In BRBR's absence, and with thebosma beginning his trip through the REM discography, let's talk all things REM in this thread. To kick things off, I admittedly had no idea about Chronic Town until I started the RUTREMRe:M podcast. Hard for me to pick a favorite, they're all kind of neck and neck - but I guess this would be my knee-jerk reaction to picking one.

i've had a REM playlist for years that i love but i really oughta go through the whole discography again as well. been far too long and probably lots of A+ tracks that didn't make my playlist.
gonna need something to get through the insane amount of bullshit data that came to my desk over the holiday anyway.

Yeah, so I only really had processed that I knew "Perfect Circle" before I listened to Murmur but all of these tracks are like, immediately added to my favorite R.E.M. songs list. Big fan of this one. It's gonna be hard to not just exclusively listen to this one over and over again.

It's weird, even though I just did it this year, it synced up pretty well with when my last job was at its worst, so I have some unfair negative connotations associated with some of the post-Document stuff. For example, all I can remember about listening to Green is being really anxious and pissed off in the car almost every time it was on. The roller-coaster of that job led Up to be a diamond in the rough of their later albums. It'd all be worth revisiting.

Dude, wait til Reckoning I decided to build/keep a running "Favorite REM" playlist while I did this, and for the first few weeks it was just those two albums haha. I didn't care much for Fables (or half of Pageant, tbh)

Green sounds like freshman year of high school to me.
Love that video above with long haired babby Stipey.
Fun fact, R.E.M. played my old coworker's house in C-U in the 80's.
This post is very old.

Loved Reckoning. Another album full of exclusively good tracks. I didn't care for the first track or two on Fables of Reconstruction but it's growing on me the further it goes.

None of the tracks off of Life's Rich Pageant really gripped me individually but as a whole it was still nice. I've moved onto Document which I enjoy quite a bit halfway through, and I know about half of the remaining tracks and like those. This is a good band and I enjoy them a lot also I'm so sorry that this thread is just me talking to myself about a band you have all been into for years

Just finished my last album for the night (probably) with Green, which was exceptional and it's wild to me that it's my third favorite of what I've heard so far. Below, all of them ranked.
1. Murmur 2. Reckoning 3. Green 4. Document 5. Fables of the Reconstruction 6. Life's Rich Pageant

Fables is where it's at for me. It's so different than the rest of their albums. But you really can't go wrong with anything up to like 96.

Holy shit you're tearin' through these
I'm gonna listen to Fables again today. I listened to Pageant a few times since my run-through to try to get more into it, but other than Begin the Begin and Flowers of Guatemala I wasn't a huge fan. I feel like I should love Fall on Me, I just don't.

1. Murmur 2. Automatic for the People 3. Reckoning 4. Green 5. Document 6. Out of Time 7. Fables of the Reconstruction 8. Life's Rich Pageant Out of Time was an album I had listened to a couple times growing up thanks to the fact that my dad was in a CD club in the early 90s. It felt like a bit of a departure from the rest of their albums and overall felt less cohesive. Still, the highs are extremely high. Automatic for the People is.....incredible holy shit. Probably had heard the most tracks off of this one before actually hearing the album, but putting them all together is phenomenal.

The only one I own on vinyl (though I intend to change that soon). I guess I would go.. 1. Automatic For the People 2. Murmur 3. Reckoning 4. Document 5. Life's Rich Pageant 6. Out of Time 7. Green 8. Fables of the Reconstruction just based on what you've heard so far. Monster would be next, which would probably slot in between LRP and Document for me. It's overdone, but there's something about it I love.

From what I've heard so far...
1.) Reckoning - a perfect album, no wasted seconds and my "favorite song" from it has probably changed a half dozen times over time.
2.) Automatic for the People - maybe my most listened to record from 9th to 10th grade? Still holds up as a beautiful listen. "Find the River" is their most moving track, period.
3.) Murmur - One of the best debuts ever. My gf and I go back and forth a lot over Murmur v. Reckoning - we both agree "Talk About The Passion" is killer tho.
4.) Life's Rich Paegant - This one has been growing on me recently. "I Believe" is a top ten R.E.M. for sure, love the banjo takeout at the beginning.
5.) Document - Some strong tracks (Strange, The One I Love) but it doesn't grab me all the way through like the ones above do.
6.) Fables of the Reconstruction - Only R.E.M. record I've been nonplussed about. Given it 3-4 tries and it doesn't catch for me. Maybe I'll try again today, idk.
Chronic Town is also stellar, and I've yet to hear Green, Monster, etc. This band rules tho, really wish they were still together. Probably my #1 reunion left on the table.

Probably my #1 reunion left on the table. I'm half hearted about whether I'd see them if they reunited.
I saw them on the tour for reckoning,* because my graduate school roommate and his gf wanted to see them; saw them in 2005, because the better half wanted to see them. not a single song that was on the first setlist was on the second setlist.
*former lolla board member Atomic saw the tour for Reckoning on the east coast, while I saw the tour for Reckoning in StL w/ the dB's opening.

before R U Talkin REM Re: Me, I had only spent any time with the first three albums. I've enjoyed getting to know more of their stuff and have come to really regret missing that tour with the National and Modest Mouse. At the time I didn't care to plunk money down for it since I was bigger fan of the openers and had recently seen both of them multiple times.

I was considering picking up the deluxe reissue of Monster for the Litt remix LP until I just heard how much he neutered WTF Kenneth
Nice to have the vocals up front but feels empty
I guess this is why you don't drastically remix albums people have known for 25 years!
