Turns out I'm going to be in New York for Octfest Sept 6 thru 10. Seeing Phil Lesh at the Capitol Theater on the 6th, but I think I'm staying in Manhattan. Getting to this fest seems like it is going to be an experience in its own. Any tips are appreciated!

The only way to get to Governors Island is to take a short ferry ride; unlike Randalls Island, there aren't any bridges. Depending on where you're staying, you can catch a ferry from either Brooklyn or Manhattan. I think the Brooklyn ferry charges a few bucks, but the Manhattan ferry is free. I think they both have departures every thirty minutes on the weekends and they'll extend the hours of operation to accommodate the festival. Note, the Manhattan ferry is easily accessible via the subway, but the Brooklyn ferry is 0.75 to 1 mile from the nearest subway stops (depending on which line you're using). Not a dealbreaker, but a little bit of a hassle. The Brooklyn ferry dock by Pier 6 on the southern edge of Brooklyn Bridge State Park. If you arrive early, it's worth checking out the park which has a lot of cool features. A walk on the Brooklyn Heights promenade above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is also a nice diversion. If you're inclined to grab brunch before the fest on Saturday or Sunday, our favorite restaurant ( Alma) is just a half mile south of the Brooklyn pier. Get a table on the 3rd floor roof deck and enjoy the view with some excellent Mexican food. It's also worth going early at least one of the days and exploring Governors Island. You can rent a bike (or a Citibike) and pedal all around (there are no cars on the island). Walk to the top of Outlook Hill for stunning views of the city and the harbor. Check out the hammock grove and the big ol' slide. I haven't been yet, but Island Oyster looks fabulous as well. There are a bunch of abandoned barracks and other buildings on the island and one of NYC's most unique high schools, the Harbor School, is based there. Details about all of the above and more can be found on the Governors Island website: govisland.com/. They've had a few festivals there before, so they should have the logistics figured out by now. I was toying with the idea of taking my stepson to see Flaming Lips for his birthday before I realized it was a 21 & over fest. Should be a good time!

Man, this is great, thank you doso. That rooftop at Alma looks amazing. Definitely going to put some effort into checking that out. I think I have just about all of Friday with no obligations. Very interested in what kind of crowd this fest will draw. Feeling like it should be similar to Pitchfork?

Sunday of Octfest looks pretty enticing but I don't think I can stand seeing the same Flaming Lips show for the third time.
I went last year and the crowd skewed older. 21+ has a lot to do with that, also the headliners GbV and Built to Spill (RIP Charles Bradley) don't attract many lower 20 year olds. The crowds were pretty sparse and you could easily see any band. Some people were there only for the beer, the beer area had more people than people watching the bands at times. Food was an absolute disaster. There were only two food vendors with lines about an hour long. Because of this, the fest had pizzas delivered and festgoers swarmed and devoured them as they came. It was quite a sight.
That might change this year with a new location and bigger lineup. I'd imagine Saturday will draw a much larger turnout and younger crowd because of the lineup and because Saturday.

Not sure if there're any Hold Steady fans among the NYC board folks, but Massive Nights is back at the Brooklyn Bowl! Going down November 28-December 1, with the first show being a Stay Positive 10th anniversary show!
I've only seen them once, at their Chicago residency last year, and I was dealing with the worst of my slipped disc in my back so I couldn't even stand up at the time. Very very very excited to be in the midst of the crowd for this one - rather than sitting down in a corner of Thalia Hall lol.

Would you happen to have a link/password you could share? mookie If you're jonesin' for another THS Stay Positive show, the airfares between Chicago and NYC are generally dirt cheap right after the Thanksgiving travel period has ended.

That would be a great time, but I think that Jersey City show will be the limit of my Hold Steady travel for this year

50% off octfest is pretty nice, but I'm still waiting for the various contests for free passes like they did last year.

Good point. Plus if it's selling this poorly, cheap tickets should be available the day before or the day of.

This doesn’t help you, but I’m going to try to go in November. They have a Citi presale too.

Interpol HoV is open - but it's a lottery like the Chicago National one last year. Never seen Interpol, and not looking to pay face to see them at MSG (tho I bet that gets cheap on resale), so hopefully this works out.

So I've posted in a few forums, Reddit, Facebook and haven't really gotten much info, so I thought I'd try you guys. I'm looking for a single ticket to Springsteen on Broadway anytime between October and the close of the show (with a few exceptions here and there). I know there's the lottery and the box office but coming from Chicago, so I need a little more notice than those both provide plus I need to book airfare and a hotel. I know tickets are costly, but the most I'm looking to spend is around $600 (so the mezzanine level). Does anyone have any insight on how I might be able to snag one?

It was just the day when I looked yesterday. Every day lists the opening time, so not sure if you can specify a time once you check out.

I know one guy who has one or two pairs of tickets for upcoming shows. He's seen it already and he's not planning to go again, but last time we talked he seemed deadset on selling the "extras" for a profit. I'll reach out to him and let you know if I get anywhere. Other than that, I'm not sure what you can do other than continuing to check Ticketmaster and Stubhub for singles. There's a single available for tonight's show in the mezzanine for about $475. If you're desperate, you could commit to a flight and hotel and target a Tuesday show in October. Flying in Tuesday and flying out Wednesday should be a cheap airfare and October is still two months before the show ends, so perhaps the mad dash for final tickets won't be in effect just yet. And a Tuesday night show should theoretically be the least desirable night, so maybe you'd luck out and someone would drop the price for a single on Stubhub below your target amount. And, of course, enter the lottery for that date and queue up at the box office early to grab a ticket if any are released for that evening's performance.

[that's how I had an MSG ticket in hand to Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary before I got on the plane].
