Yep.
When it comes to Lily Gladstone's character, I think there are a number of ways another actress could have credibly brought that person to life. There just wasn't that much that she had to do. Additionally, the feelings I have about that character are less a result of anything the actress did than they are a result of the character's predicament.
With Emma Stone's character, I'm really not sure who else could play that character and how they might approach it. The role required her to be constantly engaged--mentally, emotionally, physically--in order to convey her character's constant and considerable change and growth over the course of the film. It made me feel like I underestimated what Emma Stone was capable of and made me question why I underestimated her.

It made me feel like I underestimated what Emma Stone was capable of and made me question why I underestimated her. This is really interesting since I think the exact opposite. Lily Gladstone's character was so reserved and underwritten that only a terrific performance could bring it to life. Whereas Bella Baxter was so over the top that I think any decent actress could have done what Emma Stone did.

See? There's room for all of us.
Still, though, what you're saying about Mollie doesn't necessarily conflict with what I'm saying. The role is underwritten, so yes, a terrific performance would be necessary to sell it, but I still think there are a number of actresses who could give a terrific performance in that role and there are more ways to do it.
There might be a number of women who might be able to perform Bella Baxter, but how good would they be?

Maestro sucked.
3-1/2 hour movie pfffffffffttttttt. Get an editor, Marty.
Holdovers was fine, nothing more.
I think Eric LaRue is probably better than any of other films I saw last year.

The love for The Holdovers is baffling to me. I just thought it was a mediocre white man's nobility fantasy: "It makes me feel good to blow up my life to help this privileged young white boy who has faced some adversity yet will still remain much more privileged than most people. Also, that one black woman was a nice lady." Great post

I agree, I haven't seen a performance like Emma Stone in Poor Things since Tugg Speedman in 'Simple Jack'

Poor Things is going to be on Hulu eventually, I'm guessing? Saw that Oppenheimer will be on Peacock mid-Feb, so that's good. Annoyed that Killers of the Flower Moon doesn't appear to be available via rental at the moment.

Watched The King of Comedy on my flight earlier this week and that might be lowkey my favorite De Niro performance.

Byes are Casino, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Departed? + Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island I went off IMDB scores for that. Kind of surprised those two were rated that highly, they beat out Raging Bull even

The Zone of Interest is exceptional my only gripe with it is it doesn't really work in a vacuum. you have to know at least a little something about auschwitz for impact. i figure most people do, though. however, i feel like i know a decent amount about it and still i had no idea what "canada" meant when they're talking about the fur coat (read about that afterward) and i completely missed the concept of the garden being in such good shape because it's fertilized by ashes. incredible sound too.

American Fiction was really funny. I've never really seen Sterling K Brown in anything before but I thought he was especially terrific.

Godzilla Minus One was very good. I also saw it in black and white and it's almost hard to imagine it in color, I thought that really worked well. Also I'm glad it's back on premium screens because I saw it on one and the sound was awesome the first Ginza attack with the atomic breath was just absolutely jaw dropping. Good movie

I ended up having a 3 month trial of Apple TV available through the purchase of my tv (I bought it in 2020, but sure!). Anyway, watched it this weekend. Loved how Scorsese treated the source material for the most part. Especially loved wrapping up the film using the radio show format. It gave the topic more respect than just scrolling through page after page of text.

I think this worked a few ways, including as an indictment of the “true crime” industry that actively exploits the stories of real people without their consent. Scorsese appearing in that scene feels to me like he’s admitting he is also complicit in that by putting this story to screen. Interestingly I do think a few other films have touched on that theme this year, notably May December and to a lesser extent Anatomy of a Fall. Wonder if there’s going to start being a larger backlash to that culture.
