He negotiated that deal himself. Seems small compared to other deals relievers have gotten this off-season but maybe he took less to play where he wanted.

If the Sox whiff on Machado/Harper, do they just flat out suck for one more year or do they go for the next tier of free agents (Keuchel/Pollock/etc)?

I'd love them to sign Pollock to (I'd assume) a discounted 4 year deal with opt outs. They still need outfield help, and Brantley was my initial fallback if they struck out on Harper. If the training staff can work a miracle and keep Pollock healthy that'd be a great signing.

Hahn insinuated if they miss on Harper/Machado they will not be pivoting towards B & C FAs. He doesn't believe (and I agree) that they will realistically contend in 2019.

They won't contend in 2019 with our without Harper/Machado, but they still need to field a major league roster. Take deals where they can get it. Skipping out on any improvements that could benefit the team during the competitive window would be stupid and shortsighted.

Bob Nightengale did a full article on the White Sox pursuit of the two mega FAs. If anyone is interested you can read it here.

White Sox sign Kelvin Herrera. 2/18 with a vesting 3rd year option.

It's a bit of an overpay given the injuries he's coming off of, but I don't hate it. The White Sox can also afford to overpay him for two years if necessary.

White Sox are in "serious discussions" with John Jay. Apparently he, Alonso, and Manny all train together in Miami in the off-season. They even wrote an article about it together for The Players Tribune. Take that for what you will.

So the pitch to Machado is "we're going to offer you $100 million less than New York and Philly, BUT you can do burpies with Jon Jay for a year"?

I personally would sign a contract for most workplaces if I got to work with Jon Jay.

I’m still not convinced there is any other place on the Internet that covers the Sox with this much depth

Obviously I hope that these moves work to convince Machado to sign, but this is the type of stuff Hahn needed to do to make up the gulf between a 100 loss team and two teams that are far more likely to make the playoffs in 2019. If it doesn't work out, at least there's not a huge commitment to either player.

Grandal to the Brewers, 1 year 18.25M.
Supposedly turned down 4/60 from the Mets earlier in the off-season.

I was kind of hoping he’d go to the Rockies after the White Sox weren’t a possibility.
