also <3'd baby driver. first 2 thirds were perfect and the last act was fine tho i thought it kinda broke away from the style and themes of the rest of the movie.
great acting all around and the cinematography was perf.

We saw The Big Sick on Saturday and loved it. Great acting, very funny, good writing. Nice to see Ray Romano put to good use. Also, Holly Hunter 4evar and evar. The Alamo Drafthouse opening reels were more entertaining than usual, too. We also noticed the Chicago/New York discrepancies right away. Didn't obsess over it, but I did find myself mildly obsessed over identifying the posters in Emily's apartment. Finally got a good shot and saw that one was for a Promise Ring show at Metro. Couldn't identify the other, but I liked the artwork. Kumail had a prominent Pelican poster and Kurt spent half the movie in a Touch and Go shirt which made the Williamsburg shots more frustrating because someone was at least like "hey in 2006 someone in Chicago would have a Pelican poster on their wall lets put some thought into this." this is something that didn't actually bother me but was amusing

Also Jamie Foxx deserves more roles. Dude is incredible. Agreed, here's a gem from the Baby Driver IMDB trivia: "On the first day of filming, Jamie Foxx watched Jon Hamm on the monitor and said "He's too handsome" and then walked away without another word."

Caught the morning showing of Baby Driver today. Loved it. Has anyone on the board watched Okja yet? thoughts? Bizarrely, was just thinking of you today and wondering what you're hitting up at Summerfest this year (since I think Ryan Adams there last year was the last time we hung out?) And as it happens, I'm visiting my parents and we started watching Okja - but didn't get too far into it. I trust Tilda Swinton, but... What did you think? Hey! Tell your folks that I said hi. I was browsing streaming choices and chose The Girl With All the Gifts (which was awesome) instead of Okja. I feel like Okja is one that I'll need to be in the right mood to watch. As for Summerfest, I have tickets for The Shins on closing night. There wasn't much else that I was excited about on this year's lineup.

sorry folks, didn't like Baby Driver as much as ya'll did. Great soundtrack, great action, but didn't care for the story, poor character development, and cliches all over the place. Jamie Foxx was the highlight definitely, Jon Hamm was Jon Hamm. Was sad to not see Jon Berthanal return later on, as he's always fun to watch. Kevin Spacey annoyed the shit out of me.
It borrows from so many great films - Drive, Singing in the Rain, Reservoir Dogs - but lacks the charm that those films have. Edgar Wright also sucks at writing female characters. I think the stylish action pieces are some of the best though that I've seen in awhile, if not a bit repetitive. I may need a second viewing, but as of right now it wasn't my favorite.

The thing is, I can't really say you're wrong about anything there, aside from your opinion on Kevin Spacey. It comes down to whether you love the set-pieces / music shtick enough to paper over the weaker areas. It's a film that operates in a romanticized world, and I can be a sucker for those.
Second viewing was definitely even better than the first.

For those of us who went to Shaky Knees, if I'm not mistaken, several of the streets near us were used in the first chase scene.
Seen any BAD movies lately? Why yes. Yes, I did. ALIEN COVENANT.

He's despicable in Baby Driver, which is no different than how he is in House of Cards. He has some great lines though. I'll give it a second viewing for sure, but not until it's streaming.

Fair enough. I've yet to personally tire of him playing southern with a musical drawl.

Wonderful, I went into it with zero nostalgia, and was very happy with the mix of jokes.
The fact that they don't talk over any actual movie lines was a surprise to me, though.

If that's the case then fuck the haters, which I didn't realize any of those existed for the first two films in the series. Hell, Sigourney got nominated for an Oscar for Aliens b/c of her entire change of character. Girl power! it may be best to do in chat/dm cause everyone's heard my shtick 10000000 times but i just think James Cameron is probably the scummiest person in filmmaking and consequently i can't stand any of his films (except maybe the Abyss on a good drunk night) He sucks, and when he did to Alien was pretty shitty.

What are you referring to? Making one of the greatest sequels in cinematic history? (maybe only beaten by Terminator 2, another Cameron flick).

Your choice of a better sequel example is odd.

Terminator 2 doesn't really hold up well.

Terminator 2 doesn't really hold up well. #agreetodisagree But Cameron was tasked with making sequels to 2 extremely groundbreaking films (IMO). We all know how often these kind of films fall on their faces. It also had me thinking irt Wretched's opinion on Cameron and hoo boy I wouldn't watch, listen, read anything if it was based on the niceness of the people involved. I mean, I watch Billy Bob films, Polanski films, etc.

Rory Scovel's Netflix special is super funny. I liked him from Comedy Bang Bang but I didn't expect to like his standup this much.

Spider-Man Homecoming was easily one of my favorite MCU movies and I think my favorite movie of the summer so far. Kind of loved it

Yeah that Spiderman was actually really good. Surprisingly so. In a weird twist, everything BUT the action sequences are perfect. Keaton-as-Vulture is great but I feel like they didn't know exactly how to stage fight scenes with him...
