How are you doing on the covid front? Hearing about tons of cases from those shows - one of my friends says she knows at least 20 positive cases so far. Also not a huge fan of Levain myself but it may interest you to know we are getting one in the west loop (ofc) We feel totally fine thankfully. And that is good news about Levain but I feel like I haven't been to the west loop in like 2 years

Phish was fucking awesome Friday night. It was the makeup show from NYE so we got three sets. The third set was bananas; highly recommend watching videos to see the incredible visual experience. Floating whales! Got a great slice of pizza after the show but can't remember where. Listening to S2 from 4/22 right now and really enjoying the SYSF > Light sequence. So much great music from this run.

Already want to plan my next visit since I had such a great time. Not sure where I should stay next time since we've done Brooklyn x3, Astoria, and the Upper West Side. Not Staten Island. Also, sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Absolute Bagels. I think the last time I was there was pre-pandemic.

I work at Columbia and have been switching over to Bo's Bagels across Morningside Park in Harlem when I want a pre-work bagel. Would wholeheartedly recommend if you're ever in the area.

Gonna be in town daytime hours only next Friday and Saturday. Are there any cool exhibits or day time events to check out? Got all day Friday. Saturday considering just hitting the botanical garden assuming it’s worth it because I gotta be in westchester around 4 or 5 but if there’s something cool happening during the day Saturday in the city I’d try to make it. Also if anyone has any recs near botanical gardens/fordham for food I’d love to know. If anyone wants to get Katz’s Friday hmu it seems like I’ll be solo

There's also an awesome Woody Guthrie exhibit at the Morgan, if you can get over the weird dissonance of displaying Woody Guthrie's personal belongings at the home of JP fuckin' Morgan. Edit: Oh, and I've not spent much time around Fordham, it's a long haul from where I live. But it's somewhat near Arthur Avenue, which is loaded with great Italian places. Only been once though so I'm not the best source for specific recs up there.

Will definitely hit the new museum as Katz's will be my lunch spot friday and the Morgan is next to grand central station which is where my train leaves from/arrives. Didn't have either exhibit on my radar so thank you!

I'm going to be in New York next weekend (1/14-1/16). What's happening that is cool and good? NYC Winter Jazzfest is that weekend and the lineup is pretty great, if that’s your speed. I’m out of town or else I would be there for sure. Otherwise all I have on my notes doc are some TMBG shows that’re probably sold out but might be worth checking in on. The Tapped In app is a great resource for checking what shows are happening on any given day too (it’s usually updated weekly so don’t worry that it’s sparse for that weekend rn). As is Ohmyrockness.com

Unless you’re my brother-in-law, in which case I’m making meatballs when you and your family visit us on Saturday night. But 50/50 you cancel because you’ve already jam-packed the day with a bunch of crazy tourist shit and you’re probably going to feel too wiped by the time evening rolls around. Oh, actually rango420 went to the Lou Reed exhibit last month and said it was worth checking out. www.nypl.org/events/exhibitions/lou-reedI’d probably go check out the comedy show at The Bell House on Sunday night ft. David Cross, Jo Firestone and Phoebe Robinson. thebellhouseny.com/calendar

Looks like the Wolfgang Tillman exhibit just ended but the Pinnochio exhibit is still very cool at MOMA and I always enjoy wandering around MOMA more than the Whitney which always makes me a bit anxious with sheer number of people. The Edward Hopper exhibit at the Whitney is definitely cool though.

I didn't go to any of the cool fun new restaurants really (which all seem to be wine bars?) and most of the bars I went to had kind of weird torched vibes but Thai Diner remains very good and generally affordable for that part of the world.
Still nobody in the world does smoked fish better than russ & daughters or smoked meat better than Katz's
I also pulled up at noon and got $30 stand by tickets for a matinee of The Piano Lesson on broadway which was both a good production and also just very cool to watch sam Jackson work up close as well as my other favorite actors tenet protagonist and cyborg

Yeah, I think I'll try for some rush tickets. Was also considering Salesman or A Strange Loop.
thanks for the suggestions folks. David Cross/Jo Firestone/Robinson seems likely.

Hi New York pals. I've never been to NYC, and I'll be there for a Four Tet Squidsoup show at Avant Gardner in Brooklyn on May 11th. I'll be staying with a friend in Brooklyn from Thursday morning the 11th until probably Saturday the 13th sometime (small chance I stay until Sunday morning if something really worthwhile pops up or comes to my attention.) Since I've never been, I was hoping some locals or people with more information could recommend things to add to my itinerary, whether it be restaurants, museums, etc. I don't mind if it's touristy, as I am tourist who has never visited. No idea is a bad idea! I'd probably like to try a traditional New York pizza slice, maybe a bagel/bagel sandwich lol. I probably wouldn't want to travel all across New York all day, but am open to taking the subway/bus. Thanks in advance =)

I thought the Guggenhim was pretty overrated, so I wouldn't waste your time there. It is the touristy thing to do, but walking around Central Park is great to do. It's super easy to get just about everywhere using the subway there, so just get the 3 day pass or whatever so that you don't have to think about reloading the card while you are there.

I'll try and throw something together this afternoon - would probably be a good thing to have as a shorthand when friends are in town anyways.
Do you know what neighborhood you're staying in per chance?

MOMA was also free after like 5pm on Friday which I’m not sure if they still do but if they do it’s a must do for your first trip

I always recommend a middle-of-the-day (i.e., not rush hour) ride on the Staten Island ferry. It’s free, it’s not a lengthy ride, and you get a great view of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Don’t bother leaving the terminal when you get to Staten Island - just get off the boat and queue up to take it back to Manhattan.

Wife and I are planning a trip to NYC this summer (approx June 30-July 5). So far we're planning to do some touristy stuff - MOMA, Broadway show, 30 Rock tour, etc.
I heard that Midtown Manhattan is the best neighborhood to stay in - T/F? She was looking at Airbnb's last night, I thought they were frowned upon in NYC? Is a hotel better?
