I need to lose 20 pounds. Other than seeing a doctor to make sure I don't kill myself doing that, what else should I be doing to prepare? My only advice is if you are focusing on weight loss, it's about 90% your diet, 5% your exercise, and 5% genetics. When I focus on what I'm eating, I can definitely lose weight, but when I don't it stays/I gain, no matter how much I'm doing in the gym.

I get the feeling that I'll need to cut alcohol and soda out (sad trombone), but I definitely want to slim down from where I'm at right now. I've put on something like 20 pounds in the last ~9 months

If you end up deciding to do one, you should sign up with CARA for your first marathon. It's easier training with a group of people if you're not used to that much mileage. That's exactly what my wife did. Great bunch of people.

Pop is probably the worse one anyway.

cutting out soda and sugar is the biggest help.
also switching to chicken/fish more often than beef/pork over a period of time helps metabolize meals faster. much easier than trying to diet yourself out of big meals and starving yourself.

in my experience, beer is way worse than diet soda for trying to lose weight.
time to switch to wine, my friend.

I've also put on a decent amount of weight and it's likely from drinking, too. I eat pretty well but also drink pretty well.

What? No.
Beer is not healthy. Pop is unhealthy. Switching to diet from regular is like shooting yourself in one foot instead of both.

FWIW it's worth consensus with my shrink is that pop would be the biggest thing to get rid of. I imagine I'll need to cut back on beer if not outright eliminate it for a time, but I've known I should stop drinking as much as I do for a long time

You dont totally have to cut diet soda. I drink one Coke Zero a day and it hasn't caused me to gain any weight.

i realized a few weeks ago that i wouldn't reach my goal of 3,000 miles biked this year. i'll be about 150 miles short. i'm pretty disappointed because it seemed so doable. in hindsight, i realized that i should've been going for a short ride on work from home days. next year i'll remedy that. i also plan to ride more when traveling. What do you use to track mileage?

Most beer actually has less sugar and calories than soda.

I definitely need to go to the gym more in 2018. I've been losing weight from diet and basically walking- taking CTA everywhere, but I know I'm not going to want to walk as much in the cold months.

I'd probably waste away if it wasn't for beer, so let's not bad mouth it.

I drink real soda though thank you very little How much, if you don't mind me asking? Oh god in college I was drinking 3-5 regular cokes a day cause I would work until 4am and not get up until noon. I don't do that anymore. I would say I have a big one (32 oz) like every 2-3 days. I'm not sure if that's better or worse than before

What do you use to track mileage? strava. i feel more confident about mileage than i did before when the same route would produce different distances on different days. now it's consistent. elevation gains still appear wildly varying, though. but i am not as concerned with elevation in chicago as i am with just mileage. i also like comparing myself to others with flybys.

I need to lose 20 pounds. Other than seeing a doctor to make sure I don't kill myself doing that, what else should I be doing to prepare? Cut soda completely. Cut down on beer, maybe go more for like wine and mix drinks that use club soda. And count calories and set a calorie goal for every day. That's been the biggest thing for me. It really just got me in a habit of looking at the calories of everything. You dont have to get it down to the exact but just getting in the habit of keeping a general count for your day will help you make healthier choices. It's good motivations to cut out that late night snack, or go for the healthier side dish

I ran more than 6 miles yesterday for the first time since we brought our daughter home - hoping I can make that more of a consistent thing going forward. Running on a holiday is so great. No one was on the trails.
Also I finalized my marathon training plan for next year. Officially starting that in June.
