My gf and I are in nyc for the week. Can anyone recommend some good ice cream spots? We went to see Illinoise tonight and the choices are pretty dismal.

If you are hanging in Brooklyn and spend any time in Prospect Park, people around here love the Uncle Louie G’s on Vanderbilt and PPSW. I like it and it conveniently just a block away from Casa Del Doso, but I find the texture to be a little gummy.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with the soft serve from a Mister Softee truck. They are all over Manhattan, but if you’re not seeing one, you can locate the nearest truck on their app.

big gay ice cream is pretty good, though the last time i was there was a location that doesn't exist anymore. morganstern's on houston is also a good spot. out in forest hills, eddie's sweet shop is an institution.

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is the GOAT Used to go to Ample Hills a lot, but not since their latest bout of ownership drama so idk if it's still good anymore I'm planning to try a few of the spots on this list this summer: ny.eater.com/maps/best-soft-serve-nyc - the only one I've been to so far is Marvel (way out in Long Island / upper Queens) but it's amazing.

Ample Hills used to be great. I thought they all closed after the last round of bankruptcy or whatever but I guess it’s just the two nearby locations that are currently defunct.

Plus nyc-noise.com has a calendar of under-the-radar & DIY shows

Otherwise if I'm free that night I might go see the Peeps again.

yeah I won't be in town the night of the 13th unfortunately. Getting dinner with some friends on the 10th and that pink stones show seems super early but it's not a 0% chance, LMK if you are considering it. Probably won't be able to go to a show the night of the 12th but if there wa any kind of must see exhibit or something to do during the day rn would be curious. That nyc noise/tapped in tip are both good calls thank you

Any nyc folks going to the Peter Hook show at Brooklyn Steel this Friday? Gonna be in town for the weekend for a work thing on Saturday but have that night off, and this looks like the best show happening.

Honestly, monasterymonochrome probably offers the best recos but lots of good stuff in/around Red Hook. The one downside is there’s no subway nearby. But you can bus it to the F. Ride in the last train car, get off at 34th Street, and you’re one avenue away from the MSG entrance. Mrs. Doso’s favorite restaurant, Alma (almabk.com), is not far from Red Hook. Their rooftop seating provides a great view of lower Manhattan. I love their cocktails, chilaquiles, chicken enchiladas and short rib enchiladas. Avoid the chicken fajitas, though, which used to be a regular menu item, but were recently offered as a special and have fallen off in quality. In Red Hook proper, Red Hook Tavern is known for having a great burger. I like Hometown Bar-B-Que a lot. Haven’t been to Brooklyn Crab in years (Mrs. Doso doesn’t do seafood), but they have nice views of the harbor and a solid menu - more of a seafood shack vibe than a high-end situation. Oh, and the Food Bazaar on the waterfront is much larger and has a much better selection than the typical city grocery store, in case you’re looking to do some meals at the Airbnb. Also not far away in Carroll Gardens is Frankie’s 457 Spuntino, an excellent Italian restaurant that does high quality smaller dishes as opposed to the massive portion red-sauce places that are a dime a dozen around here. Wonderful cocktails and always a great wine selection, too. Their pizza place, F&F, is right next door and it’s the absolute best thin crust pizza I’ve had in New York. The crust in particular is phenomenal. Seems like Jimmy Fallon has been going there frequently, so hopefully it doesn’t become even more popular. I never go drinking in Red Hook but I always see a lot of cool looking bars in that neighborhood. Other Half’s flagship brewery and taproom is right by the Smith & 9th subway station if you are into beer (especially hazy and/or high ABV IPAs). And I can recommend a couple of good cocktail bars on Smith Street: Barely Disfigured and Clover Club. If you’re looking for suggestions in other areas, let me know! Are you going to any YLT shows?

I’ll have more time later to think on this, but seconding all of Doso’s recs here. Alma, Hometown BBQ, and Frankie’s are all great. The best sandwich shop in the city is also in Red Hook - Defonte’s! Old school Italian spot with massive subs and great vibes. You’re also near Court Street Grocers, which I can’t remember if was in the original post. Another excellent sandwich spot. Did Doso mention Sunny’s? Em and I don’t go to a lot of bars, but that one’s our favorite. Best divey spot in the area, and they have music almost every night. Can get mad crowded tho.

Oh that reminds me: if you’ve ever seen the film Made with Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, the climatic scene was filmed at Sunny’s (exterior for sure; not certain if the interior was used).
I think Made was a flop follow-up to Swingers; definitely worth 90 minutes. Peter Falk is great in it and so is Faizon Love. Multiple Sopranos stars have small/supporting parts and Dustin Diamond appears as himself. Pre-cancelled P. Diddy also appears in a supporting role.

This is awesome, thank you! I misread the map and it looks like we're actually in Carroll Gardens, literally around the corner from Frankie's 457 Spuntino. But looks like all of these recs are super close anyway. We're doing Phish on 12/30 and 12/31, so 12/29 would be the only night we could do YLT. We have the Avett Brothers musical at 2pm that day, and we're deciding on whether we should double up on Broadway and see All In, the John Mulaney/Fred Armisen play, another night of Phish at MSG, or YLT at the Bowery. Should be a fantastic night no matter what we choose.

We decided to YOLO and come two days early in December. Got a dirt cheap Airbnb in a neighborhood I've never heard of.
Glendale? Seems like the Bedford Park of Queens.

Glendale has escaped my notice, but looks like Finback Brewery is in that neighborhood. Looks to be a bit of a transit desert (subway-wise; I’m sure there are bus routes), unless your Airbnb happens to be close to the M or the L.
