looking forward to as I am sick of the biopic genre, but it was not bad. Missed a lot of dialogue, though; it was the rare instance where I would have preferred captioning. It was also the rare instance where I wasn’t annoyed by the two women reacting/commenting throughout the film - they were legit hilarious.

Totally agree about the captioning. We saw the film a few days ago. We were not too impressed with it, but it was ok.

I'd love more open caption screenings in theaters in general....I know so many people without hearing impairment who watch everything at home with captions on that it's hard to believe that more open caption screenings would be viewed as a bad thing.

This is a great point and I'm a little surprised in this day and age it isn't an option, however I can also see the presence of captions interfering with the director's intended theatrical presentation of the film, whereas at home you have the option to watch however you please

Let's get the ball rolling on the "directors are ableist" discourse

Let's get the ball rolling on the "directors are ableist" discourse I fully believe Christopher Nolan probably is based on how his films sound and how adamant he was that people see his film in theaters during a global pandemic.

Killers of the Flower Moon Past Lives Oppenheimer The Holdovers Barbie Anatomy of a Fall
Zone of Interest American Fiction
Poor Things Maestro
I found those last two a bit tedious, but still mostly enjoyable. A very strong group of nominees for a very strong movie year. The Iron Claw was my #1 overall, with KotFM second

Bottoms is legitimately hilarious in the "this is so dumb" genre but I laughed from start to finish and Marshawn Lynch must be protected at all costs in this society.
Also watched Finch for the first time- not great, not bad, probably wouldn't watch it again. The real life apocalypse we are currently living through is much more interesting tbh

I thoroughly enjoyed Bottoms.
We’ve only seen four of the best picture noms so far. Mrs. Doso put on Barbie with director commentary a couple of weekends ago and that improved my overall impression.
Barbie The Holdovers American Fiction Maestro
Will probably watch Oppenheimer and Killer Moon before the Oscars. Not sure about the others.
Maestro was a total waste of time and money.

I watched a couple of movies of over the long weekend. One Love was average at best but the music was fantastic. Yesterday I saw The Taste Of Things and that was excellent. I think it's one of my favorite movies of 2023. I've never seen food look so good in a film. Glad I ate before I went lol.

We watched the Oscar-nominated animated short films at the Music Box yesterday. Three were outstanding, one was okay, and one was a pile of shit. Worth seeing IMO.
