Listened to The Smile album again in prep for tomorrow and it’s still really great stuff. Excited for the show

Stereogum's write up of this band's new record piqued my interest. First minute had me going, "uh, I don't know...those vocals aren't doing it for me..." A few minutes later, "never mind, this kicks ass." This is good stuff right here, good call

Not what I expected a band called Smut to sound like (very clean and almost shoegaze-ish), but very good anyways

Real weird but strangely catchy and compelling album courtesy of the Quietus' AOTY list. Most of the songs here create a droning beat with only a chord or two, lots of rhythmic repetition, and heavily accented speak-singing from an exceedingly British sounding guy. Each song features maybe one or two phrases repeated with slight variation until it feels more like a trance than a song. This song here was my favorite - reminded me Robert Wyatt's "Heaps of Sheep."

V much enjoying this so far. CTRL was a real slow burn for me but this is hitting some spots in my brain right away. It is probably too long but most albums are too long these days. What a good start to 2023 here in December 2022.

Pretty clear that 1. this isn't nearly as bad as I remember it being and 2. It inspired so much music (that I don't personally care about but is loved by certain peoples) that came after it's making my head spin

I (tentatively) stand by this and the two records that came after it. They're silly and derivative but they're fun as hell and occasionally even clever.

Still on my bluegrass kick Is "Church Street Blues" on this album? Probably the best song of all time Looks like it's on his next album, Whisky Before Breakfast. I'll check that one out this evening. Gonna spend some more time with John Hartford first.

Finally listened to the new Phoenix album and I think it's really great, but I can't decide if the first song is horrible.

I know everyone's big on Bad Bunny and rightfully so, but this is another great non-English album from this year

Exceedingly underrated YLT album. I'd only given it a half-interested listen last year, but I'm keeping it on rotation this week (alongside perennial favorite I Am Not Afraid of You...). "More Stars Than There Are In Heaven" is a genuinely A-tier YLT track, it belongs among their other slow burning epics a la Blue Line Swinger, Story of YLT, Night Falls in Hoboken, etc. Reminds me a lot of Low's "Nothing But Heart." Then we get two extended atmospheric pieces that are just gorgeous. "The Fireside" for the gentle ruminations and "The Glitter Is Gone" for one of Ira's best feedback freakouts on record. This may just be the headiest Yo La Tengo record. The actual songs that precede it are nice too. "All Your Secrets" is the highlight, but I love James' "I'm On My Way" and the nerdy take on James Brown with "Periodically Double or Triple." Hope I get to catch a track or two from it this Hanukkah season.

Wow this Special Interest album is terrific. Didn't love their previous material but this one kinda blew me away.
"Midnight Legend" is SOTY material.

This album is so perplexing to me. First time listening to the Flecktones. And there is so much going on here that is so corny. Like, the Kenny G smooth jazz sax tones? The slap bass? But then almost invariably Bela produces some strange alchemy and the band hits these absolutely transcendent moments. Like, I'm really enjoying it - but also facing some internal resistance to it?
