Washington Heights/Harlem or Astoria could also be options, if the kid isn't super concerned about being near all the ~hip~ music venues.

Absolutely fucked situation on the subways this morning. I take a different line and had no idea what happened until I got to work. Glad it seems like everyone's gonna be okay.
Also really really hoping they catch the shooter before the end of the workday, because I'm already dreading the commute home. Both in terms of safety and delays.

Midtown recs also appreciated.

Sal & Carmines Pizza on 102nd is money, there's also Saiguette and Doaba Deli for great Vietnamese and Indian food, respectively. Lower down, around the 70s-80s is less my thing, but there's some killer old-time bagel & appetizing places, Barney Greengrass and Zucker's. BG is better, but idk where exactly you'll be at. There's also a Parm, which has good sandwiches, and - of course - Gray's Papaya for post-show hot dogs.

Anyone have any Upper West Side recs? Staying there next week for the Phish shows. Midtown recs also appreciated. Gray’s Papaya is a classic. Be sure to get a cookie from Levain Bakery on 74th. Jacob’s Pickles is amazing. If you don’t mind venturing a few extra subway stops north of UWS, go to Absolute Bagels one morning. I’ve also read good things about Mama’s TOO! for slices in that area, but I haven’t been. Midtown: Pony Bar is a craft beer heavyweight joint. Han Bat has solid Korean food. If you want to get a solid Indian meal at a reasonably priced, charmingly cramped restaurant, try Bengali Tiger - it’s not particularly special, but I’ve had two memorable meals there. If you have never been to a Hillstone, it’s worth going at least once. There are two near Midtown. I’ll post the article that made me want to go there. The French dip made me want to go back. Nintendo store if you’re into that. I haven’t been to the newly relocated Rough Trade, but it looks good and they book a lot of in-store performances. Oh and I think Other Half opened a location right there, too.

I'm really looking forward to it; it's a bit of a departure for an opening night. Have you ever been to an opening night? The line to get in tends to be crazy long, so either get there early and queue up or arrive late in the hopes that some people have left early and you can slip in. Of course, if the weather sucks, then all bets are off.

One addition: Threes Brewery is opening their new Manhattan location in Moynihan Train Hall (expansion of/across the street from Penn Station). Their lagers/pilsners/saisons, etc. are a nice counterpoint to Other Half’s high ABV IPA offerings.

after seeing your post, my deep dive into information about what is up with this group currently, shows that the two main members of the last poets that I saw twice in two days, not in 2001, as I had originally thought, but in 1998, are still the two main members of the last poets (at least 5 last poets have died over the years).

My quick trip to NYC last weekend was super fun. I think it was my 5th time there and it continues to be my favorite place to visit.
Got to the Upper West Side around 1pm on Friday. Got an underwhelming bagel from Absolute Bagels that would still have been better than like 99% of bagels in Chicago, and then got really good coffee at Gertrude. The weather was beautiful so we spent the next couple of hours walking around Central Park. Very magical day. Then we got a really great dinner at Jacob's Pickle before heading down to MSG.
Phish was fucking awesome Friday night. It was the makeup show from NYE so we got three sets. The third set was bananas; highly recommend watching videos to see the incredible visual experience. Floating whales! Got a great slice of pizza after the show but can't remember where.
Saturday morning we got coffee and a biscuit at Fillup and then proceeded to walk around and do a food crawl up and down the UWS. Barney Greengrass was closed so we Went to Zabar's for the first time. I love that place. I want one in Chicago tomorrow. Got a great lox bagel there and then shared a wonderful cookie from Levain. Got the lunch special at Gray's Papaya and had sauerkraut farts the rest of the day. Got a couple of beers at Gebhard's, which was a cool spot but maybe the most expensive draft I've ever had that wasn't at like a rooftop bar at a nice hotel. Got a couple more beers at Amsterdam Ale House. Good spot to shit and drink. Stumbled upon an amazing oyster happy hour at Mermaid Inn, which ended up being my favorite meal of the weekend. Everything was delicious and weirdly cheap.
Phish was really great Saturday night too. Set 1 was a heater soup to nuts and set 2 was super fun. That was my 34th show and I turn 34 this week.
Already want to plan my next visit since I had such a great time. Not sure where I should stay next time since we've done Brooklyn x3, Astoria, and the Upper West Side.

How are you doing on the covid front? Hearing about tons of cases from those shows - one of my friends says she knows at least 20 positive cases so far.
Also not a huge fan of Levain myself but it may interest you to know we are getting one in the west loop (ofc)
