Wife and I are planning a trip to NYC this summer (approx June 30-July 5). So far we're planning to do some touristy stuff - MOMA, Broadway show, 30 Rock tour, etc. I heard that Midtown Manhattan is the best neighborhood to stay in - T/F? She was looking at Airbnb's last night, I thought they were frowned upon in NYC? Is a hotel better? We stayed in midtown on two of our trips and it definitely makes life easier since there are tons of train lines you can get to easily to get anywhere around the city. We've only stayed in hotels, so I don't know about the airbnbs though.

Personally, where you stay depends on what you're doing / your comfort with public transit. If you're gonna be centered around midtown, which the things you listed are, then it may make sense to stay there. I think I'm generally more pro-Midtown / touristy stuff than the average NYC resident, but I would personally get burnt out staying 6 days there. It's all very bright/busy/crowded. But if that spatial convenience is a plus - it may be worth the price. That said, if you're planning on moving around the city more - or into the boroughs at all - it really is relatively easy to stay elsewhere and take the MTA pretty much anywhere you want. I live off the B/Q lines in central Brooklyn and I can get anywhere you listed fairly easily within 40 minutes or so. I think as long as you're near a 1/2/3, 4/5/6, or one of the lettered lines that mainly move North to South, you can get most places in Manhattan with relative ease. So, idk if this helped at all, but basically if you're down to take the train, you can open up where you stay to quieter, cooler, likely cheaper neighborhoods. But if you're looking to mainly walk / cab your way to places, then Midtown makes the most sense for sure. As to hotels/AirBnb, I'm not the expert. My knowledge is mostly Brooklyn based, and there aren't a ton of hotels here. I know hotels are the more ethical option re: gentrification, but idk how the price difference breaks down in NYC particularly. I do know that Emma and I have gone back to mainly booking hotels on our trips (usually out west) because they're less hassle and have strangely become cheaper again. Airbnb is fucking crazy sometimes.

+1 to everything monasterymonochrome said. I would just add that I’ve noticed the city empties out (a little) on holiday weekends, so it’s slightly easier to get into restaurants and such.

Free festival in Bushwick - pretty solid collection of artists I would only see at a fest, so this is fairly ideal

Took me a second to process that Le Ren and L’Rain are two different acts In related news, BRIC just announced that L’Rain is their “first ever artist curator, working on this season of Celebrate Brooklyn!”

Any albums you'd recommend to start with? I'm excited for this one off of reputation, but I haven't actually heard one of her records.

I honestly am not at all familiar with her back catalog, but it didn’t matter a bit when I saw her at Bowery Ballroom in 2019. She played most of her (then) new record which was produced by Brandi Carlile. Her relatively large band was kick ass and she was in great spirits. One of the best shows I saw that year.

Btw, Nikki Lane is worth seeing, too. I caught her a couple of times in 2016 and she was solid. I like the new record she released last year, too.

Overall it's nice tho, just pissed that an artist who's in my Top 10 wishlist is playing one of the two weekends I'm out of town. Rickie Lee Jones is playing the other weekend lol, but I just saw her at Big Ears so it's a'ight. Added to the calendar: -- June 7 - Taj Mahal / Corrine Rae Bailey -- June 15 - Kara Jackson (opening for some dude idk) -- July 8 - Kelele / Liv.e -- July 14 - Oumou Sangare -- July 27 - The Wallflowers -- July 29 - Rickie Lee Jones -- August 4 - Indigo De Souza / Vundabar Then Cale on the 19th. I guess The Head and the Heart closing the season is a big deal but idgaf about them. Paging doso to the thread

Yeah John Cale is a must see. Haven’t had a chance to dig into the lineup yet but it’s about damn time. I sent a semi-nastygram to BRIC Membership this morning after the lineup wasn’t released at 10am - probably just coincidental but the lineup was published an hour later.

Went back to see what I wrote the week after: "Rickie Lee Jones: Onto the balcony of the Bijou - Rickie's set was an experience. Not always locked in musically (some vocals felt slightly off, band was great but sometimes struggled to keep up with her timing), but when it came together it was thrilling. "Living It Up" was my highlight, tho Pirates was chillingly beautiful." I'd say that my memory over the last month has largely hung onto the positive moments - especially her vocal highs during "Living It Up." If I was in town, I'd see her again.

John Cale is doing a free show when I'm out of town. WHyyyyy the second big [non-local] show I ever saw at cabaret metro was cale with chris spedding on guitar. he had not yet put out words for the dying. I nuttily thought he'd do some lou reed / velvet covers, which of course he did not. it wasn't until three yrs later that I finally saw lou reed live.

NY people - a friend of mine who lives in NYC recommended Lombardi's for pizza. Is this a good spot or too touristy with ridiculous wait times? What are some other good spots for pie? We're staying about 15 blocks north of Times Square.

We're staying about 15 blocks north of Times Square. I've never been to Lombardi's, but have been meaning to try it since, IIRC, it's the oldest pizza shop in the US. Usually a crowd when I walk by it though. Most of my go-to recommendations are fairly far from midtown (L&B Spumoni Gardens in Gravesend, Brooklyn and Sal & Carmines on 103rd St), but I think neader might be able to help here lmao
