I got my first gift because I accepted a package from FedEx that was delivered to our door on a day when Mrs. Doso also happened to be working from home. I was peering at the shipping label to figure out where it came from and she assumed I saw the big Sodastream logo on the box (I didn't). So she quipped something about how I could open it now that I knew what it was and then I noticed the logo. I was questioning whether I'd keep it at first, but I learned that the carbonation is much more effective if you use a bottle of water that has been thoroughly chilled in the fridge as opposed to cold water right from the tap. Now I just have to find a flavoring option I like. Really do not care for the syrups that came with the package. Very pleased to dispense with lugging 2 liter bottles of Schweppes back from the grocery store. Let me know if this is a viable option for someone with a La Croix addiction When I did the cost comparison based on my own sparkling water drinking habits, I concluded that over the course of 12-18 months, it would be slightly less expensive to go the SodaStream route and that it would pay for itself in that time frame. Unfortunately, I no longer have the data otherwise I'd share it. But YMMV based on how much La Croix costs in your area vs how much 2 liter bottles of Schweppes seltzer costs here. Some other costs to keep in mind: - The CO2 tank needs to be replaced every so often. How often will depend not only on how much sparkling water you drink, but also how many bubbles you like. If you're just doing one or two "pumps" per liter, the tank will last longer than if you're doing four to five (I prefer more bubbles). When a cylinder is empty, that necessitates a trip to a retailer (Target, WalMart, Sur la Table, some grocery stores) to make an exchange. That would have been a dealbreaker for me, but they have a service in NYC where a courier drops by your home to exchange the cylinder. Part of the initial investment for me was having a backup cylinder so I wouldn't be stuck when one went empty. SAFETY NOTE: Apparently some people like to purchase adapters which allow them to use paintball CO2 cylinders with their machines. This is certainly less expensive, but the CO2 refills at paintball shops are not food-grade and could potentially contain trace amounts of nasty stuff you don't want to ingest. - There are different models designed for use with plastic bottles vs. glass bottles (both are proprietary). The glass bottles will last a long while and are dishwasher safe. The plastic bottles cannot go in the dishwasher, cannot be exposed to water temps over 120 degrees or less than 32 degrees, cannot be scratched and must be replaced every 12 months or so (there's an expiration date on the bottle). So that's another cost to consider. - I really like flavored Schweppes and I'm just so-so when it comes to unflavored seltzer. I used the recommended 1/2 tsp of syrup for the first couple of bottles and found it to taste artificial and syrupy. 1/4 tsp works better, but I've come to enjoy unflavored Sodastream much more than a typical unflavored seltzer. So I might not buy as much flavoring as I originally anticipated. I'm inclined to look for other sugarfree non-syrup options (assuming they exist) when I run out of what was included in the original pack. - I highly recommend getting one of the "hydration packs" which include a spare canister and multiple bottles. They're running a post-holiday sale on the Sodastream website right now.

My SO drinks a mother.fucking.ton of la croix, it seems, and would probably love something like this since she's also very conservation-friendly and would probably do away with individual cans of la croix in a heartbeat. I just wonder whether or not the taste of what she'd get would be worth investing in. You have me very curious - also curious why scoots says its definitely not a good alternative

I'll also add that my main motivator for looking into the Sodastream was to do away with the chore of schlepping three to four 2-liter bottles every other day from the grocery store.

Carbonation doesn't last as long and there's a taste difference if you're already used to Bubly or La Croix. Only time I use the Soda Stream is when we're out of other options, which is a nice resource to have.

It's like the one time we tried to switch to store brand carbonated water and it went flat in about 5 minutes after opening the bottle/can. I'm spoiled, I guess.

I haven't had a one liter bottle last long enough to know how quickly it goes flat.

I found a menu we had saved for an incredible restaurant in Berlin and had it framed to surprise my wife. That's the one dining experience she always talks about.

i think i am also booking a theater for a private screening of Forgetting Sarah Marshall (her fav movie) on 12/26 and im really excited about it
edit: pimping this out as a fantastic gift idea if you have a struggling independent theater or really anywhere that offers it. $100 for a full-theater rental and essentially a movie of your choice is a no-brainer gift.

I had suggested that to a friend who turns 40 later this month and is obsessed with all things Keanu, but groups of larger than 10 are being discouraged again so I'm not sure how that will work out.

Reposting here I guess - if anyone has any ideas for a work gift for ~40 ppl, under $25 or so per person, lmk. Would prefer to throw that money at someone local but also have to consider ease of shipping/delivery.

A coworker ordered a bunch of oysters from Island Creek this summer and since then I've been thinking it would be a nice gift. Got my eye on this package for a lil seafood feast.

There was a blurb in the last print edition of Bon Appetit that had a deal for 60 oysters @ $105; we're going to order it with our downstairs neighbors and do a drunk oyster party before xmas. I can't remember the company (will look tonight, i saved the page) but it was essentially a restaurant supplier that lost all their business and pivoted to direct-to-consumer sales. Stuff looked great.

Oh that's nice! My only hesitation with the linked company is that they're all New England oysters and I always forget if I like east or west coast oysters better.

I love Edgewater Candles for something local at that price point, but there's a lot of room for error in re: sending someone a scent they hate... It's an idea, though. They're $24 but they say they cut deals for big orders.

Nice bag of locally roasted coffee or an Edgewater candle are my go tos for $20 range local gifts.

I do like Edgewater Candles and they seem like nice guys, but I have slight PTSD from my first year at this job when I got candles for everyone and overheard ppl making fun of them thinking it was a gift from the company.
So hard to find something that everyone will like. I was thinking some kind of popcorn kit? Idk. Last year it was a slate cheese board thing with little cheese knives and such that seemed to go over well, but I can't seem to find something similar.

First, it was Pub Passes for the wife and I.
Second, it was Royals baseball ticket packages.
Third, it was HBOMax.
2021 better be a great year.
