I'm putting my foot down, if your soundtrack lists more than one single artist on Spotify, barring obvious allowances for a feature, it doesn't count. The inclusion was to allow things like The Virgin Suicides score, entirely by Air. The Phantom Menace is fine, its all John Williams music.
No, you cannot choose a video game soundtrack. No, you cannot choose a compilation.
If you cannot come up with 20 pieces of music from the 1990s better than the space jam soundtrack or banjo kazooie, this is not the list for you.

Another compilation I would argue should be included is the No Alternative comp. Almost all of the material was original (aside from a couple of covers), and kind of captured that unique time when "alternative" music blew up and took over the mainstream. I will allow No Alternative because those songs were not released on those artists' individual albums, or readily made available elsewhere. The music "belongs" to that compilation. i don't get this. there are so many compilations from the 90s where songs were never released anywhere else until a rarities compilation later in the band's career or something. we either allow comps or we don't.

I was already queuing up the Judgment Night soundtrack as one of my contributions for the listening recs so if that is void then I'm not sure I can participate in the project.

There was probably a 90's re-release of Led Zeppelin right?

My current list starts with Fiona Apple, Sleater-Kinney, and Nick Cave... which I’m almost entirely certain is how my ‘00s list started... Great.

So we can joke about John Travolta's feet but not soundtracks? Lame.

If you were trying to build a good mixtape you'd usually need to dig deep into the second side of obscure soundtracks to get something to bring the house down.

back on track Fiona Apple - When the Pawn... (1999)I was in middle school when Tidal came out, and it was all of the rage. There was this group of girls who were all about Fiona and naturally they were labeled in my school as being goth lesbians (yay the Bible Belt). I wasn't popular enough to join in, but it did make me curious to listen to her music. I liked it, but I'll admit at the time I was more into Puff Daddy (go ahead mock me, we didn't have internet, just MTV). Over the years I'd revisit it when I had the time, but Fiona faded from my view. When this album dropped, it seemed like an after thought and I didn't pay much attention to her until much later when The Idler Wheel dropped. Even then, I preferred The Idler Wheel, but that changed this year after multiple conversations with zircona over what the best Fiona record was. I'd never fully give When the Pawn a proper listen, but over the last few months I'd say I listen to it once a week. It's my favorite of hers, it feels so natural and rawer than the rest of her near perfect catalog. This will for sure rank high on my final list, and I encourage everyone to check it out. It's leaps and bounds more mature than Tidal, and while it was less of a commercial and critical success at the time, it's aged better than most would think. I remember upon release folks criticized the title for being too long and silly, therefore dismissing it. It'a shame because it's truly one of the best albums of the 90s. Highlights: Get Gone, Fast As You Can, Limp, A Mistake

IRT Timbo: There's no telling how many Bad Boy releases will be on my list. No shame in loving '90s Diddy.

My mom refused to buy me non-Wal-Mart albums because they were properly edited. So I ended up owning Life After Death and No Way Out. I didn't realize this at the time, but for some time could not understand the Busta credit on Victory b/c his verses were completely edited out.

i will say tho that purchasing my first album ever was pretty awesome, with my own money, even if I don't care for it anymore: The Offspring - Smash. Mom didn't know it wasn't from Wal-Mart, but sister totally ratted me out and so it was confiscated after like 3 weeks.

Are we fine with eps being on our lists? Sugar's Beaster is the first one that came up for me so far.

Listening to "When the Pawn..." now; I've heard it before but never with a serious ear and a commitment to really listen to it, as opposed to just having it on.
Loving it, immediately added Limp to my current playlist. This is a great record - thanks for the writeup @tima
