I'm glad I procrastinated on this one and decided to start it on my drive in - I did not realize it would be flurrying and that the city would be moving at 50% of all posted speed limits (which are generally 35). It made for perhaps the most enjoyable atmosphere in which to hear this record, second only to donning a white sport coat and drunk-eating some crustacean.
My intro to (and only real familiarity with) Buffett is the "Songs You Know By Heart" disc which I got for maybe my 13th birthday? That said, the only songs I know off of this are "He Went to Paris," "Grapefruit Juicy Fruit," and "Why Don't We Get Drunk" - all of which I love.
The pleasant surprises were "Cuban Crime of Passion," "The Great Filling Station Holdup," and "My Lovely Lady," but the whole thing is more or less great. I'd pick this up next time I saw it without hesitating.
I couldn't submit this post without a big shoutout to Greg "Fingers" Taylor, the Coral Reefers' harmonica player who is ALL OVER this album in the best way. His lead accents in "They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More" are serene.

Always a nice surprise.

We're getting into the stretch of albums that were the soundtracks of my vacations and summers growing up. White Sport Coat, Living and Dying, A-1-A and Latitudes/Attitudes are albums that are always close by at any family function.
lets boogie y'all.
*oh and Son of a Son of a Sailor too, of course.

I feel like we're all falling behind a bit on our JB Yes sorry. GF had surgery this week and my grandmother was in town so most of my boarding was being done on my phone. I will do an update tomorrow with a revised schedule. I also ask that this thread be moved from this weird death zone that I have no idea why it was put in here

Gonna download these so we can listen to them in the car on the way to Iowa. That certainly sounds like a great way to spend 6 hours.

Pencil Thin Mustache- I love that JB is probably 25 but is opening his album with a nostalgia tune. Goofy, creepy, sad, catchy...classic JB
Come Monday- what can be said. obviously a classic. back when the JB hits were sad too. Killer solo on this one
Ringling, Ringling - a great composition that maybe gets a bit too jumpy on its second half which unfortunately sells out some of the lyrics like "Imagine all the heartaches and tears/In twenty-seven years of beer" as a fun observation vs a killer one.
Brahma Fear- I love how this has so many hallmarks of southern rock and outlaw country but it is completely unconcerned with being lumped in with those genres. A nice sad little drinking ditty elevated by its personality.
Brand New Country Fair - It's so funny to hear a song like this so far from the context it was recorded. Like in 2018 in the time of Luke Bryan its very hard to imagine making track 5 of your album a like Glen Campbell or John Denver diss song.
Livingston's Gone To Texas - man knowing what i kind of know about JB its sort of astonishing to hear songs where he's not giving out TOO much. Like this is more on the nose and less artful than his contemporaries on similar topics but its also still well written and towing an interesting line.
The Wino and I Know - lol man JB makes being a musician sound lame as hell lmao.
West Nashville Grand Ballroom - not quite as deep as he imagines it to be and especially shallow if youve ever heard like a guy clark song but i like how busy the composition is without being over the top
Saxophones - Who is JB mad at here? I wonder what this JB would think of late 80s JB. This is also the most "modern" produced song which is not a compliment. This song is 4 hours long or maybe its just late.
Ballad of Spider John- Obviously Willis Alan Ramsey is great its a nice reminder that JB ran in these circles. Interesting to hear this tune with the world worn blues sanded off. a real pretty take.
God's Own Drunk - As far as i can understand this is jimmy buffett covering a comedy routine from 20 years before and it seems to go over as well as that sounds but I guess this is one of JBs biggest hits so hey what does anybody know in the end of the day
The highs are not as high as Pink Crustacean but its still quite a nice album. definitely not as good an album but still has consistent hitters with really only a couple lows. side a is fire. its 4 in the morning.

I think this is my favorite record thus far. Maybe a couple clunkers but I really love a lot of this
I’ll ride for the stupid comedy routine at the end.

Hey, Brand New Country star was the only outright (new) clunker on this one! Way to go! Way to already be cribbing from your previous albums! I'm stunned God's Own Drunk was pre-Nighthawks at the Diner.

BUT HE IS ALSO A LIAR
Despite the title, not all the songs on the album are in 3/4 time signature. Four tracks use 12/8 time: "Pencil Thin Mustache", "Brand New Country Star", "God's Own Drunk", and "West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown," with a repeating 17 bar pattern, actually making the true time signature of this song's verses 51/8. The lyrics of "Nautical Wheelers" on Buffett's subsequent album, A1A, refer to "living & dying in ¾ time" and the song is also in 3/4 time signature.

A1A (1974) I don't remember the exact setlists for the 3 times I saw the late Steve Goodman, but I know that he did "door number 3" live at least 1 of those times, and maybe all 3.

this is the first album so far where most of the songs are good but everyone in the band including JB himself spends the whole time trying to sabotage it.

Yeah if there's one thing I noting from my first listen is that these song sound very busy.
Highlight thus far is "Stories We Could Tell".
