I enjoy my friendsgiving way more than actual thanksgiving at this point. We're not doing that until the 8th cause schedules, but that's the actual event I look forward to

lol shitty family experiences are of our own creating. Alrighty. you just don’t have thanksgiving with those people. Seems like that’s what you’re doing now. Don’t see how that would make thanksgiving bad. Sometimes families are so bad people move literally around to the other side of the world to get away from them.

I will say, I've not been able to pull it off yet, but here is the recipe for the perfect fourth Thursday in November:
Step 1: Stay home. Step 2: Make a green bean casserole to taste. Step 3: Eat as much as you goddamned want. Step 4: Don't watch people get CTE.

I love cooking and I love seeing my family.
I do not love traveling with hordes of people whilst carrying things I have cooked or getting stressed out about finding the time to cook things in a short week at the end of the year when I don't want to use extra PTO.
I like Thanksgiving but it's so stressful I can't say whether it should stay or go.

Seems like a lot of you get Friday off. If I did, it would make this holiday a lot better. But I hate mid-week days off, and this one is never NOT that.
As a holiday though, it's Good.

All of the terrible people are on my side of the family and they are all on the East coast, so the last 4 TGs have been great. Before that it was with my ex's family and that was never fun.
Havent spent this holiday with my side of the family since I was a kid, and I don't miss it.

We’re spending actual thanksgiving day here since I have to work for a few hours the day after but then we’re headed to Peoria right after. I’m actually kind of excited to have the day of to just chill at home but we’re still gonna make a bunch of stuff so that’ll be nice.
Open invitation for anyone who doesn’t want to see their family to come have thanksgiving with E and I

I have a good question: Anyone have family that does the dinner at some goofy time?
About 10 years ago, we went to my in-laws in Florida. My brother-in-law wanted to be in charge of making the dinner, so that was fine. We figured we would go and see my dad quickly around 1, and then be back in plenty of time for dinner. My BIL and his wife's response was "uh, we're having dinner at that time."
The intent was you eat plenty early, then go back and have leftovers the rest of the day. But no way for me. We always eat around 5 or 6 or whatever. That time just cracked me up though.

We normally eat around four.

Yeah, we usually have lunch around 12 or 1 and then leave the food out for the rest of the day for people to graze.

It varies depending on who in my family is hosting Thanksgiving, but It’s usually between 4 and 6. I can’t imagine eating such a big meal at noon or 1.

Don’t see how that would make thanksgiving bad. This is absolutely not how my family works. The terrible mix with the good. Glad that you had a good family dynamic, but my holidays have been more stressful than enjoyable. I had to move 1k miles away for the no family holiday to be an option.

We almost always go to Iowa for Thanksgiving because of the extra built in travel days. The meal itself is more of a lunch, which I am a big fan of. Folks can eat and take off or stay and nap, and the conversations are only ever mildly uncomfortable.
New tradition there has been watching all the dog show reruns, which I am also a big fan of.

it used to be much more stressful and negative with my family when it was a bigger headcount of extended members from the south, who were not exactly open to some of us in the family and how we identify ourselves. granny did a good job of telling them all to fuck off so now thanksgiving is a much smaller event with just immediate family who aren't prejudice af and we all get along just fine that being said, this is probably the most i've looked forward to a thanksgiving ever. i was away from home way more this year than any other year previously and kinda WANT to be around my family and catch up on stuff. which is something i never thought i'd say lol

Pretty much what we do except Wisconsin. Dog shows a huge factor.

I have positive feelings about Thanksgiving time and the (American) holidays in general, but also understand that we as a culture celebrate some wild shit and it's okay to burn it all down.

Ended up just deciding to get all my own sides of the ones I like and will be doing hot chicken from either Parson's or Budlong tomorrow. My grocery store had Publican dinner rolls so excited for that.

I thought they were supposed to send out emails about our exact pick up time, but I haven't gotten one yet. I hope they have food for me when I show up tomorrow.

For their Thanksgiving meal but maybe they're doing regular orders as well? Budlong is so if I do decide Parson's over Budlong I could still get Budlong and be happy.

I just ended up having too much going on with switching jobs so I slowly scaled back my ambitions for tmw to the point where I'm making Coq Au Vin just since I know I can do it and there will be no surprises or mishaps. It's a bird, it's rich enough to be festive, and the braise stinks up the house with the smell of thyme so double festive points. I'm content

After mine comes out of the brine, it will be rubbed with a possibly ludicrous amount of sage/rosemary/thyme compound butter. On top of that, I think I'm going with straight up salt and pepper. I was really considering doing a more Cajun-inspired bird this year with an excellent new rub I picked up, but I think that's going to make my gravy funkier than I'd like.
All extra herbs and stems will float in the bottom of the roaster to flavy the gravy
