I would temper expectations about FischMas. It looks like it is not going to be a ticketed event, so that is good. Hopefully, they will be offering some good and rare beer, but it is almost certainly not what we knew and loved back when they were in Jefferson Park. Live music there tends to be friends of the owners and...less than great. Ditto, the food.
We still go there occasionally, and we want them to succeed, but we just don't love it like we did the original. Bummed that the bottle shop closed, but being so damn close to Binny's definitely didn't help.

The Paste best-of-decade lists are great lists, and contain great beer writing.
Now someone send me crowlers of those Austin Beer Garden Brewing lagers!!!!

There’s an approximate shit load of the BCBS at the Binny’s in Peoria so I grabbed a bunch of it and am now embarrassed at how much I spent on beer.

I bought one for 12 and the cherry variant for 24. Enjoying the regular right now. Its sold out in most places up here in the northland. There were only 2 of the cherry left at our mega (actually really shitty) liquor store Lukas (this branch sucks, the southern most one is excellent).
Pretty tasty stout if ya ask me.

I haven’t been to a liquor store yet and I’m fairly confident I’ll be able to find variants. It doesn’t sell particularly well here.

So Half Acre on Balmoral is replacing their food menu with Big Star Tacos in 2020. No whiskey selection or big pitcher margaritas.

Pretty sure that Fischman is closing soon. Mrs ten15 saw a facebook post from some neighborhood group that said Dec 27 was to be their last day, but now we can't find the post. Also, their website is inactive. :/

OH i forgot to tell that story.
so we went to "fischmas" a few saturdays ago cause we had nothing to do and wanted to see the new spot.
the place was barren. like, us, 2 other patrons who weren't drinking, and the staff. that was it. one family came in for food but seemed to leave before they ever ordered anything.
they had one woman show up around 5 to play acoustic covers but the PA wasn't working so it didn't last long. the hope for the day folks had a table set up but by the time we got there, they seemed to have left and just kept all the free schwag out for people to grab at their leisure.
the tap list was incredible standard for a chicago bar. no exclusives or holiday releases or any good deals.
so yeah, definitely not surprised that it's not gonna last. :/

Wow. Worse than I thought. The food has never been better than ok. We went somewhat regularly after they opened, but we got a distinct "stink eye" vibe from the bartender who was always there so we stopped going.
Agree about the beer list - meh. Also, their P.A. system has never worked well - even the recorded music they played was weird/fuzzy/quiet.
I am sure that they spent a lot on the build out - feel sorry for Gus and Shanna. But they were clearly over their skis.

Woooof. I briefly checked the event page that day to see what they were tapping, but there was no update. What a bummer.
I wonder why it never worked? The old one was always so fun and the bar was busy even when there wasn't anything going on.

I have a few observations.
1. They took on more space than they should have. And the space was weirdly compartmentalized due to staircases for the upper level apartments. 2. The bottle shop was doomed because they are about 1/4 mile from a new Binny's 3. They were not restaurant people and did not hire a restaurant person to help with the menu. Not sure how experienced their "chef" was either. 4. Part of the fun of the old place was the dive bar ambiance. 5. They couldn't get the same kind of tap lists they used to at the old place.

I can't disagree with any of that. We only went in once and the food and service were very meh. They seemed to get into a number of weird Facebook fights too. Not a great look.

I bought some beer about a month ago from a company based in Belgium that specializes in (duh) Belgian beers. Order page said it shipped over a month ago, and then I never received any other updates. Started reaching out to the company via email and never received a response. Even tried calling! Finally left a bad review on their Google page and received an email that same day with a tracking number and asking for me to remove the review. lol

Re: Fischman, the few times I went in there they usually had a decent crowd. Very much agreed on the service, though, and it was enough not to rush back in there. The food I had was solid, and the beer lists were good, although I typically went when they had an event.
It's a bummer that they couldn't make it work, but that's kind of a tough spot. The old space really benefited from being so close to a bunch of transit options, and the accessibility of the six corners is a huge issue for other businesses, too. I'm so glad that Community has managed to do well over there cuz I can't imagine it's easy.
