Rewatching Aliens with a friend. First time seeing it since 2012. Still dull, poorly paced, bloated and unenjoyable. In fact, I think Alien is the only worthwhile movie in the franchise.

Aliens is near the top of my list of movies I need to see. Somehow haven't taken care of that yet.

I'm one of the few that really liked Prometheus.

That's probably true, but I'm at least mildly interested in that particular story line.

Alien is pretty much a masterpiece. Aliens is one of my favorite sequels ever although I wouldn't also call it a masterpiece. Prometheus is so poorly written that I just hated it, despite it having a few redeeming qualities. I'm not sure if ill get around to the newest Alien. I know Alien 3 and 4 are supposed to be bad but I have the box set so I should probably watch those one day just to see

Alien and Aliens are both masterpieces for separate genres. If you don't like action movies, then you probably shouldn't bother watching Aliens b/c that's what it is.

If that's the case then fuck the haters, which I didn't realize any of those existed for the first two films in the series. Hell, Sigourney got nominated for an Oscar for Aliens b/c of her entire change of character. Girl power!

Girl power! it may be best to do in chat/dm cause everyone's heard my shtick 10000000 times but i just think James Cameron is probably the scummiest person in filmmaking and consequently i can't stand any of his films (except maybe the Abyss on a good drunk night)

Don't like anything else by him. And Aliens wasn't really his to begin with, so even though he directed it, I don't completely consider it his "film."

And Aliens wasn't really his to begin with, so even though he directed it, I don't completely consider it his "film." this is fair. i still detest the "action blockbuster" style it took because of him, but the story itself as an integral part of the franchise is perfectly good. also LoT, Alien3 is surprisingly decent in retrospect (definitely flawed but pretty well paced and has its moments.) Resurrection was definitely a joke, for all intents and purposes.

Baby Driver was good but not really anything too special. At times it basically seemed like every other generic car/heist film. Also was strongly thinking throughout the movie that it was basically something made for high schoolers. Film ends and theater lights turn on, entire theater is packed with high schoolers. So yeah.

"Trolls will be trolls, I suppose." Lol, yeah, sharing an opinion is trolling. mhmmmmm Aliens fails in every way for me. It loses the atmosphere and tension of the original by being bogged down in unnecessary extended sequences. There really isn't much action and it's stiff and unexciting, and difficult to follow at times. The "macho" nature of the marines is not my bag, although that's very much a personal taste thing. Ripley seems like a bit of a lame duck for much of the film. I should note that I've only seen the director's cut version but it's Cameron's preferred cut so I don't feel too bad judging the film on it. Maybe the theatrical cut's trimmed fat would it more enjoyable to me. As it is, not a film I enjoy watching at all, especially not for 2.5 hours. Was staving off sleep hard. Alien is brilliant tho

I'm one of the few that really liked Prometheus. Loved Prometheus too. Really wish we had gotten a true sequel with Shaw and David going on space adventures.

The Big Sick is really fantastic but I cant figure out why they filmed the two exterior shots in Williamsburg when they clearly filmed B-role in Chicago also they put on a bar in the Playground Theater v normal things to be annoyed about.

Bizarrely, was just thinking of you today and wondering what you're hitting up at Summerfest this year (since I think Ryan Adams there last year was the last time we hung out?) And as it happens, I'm visiting my parents and we started watching Okja - but didn't get too far into it. I trust Tilda Swinton, but... What did you think?

Baby Driver was great. It started off perfect and died off a bit, but that's the best use of a soundtrack I can recalll.

Really loved The Beguiled. Glad Sofia Coppola is returning to form at least a little bit. I defend The Bling Ring because I had a lot of fun watching it but I recognize it isn't great. I don't know if anyone can confirm, but it looked like she primarily used natural lighting, except in scenes at night where there were candles. Even if she didn't do that, the effect still looked great and gave the film a really natural feel. It took a bit to get going but the reward was more than worth it. Really interesting tension builder.

We saw The Big Sick on Saturday and loved it. Great acting, very funny, good writing. Nice to see Ray Romano put to good use. Also, Holly Hunter 4evar and evar.
The Alamo Drafthouse opening reels were more entertaining than usual, too.
We also noticed the Chicago/New York discrepancies right away. Didn't obsess over it, but I did find myself mildly obsessed over identifying the posters in Emily's apartment. Finally got a good shot and saw that one was for a Promise Ring show at Metro. Couldn't identify the other, but I liked the artwork.
