Guess what came out 10 years ago this Saturday? That's right. CONTRA. I remember that day well.
Being a huge fan of the first Vampy Weeks album, I expected a huge line at the record store, so I called ahead and asked the owner to reserve me a copy. Little did I know, people didnt care. Despite landing at #1 on the billboards, I was the only person there that day buying a physical copy. I'd already downloaded the leak, I just wanted to support the band buying more Hawaiian shirts and slamming those salmon shorts.
Giving up the Gun. Cousins. Horchata. It was so awesome. Flash forward to now, and I cant even get through a full listen. By the end of the tour around this album I was so sick of the band. I lived in a college town so they were all over VW so I heard White Sky and Run, and even California English at work and being played at the hipper bars. And I just started to care less and less about them. Today, it's still my least favorite of their catalog. I like about half of it.
The fandom would get much worse but that didn't bother me till this year with the kinda meh Fiddler or the Boof. Regardless, there's still some nostalgia to the album. I don't hate any of their albums, but the first one is still my favorite, and they really do have a strong "playlist" to me across all albums.

I don't hate any of their albums, but the first one is still my favorite, and they really do have a strong "playlist" to me across all albums. I relate to this so much. I was practically obsessed with it when it dropped, it was one of three vinyl I owned at the time. 2010 was the first time I did an EOTY list and I don't even think it ended up in my top 10. I remember I had a White Sky shirt that came with it. I have very fond memories of the summer of 2010 (for some reason I didn't get around to listening to it until like April), first summer I had my license, of driving around with friends with no destination in particular, just driving because we could and it was something to do, listening to this album constantly. They didn't come to Detroit on that tour but they were going to play the Aragon during I think Memorial Day weekend? I convinced two friends to go and bought my ticket. I remember it was $60 and thought that was so much, which to be fair for a $16 year old that made like $7.25/hour it was. I think Dum Dum Girls and Beach House were opening. I remember not even telling my mom or asking for permission because I know she wouldn't allow it. The plan was to just drive back to Detroit after the show which would be like 6 hours. It never ended up happening, it was just a pipe dream. I had to ask my older friend who was in college at that point to sell it for me online, which at the time was eBay. Ended up selling it for $20. Anyone here buy a ticket on eBay for Vampire Weekend at the Aragon in 2010 for $20? You're welcome.

I'm sure none of it will place, but Prince's output from 2012-2015 should be given a shot. I have vivid memories of sitting in my car with Rock n' Roll Love Affair blasting in parking lots, waiting for it to be over before I'd get out.
Breakfast Can Wait, Screwdriver, FALLINLOVE2NITE, FUNKNROLL, and plenty of others from the Hit 'N Run phases are pretty amazing Prince music. I didn't totally dig the release philosophy, but it doesn't change the fact that the songs are...well, hits.
This is the first full decade I could say I've really paid any attention to new music, so my favorites do stand out in my head pretty clearly. I'm trying to spend some more time unearthing the things I've let fall by the wayside over the past 10 years.
I listened to Passion Pit's "Gossamer" last night and it may well end up in my top 5.

I don't hate any of their albums, but the first one is still my favorite, and they really do have a strong "playlist" to me across all albums. As fate would have it - Contra was one of my first "indie" albums back in the day. I was in Cleveland with my fam sometime in early 2011 eating at the esteemed Hard Rock Cafe when the music video for "A-Punk" came on the monitors. I was at the end of my hardcore classic rock phase at the time, and this song sounded like a revelation to me. There was new music coming out that had guitars? Pretty much the only modern band I liked at the time was Coldplay at that MGMT song from the opening credits of 21, so this was big news for young Monastery. The name Vampire Weekend sounded familiar tho, so I paged through a copy of Rolling Stone that I'd recently picked up at Barnes&Noble (for what reason I don't remember) and found their write-up in the 2010 AOTY list. Soooo many of what became my favorite albums came out that year ( Have One On Me! This Is Happening! The Suburbs! THE MONITOR!), but lo and behold, there was Vampire Weekend, hot off the success of their new record Contra. I went to Best Buy later that week and got myself a copy. I figured even though it didn't have "A-Punk" it ought to be good. And from there began an obsession that has me listening to some 300+ new albums and going to 40+ shows a year. As for the album itself, I - like Timbo - would put it at the bottom of the VW barrel. That said, I still love it and wouldn't be surprised if it wormed its way into the back-half of the AOTD list. "I Think Ur A Contra" and "Diplomats Son" still go unbelievably hard.

Contra is the worst Vampire Weekend album.
I guess I'll churn some more reviews out of stuff that'll be on my list.

Seeing Vampire Weekend play "Giving Up the Gun" at Coachella 2013 changed a lot about how I felt about them. I thought most of s/t was okay, but that Contra was mostly silly until that performance.
Seeing Vampire Weekend play the Ryman later that year made me realize they were some of the most talented artists I'd had the pleasure of seeing.

Between these statements being true of me as well (though I think I started listening to arcade fire in 2010?) and the fact that we looked exactly the same in 2011 I’m starting to think we might be the same person

There is a small set of albums that I "gave up on" in 2015-2016...basically, we had a rotating cycle of 10 or so albums my coworker-pod could tolerate being played for the whole room, and I had to give most of them a rest after awhile just from fatigue. I must have heard Art Angels 3 times a week for 2 years, it all just started to sound like background music to me. This is without a doubt my first full listen of the record since I left that job in 2017.
