Anyone have Chinatown recs? We're gonna try to squeeze in some good food after Broadway and before Phish one of the nights. Do I ever! -- Golden Unicorn: Big fancy dim sum parlor that serves great dim sum at all hours -- Joe’s Ginger: Outpost of the more crowded/renowned Joe’s Shanghai, BUT it features the same delicious/famous soup dumplings -- Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles: Amazing little spot that’s exactly as advertised -- Mei Lai Wah: My fave pork buns place - but more of a take-out / grab n go situation -- Green Garden Village: a little off the main Chinatown zone, but great rice rolls here. I’ve heard good things about Tonii’s for that too. -- Super Taste: LES section of Chinatown, but amazing noodle soups at a lil hole in the wall. Not a ton of seating tho, but great vibes. -- Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory: An essential stop - best ice cream joint in the city. I love the black sesame, but the red bean and matcha & oreos don’t miss either. Edit: and there's sooo many others I still need to try (heard good things about: Big Wong, Uncle Lou, Deluxe Green Bo, and late-night cheap eats staple Wo Hop). Lots of folks swear by Nom Wah for dim sum, but I didn't have a great experience there. Coulda just been me tho - it's a really cool old spot with loads of fans.

Gonna eat too many pork buns and blow chunks during Blaze On

The original is on Forsyth but apparently there’s a “New” Spicy Village that could be an expansion but could also be former employees going rogue. I’ve been to the OG Spicy Village and their hand-pulled noodles are outstanding. There was also some sort of savory (but not scallion) pancake that we ordered and it was a delicious side. Very inexpensive. But cramped - 20 seats tops in that place.

Didn't have time to go to Chinatown this weekend unfortunately, but bookmarking those lists for our next trip (presumably a year from now for NYE again).

Just a note that Hanukkah 2024 is from Xmas Day through New Year’s Day, therefore the annual Yo La Tengo shows are expected to take place that week, if you’re so inclined.

dinner recs for the lower east side? no real parameters yet, except something relatively nice. No restaurants like that off the top of the dome, but I would make time for Katz’s and/or Veselka. If you’re into cocktails, Amor y Amargo at 6th St & Ave A is exceptional (more East Village than LES).

last three trips I had a few James Beard/bib gourmand-y dinners in the LES general area and honestly nothing I would fully recommend. Only place I've returned to in the area is Thai Diner which is great but no res's and expect a wait/its definitely a scene.
Have wanted to go to Dhamaka last two times I went but have never been able to get a res and have been unsuccessful trying to walk in. That would I guess be my blind recommendation.

If you want to do a steakhouse thing, I like & Son Steakeasy (andsonnyc.com) on 14th Street. They do a nice steak and all the sides are included. Not gonna win any awards, but it’s a good meal.

Definitely interested in Hurray for the Riff Raff, especially for free. I’ve somehow never seen Los Lobos, despite their ubiquity. They will be on my list, too.

Summer shows are incredibly schedule dependent (still got some trips to finalize, etc), but those two should be great. Lincoln Center also put out their free series the other day, but I still need to dig through their site and create a calendar.

And I couldn’t agree more - the summer schedule fills up quick. My priority is the lineup at Celebrate Brooklyn! but it seems like we’re still at least two weeks away from that announcement. <eyeroll>

Something is off about this. Only one benefit show so far (they’ve usually announced four benefit shows by now) and no big Opening Night… the first show is the Saturday afternoon Family Day on June 8, then the one benefit concert on the following Saturday and the first regular show is June 19. And only 18 shows total compared to 27 last season.

And only on weeknight show. Everything else is on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

At least the hit rate is really high with these tho - lots of killer shows. Most interested in: Ana Tijoux, Bab L'Bluz (Habibi Fest night), Watchhouse, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Charlotte/Bolis. Highly highly highly recommend seeing Son Rompe Pera, one of the best acts at Big Ears this year. They're opening for Fishbone (!) Gonna likely be outta town for Seun Kuti otherwise that would be my #1 most anticipated show of the season.

The annual New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Park series is June 11-14 and June 16 (indoor performance on Staten Island). The Central Park performance is on Wednesday; Prospect Park is Friday. Program includes Beethoven, Elgar, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mendelssohn plus some new shit from Carlos Simon and a couple of “very young composers”.

Anything particuarly exciting happening in this city June 26-28? Seems like I might be out that way for my girlfriend's work trip and might need some stuff to do if I'm not being arm candy at whatever she's doing out there. I'm assuming we're staying close to Manhattan mostly but I also don't know if I'm actually going yet
