it's possible if i had to rank the favorites i would go 1. giannis 2. ad 3. harden I just don't think Giannis wins it since realistically the Bucks are probably the 4th or 5th seed. I doubt voters will give it to a guy on like a 48 win team in the East.

I kinda think Donovan Mitchell has a real shot at MVP this year :/ wha It would basically be the exact same scenario as Derrick Rose winning in 2011. Not saying Mitchell is going to be the best or most deserving player this year, but the parallels are there: 1.) 2nd year playing taking a leap into genuine stardom 2.) Jazz get the 1-seed over a clearly better team (i.e. 2010-2011 Heat) 3.) Voters getting bored of giving the MVP to the same guys. I don't think it's impossible that the Jazz have around 60 wins this year, which would have given them the 2nd seed last year. And Mitchell reminds me so much of Young Derrick and Young Wade. I think he's a legit star.

I like him and think he'll be a star, but I have a really hard time imagining him making a better case than ALL of Lebron, Kawhi, AD, Harden, Giannis, Steph, Westbrook and KD. So much talent right now. Plus I think voters are wary of a Rose-like MVP argument now

So much talent right now. Plus I think voters are wary of a Rose-like MVP argument now Aside from Giannis, all of the players you listed are either going to be rested for a dozen or so games and/or are massive injury risks (Davis, Westbrook). I do think games/minutes played matters to MVP voters. I wouldn't say it's likely, but there's definitely a chance someone like Donovan (or even Lillard) wins this year just because their teams will need them to play a ton of games/minutes and the raw numbers will be there. I think Utah will be aiming for a top 3 seed this year in an attempt to get past the second round, and they'll need every bit of Donovan to get there. Same with Portland, though they're obviously not nearly as good as Utah.

You have to do more than lead a team to the 3rd seed to win MVP.

I think they have basically a zero perfect chance of getting the 1-seed. The Bulls scenario you referenced wasn't in nearly as competitive of a conference.

I mean, the Jazz are already either the second or third best team in the West. It's not inconceivable the Warriors could coast to a 2 or 3 seed, a la Miami in the Rose year. Houston has taken a step back, in my opinion, and they're not built with as much depth as last year so they could drop in the standings when the inevitable CP injury happens. There seems to be a pretty big drop off in the West after those three teams.

Jazz ended strong last year but I’m not convinced they’re as far above the rest of the West’s fray as people seem to think right now. Saying they might be better than Houston is pretty bold, even if Houston took a step back (which seems likely but remains to be seen). Jazz took one game from them last year.

Rubio was injured for the entire series and Mitchell was forced to play out of position at point, while they started an undrafted rookie at the 2. But whatever, it’s not worth arguing about. I’m up for a beer bet though, if you’re interested.

Has there even really been an explanation for his problem with Towns? I've only seen some speculation that it was related to effort, but this clearly goes beyond that. Have you guys not heard the "Jimmy fucked KAT's girl" stuff? Or are you just not buying it? Honestly, I thought that was one of the best stories to come out in years and I'm genuinely surprised that doesn't happen more in pro sports.

i'd take that bet in a fuckin second
jazz as even a three seed isn't a sure thing - thunder, blazers, and nuggets can easily challenge for that as well

Nuggets are better this year. I think they under performed. Thunder are better minus Melo. Blazers are a weird team, but they'll be competitive.

I'd bet Jazz are the number 4 by the end of the season.

More fun projections from 538: 2018-19 NBA PredictionsBulls projected for 27 wins, 4th worst in the league. Jazz projected to finish 3rd in the East with 55 wins (behind Houston's 56 and Golden State's 63) for those of us who bet our life savings on Donovan Mitchell to win MVP.

I can't decide if the Sixers are going to be good this year. Bucks, Raptors Pacers all had better offseasons. The season-ending win steak was fluky but Simmons and Embiid should still be getting better. Bench is probably weaker but Fultz is a big wild card.

If Fultz shows up they'll do no worse than 3 in the East
