I had to defer my 2017 entry to next year - excited to make a return trip to that race for the first time since 2010.

let my gym membership expire on friday. place has really lost its charm on me (being super tiny and open late finally backfired as everyone else found out about it and started going late and taking their sweet time on the few machines available so my workouts would take twice as long...and apparently asking people to share between sets is now considered offensive?)
anyway, got a new decent one in mind that's over in bucktown that's bigger and not open as late but hopefully is less packed. or at least has more sufferable clientele. similar price too.

Join the Planet Fitness on California. It is always crowded and it smells like Popeye's.

Question- I'm thinking about starting a weight lifting routine (so far I've only done cardio with my gym membership). Currently only interested in losing fat, I want to worry about strength and muscle or whatever later after I get to where I want weight wise. Would lower weight but more reps be better for that? Or does it not really work like that?

lower weight and higher reps is definitely the way to go. main idea will be to treat it like cardio and do a lot of reps of different exercises in relative quick succession to keep your muscles moving and fat burning.
you might wanna look into full body workouts (instead of working one body part a day, you do a little bit of everything every day and just change up the order or pacing.)
separately, first night at the new gym. p cool spot. definitely old school weight room but tons more gear to work with and way less people. and those who are there are more experienced lifters. also it has a sauna so that's nice.

It's so much harder to watch Mad Men when using weights.

So with cold weather coming I've decided I need to get something for cardio at home. Ideally I would get a treadmill but I'm pretty sure that would make my downstairs neighbors murder me in my sleep, so I've decided to get a rowing machine. A bit of shopping around has lead me to believe that I should go with a Concept 2, but they're a lot more expensive than most other brands I'm looking at...
Anyone have any experience with that Concept 2? Are they really worth the extra money? Every review seems to say don't think about it, just get that one because it's far and away the best. And it seems like used ones sell for pretty much what they go for new, so I could get rid of it if it doesn't work out without taking too much of a hit...

Why not get a bike? Seems like something you'd get more use out of than a rowing machine. Cheaper, too.

I'm in the market for one this holiday season as well. Definitely going with the Concept 2. Just waiting for the delivered to my home price to drop to around $800 (ideally). Really don't want to pay more than $900 for it.

Just signed up for the 2018 Chicago Marathon. Glad I deferred my 2017 entry. Kind of BS that I have to pay two entry fees, but excited to run Chicago again.

I'm not seeing those prices anywhere NOW. I do, however, expect to see prices come down during the holiday season. I'm in no rush, so I'll hold out through Christmas until I see a price I like.
Something called Rogue Fitness has it for $945 all in right now. A drop of $50-$150 as we approach January 1 isn't out of the question.

Rogue is legit. Yeah, that's the price on Amazon before tax, but Rogue doesn't have to charge tax. I'll have to keep my eye on that, maybe they'll have free shipping for Black Friday or something.

After a bunch of research, as of yesterday I'm attempting to do a Keto diet and I feel awful today (which is normal from what I hear but still) and I'm really considering just sticking with the counting calories/increasing exercise a ton thing I was doing before instead of trying this.
the plan was to do it for just about 2-3 months then switch back to a more normal diet. Though I suppose if I make it through this week itll be smoother sailing.
is this a good idea? idk

IRT last post in this thread that lasted like two days before I said fuck that
but anyways from running every day + counting calories I just hit halfway to my weight loss goal (at least the initial one I set quite a while back that looked super far away). I've lost 25 pounds since June and I'd say most of the work has come in the last two months. It's pretty steadily dropping right now. Still have not added in weight lifting. I much prefer running outside to the treadmill and I gotta start somehow getting myself to run in the mornings if I want to fit in the gym too regularly into the schedule (I'm running about 5 days a week right now)
also running is getting easier and easier and my goal of being able to do a 5k in January with a not embarrassing time is looking more and more realistic.

Rest days are important - you're risking an injury if you go from no running to running every day. I don't even run every day when I'm marathon training.

I was exaggerating with the first part of that post, I'm doing 5 days a week with 2 rest days, then 1-2 of those run days are lighter days where I mostly walk. Is that reasonable amount of time? I'm new to all this

yeah ive had quite a few long distance running friends that tell me they're gonna "get back into it," they run every day for a few weeks straight and destroy their legs then have to go back into a several weeks/months lull of avoid running to heal. seems like a bad idea.
speaking of bad ideas, i switched to 5x5's instead of 3x10's for lifting a few weeks ago just cause everyone's doing it, and i feel completely affirmed now in saying it is absolutely the dumbest fucking routine.

Gotcha. Yeah you're good. I know a ton of people who run every day because they think it's a great idea and they're crippled with shin splints about a month later.

I kind of just bought a pair that felt comfortable though, after reading more into it I'm thinking about buying a pair soon that's more tailored to my foot and how I run after realizing that's a thing

Most running shops will put you on a treadmill and slow down your stride so you can see how your foot is striking the ground. Sounds gimmicky, but it's helped me identify issues in the past.

My attempt to start running is off to a rather pathetic start. I make it out about twice a week. Once I managed three times(yay me). So after a month, I am up to 2 miles in 25 minutes. Blah. My biggest problem - besides self-motivation - is that I hate running after work in the dark and the fuck I am getting up at 5 am to run. A work in progress, I guess.

Daylight savings time has hurt a lot for me. I really like doing this whole trail by me, but I'm not at the point I can run the whole thing so I have to walk good chunks of it, and I don't have the time now to do that because it gets dark too fast and I hate running in the dark too.
I guess I'm still running around the same amount but I basically would be getting a run and a long walk in every day and that was nice
