Get a Subaru.
Unrelated: Something I hadn't even considered until recently is how the fuel grades are lower in Colorado and other high altitude states due to pollution and other issues. My Crosstrek is supposed to take 87 octane but most gas stations here carry 85 as their base, which i've mostly used. Started using 87 about 6 months ago and the performance improvement has been noticeable. Kind of cool that my Subaru has some more pep.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic that I bought in...2004. I use it 2-3 times per week, so I can't justify buying a new car. I have to get gas about once a quarter. Bump. Well, with baby makes three my trusty Civic's days are numbered. I think we're going to get a small SUV, and I'm leaning towards a CRV since I've been very happy with my Civic and it's obviously lasted me a very long time. If anyone has thoughts/opinions I'm interested.

If anyone has thoughts/opinions I'm interested. Supposedly it depends on the year of the CRV in terms of reliability but anything 2016 and earlier you should be in great shape according to the consumer reports. I drive a Toyota RAV4 and love it, though cabin noise is supposedly a touch louder than the CRV so that could be a deciding factor with a baby in tow. Both retain their value for an extremely long time though.

If you want any copy/pasted material from CR let me know, it's literally my favorite thing in the world to peruse

Ha if there's info specific to CRVs I'd be interested. Have you heard models post 2016 are less reliable?

It seemed to indicate that the models since then have scored in the average to slightly less than average timeline though there’s no major recalls or anything. 2016 and earlier has good to great scores for longevity but keep in mind anything post 2016 is going to be skewed by less data

I saw a new CRV on the road recently and it looks pretty sharp. They really updated the style.

I think this might be the year I buy a car.

We bought the CR-V tonight. The car buying process has not changed much in 16 years and I hope I don't have to do it for another 16.

I drove around a Chevy Equinox the past couple weeks and I liked it very much.

Update: how do you lease a car? I feel like you should be able to Google "lease Chevy equinox near me" and a bunch of options pop up and you can compare. Do I have to actually go into a dealership and negotiate for a lease?

If you want a lower price yes, you can always negotiate on the price/features.

Ugh I guess I could Google "how to lease a car" too

Not saying this will be your situation, but if you basically walk in there with the attitude of "I will walk out of the dealership if you offer the vehicle at this price to me" (be reasonable obviously), you'll knock some payment off. I've leased the past 6 years and both times I got $30-60 a month off. I lease a Hyundai though. I've never been to Chevy.
I absolutely hate negotiating, but it's the only way to do it.

I like negotiating but just don't want to have to go to a bunch of dealerships.

Why would you go to multiple dealerships? Find a well-reviewed one online and go to that one - once you choose the car you want, it's not really necessary to go dealership to dealership. You have the hard part out of the way, so that's good.

My only advice (although I think it probably applies more to buying a car) is to get pre-approved for a car loan from a bank before you go in. One way they'll try to get money is to make you use their bank of choice, and that might not be great for you. If you have the pre-approval, you have something that they'll have to beat if they want to get you to use their bank instead of the one you picked.

This applies to leasing but with quotes from other dealers, which may be why alady is talking about not wanting to go to multiple dealerships

You have the hard part out of the way, so that's good. It sounds like different ones have different deals? But you can't see what the deals are until you go there? I did get pre-approved in case I decide to buy so there's that.

The difference between offers isn't significant enough to drive all around town, but it's your call. I researched Subaru dealerships in the CO area and was able to get a good idea of how willing they would be to throw in extra features or knock off some money based on reviews.

That's good to know. I guess I'm just wondering like how to find out what the monthly payment would even be? Do I have to go in just to find that out?
I haven't ruled out buying but it seems like a terrible investment tbh

^^^ that site has probably been the most helpful of anything I've seen. Idk why I thought there would be more info on dealers' sites? Anyway, I think I've got this almost figured out. Might buy after all lol

After living here for three months finally put effort into selling my car. Got one for more than I thought and more than I owe so I'm pretty happy. Most importantly I don't have to renew my registration or tags beforehand.

The dealership emailed me this morning and basically said because of work my car needed they were going to pay me 1,000 less than what we agreed on, even though they've had the car for almost a month now. I told them if they can't pay the agreed upon price that I'll be taking it elsewhere for the same price. They know I got the same offer from Carmax because they matched it. 20 minutes later I get an email saying they "sorted it all out" on their end and can keep the original price. You're god damn right.

Leased a 2022 Hyundai Tucson yesterday. It was my first ever car shopping experience and man was it stressful. I am pretty much the worst negotiator but I managed to keep my mouth shut and let my girlfriend talk and we got a pretty nice discount from what they started us at so that was great and unexpected. I had read a lot that recent supply hasn’t been able to keep up with demand because of covid so I was expecting us to pay sticker price.
I really really love the car, too.

We've had a Hyundai for 10+ years and love it. Other than 1 over-the-top hard to diagnose electrical issue that took multiple trips to multiple garages its been really solid.
