If true, this feels like a direct reaction to everyone who called out the White Sox for being cheap.
Edit: totp. IRT the reported Eloy extension.

That same guy said the Manny deal was done like 3 weeks before the Manny deal was done... With the Padres

MLB also announced some rule changes. Roster sizes are expanding to 26, but shrinking in September from the ridiculous 40 to 28. Also July 31 will now be a hard trade deadline, no more August waiver moves.

are the sox still sending eloy back to the minors to get the extra year of service time while paying him $100 mil? or do they not have to do that now? i'm assuming a good amount of the money is backloaded to his first FA years.

He's already been optioned back to AAA - the potential structure I've seen has him making a bulk of the money at the tail end of the deal or the deal having option years to bring it up to $100 million. I think he'd end up making $500k this year.

kind of amazing the give someone that extension while telling them we don't think you're ready for the majors still.

This was pretty widely known, no? They've made offers in excess of $100 million, fwiw. I guess Tanaka was the previous big offer before Machado.

Gio Gonzalez to the Yankees...on a minor league deal. He gets a $3M base if he makes the roster, which seems likely although he will probably need to work in the minors for a couple weeks. Still, sad that a 2 WAR pitcher couldn't get a MLB deal.

Also I would have strongly preferred Gio to Ervin Santana, and it's crazy to me that Santana got the better deal of the two.

I don’t think it prevents him from being up in the majors in 2020. Margalus on Sox Machine made a good point that he’s done well at every level, so MLB is going to be in his near future.
And I’m kind of glad we didn’t sign Gio just so I don’t have to see a guy traded 3 times by the same franchise.

Potential starting 5 of Rodon, Lopez, Kopech, Cease and Dunning at some point in 2020 is fun.

I'm still holding out hope that the Sox will sign Keuchel but yeah I'm optimistic about the pitching regardless. Lots of good young relievers too.

Still, sad that a 2 WAR pitcher couldn't get a MLB deal. Dude put up 170 IP with a 2.2 bWAR and a FIP just above 4 last year, is a veteran presence, and was absurdly good as recently as 2 years ago? Absurd that he couldn't land a major league deal somewhere. MLBTR, for what it's worth, pegged him at 2/24 at the start of the offseason.

Get hype for the end of the CLE window and the beginning of the CWS window to be wiped out by a (deserved) strike

It would make perfect sense. MLB only strikes when the White Sox are World Series contenders.

With the opt out it almost feels like he's betting on himself to have a couple of good weeks. Pitchers always get hurt in April so it could pay off.
Counterpoint - one of the most likely pitchers to get hurt in April is Gio Gonzalez
