My attempt to start running is off to a rather pathetic start. I make it out about twice a week. Once I managed three times(yay me). So after a month, I am up to 2 miles in 25 minutes. Blah. My biggest problem - besides self-motivation - is that I hate running after work in the dark and the fuck I am getting up at 5 am to run. A work in progress, I guess. maybe it's because yr running to a mount eerie album!!! throw some jamiroquai on

Holt shit idk what just happened but I had the worst run of my life. Two miles in just under 21 mins. I haven't ran in a while but if that's the case usually I'm around 18, not fucking 21.

I'm not seeing those prices anywhere NOW. I do, however, expect to see prices come down during the holiday season. I'm in no rush, so I'll hold out through Christmas until I see a price I like. Something called Rogue Fitness has it for $945 all in right now. A drop of $50-$150 as we approach January 1 isn't out of the question. Hey, Rogue has their Black Friday sale up now and the main thing is if you buy five things they all ship for $5 total. So if you need any other equipment this will bring it down to $901 shipped for the rower. I need a couple kettle bells and some gloves anyway so this will work perfectly for me.

I'm by no means an expert, but through my training for the Chicago Marathon I definitely had bad days out of nowhere where my pace was way slower than it should have been. Weather, diet, mood, sleep, exhaustion etc. etc. etc. all contribute to it, so don't get discouraged or anything, just head back out in a day or so and go for another run. A bad run is always better than no run.

anybody have any good recs for an exercise bike? Now that I've quit smoking (3 weeks now), I need to get back in shape. I've got P90X DVDs that I've never used before, but I want a bike for cardio. I used to run, but that's really hard on my feet.

I'm an idiot and pushed myself to do 3 miles instead of 2 last week on a run and now I think I have shin splints. It's only my left shin and typically only when I put pressure on it for the first time in a while (after sitting for a while or getting out of bed) or going up (and mainly) down stairs.
Apparently it can take 3 to 6 months to heal? Do I need to go see a Dr? Am I even an adult since I'm turning to a music based Internet messageboard for answers?

I used to get shin splints when I first started running, and I found that icing the shin after running was helpful, but the only real cure I found was to take it easy for a few weeks and then slowly get back into running (as well as other lower-impact cardio in between). Ultimately listen to your legs and take it slow, as far as I know there is no way to 'push through' shin splints, you'll only make things worse. You don't need to stop working out though, doing something low impact like cycling or swimming will keep your fitness up so you don't go backwards while you take a bit of time off.
This is of course just my own experience, I'm not a doctor or anything...

I had shin splints once. They say that it helps to write the alphabet with your foot in the air it should help a lot, especially if you're just starting to feel the effects of it.

Yeah you just need to rest. No need to visit a doctor - they'd just refer you to PT that's not necessarily going to help.
If 3 miles is getting you shin splints, you're probably in the wrong shoes.

New shoes and I would say knock the inflammation down first (ice + ibuprofen regimen for a few days) and then gentle stretching.

Just signed up for my first 10k run in a while, the Chi Town Half Marathon/10k in Lincoln Park on Apr. 7th. Did that one a few years ago and enjoyed it.
Actually going to attempt my first half marathon next year too. Need to do a ton of training, aiming for one in October or November.

I did some research into this because I was getting them bad. It shouldn't take that long to heal unless you have a stress fracture, which you don't necessarily. I thought I might have had one but a few days of rest and I was good Calf stretches before and after help a ton, more than anything else I've found Do these- www.bodybuilding.com/content/4-stretches-to-combat-shin-splints.html

I signed up for that Polar Dash or whatever it is on January 6. It will probably be 65 out.

I signed up for the Colfax Half in May. Not sure if I'll do any races before that. Excited to train for it, though. Running with a newborn at home has been weird.

Ah, okay. I don't think I'm ever going to do a full marathon, I've seen how much more training goes into it, and it just does not seem like a good time.

If you end up deciding to do one, you should sign up with CARA for your first marathon. It's easier training with a group of people if you're not used to that much mileage.

We'll see how I feel after the half next year... I know I can do a 15k, I'll do the Hot Chocolate one again next year too as a warm up to the half most likely.

I need to lose 20 pounds. Other than seeing a doctor to make sure I don't kill myself doing that, what else should I be doing to prepare?

i realized a few weeks ago that i wouldn't reach my goal of 3,000 miles biked this year. i'll be about 150 miles short. i'm pretty disappointed because it seemed so doable. in hindsight, i realized that i should've been going for a short ride on work from home days. next year i'll remedy that. i also plan to ride more when traveling.
