Hello all! Welcome to another edition of The Board Dot's Songs of the Year Celebration! We only had ten eligible participants this year (tsk tsk tsk), so all of you at least got your top 3 songs in our list of 50. I'll be counting posting #s 5(2) through 21 as text only here, and will then post the top 20 alongside their best live performance I can find throughout the rest of the afternoon. Also! Check the end of this thread for a Spotify playlist plus some additional editors notes on this year's lists. Enjoy!

How is Hungry Child only at 19 Fwiw these lists reminded me that Hot Chip and Local Natives were both bands who released albums in 2020

I loved that Helado album, but I couldn't pick out one song in particular to put on the list. Same for the Fontaines.
And let's agree that no one should ever compare either of the Gallaghers to the Fontaines in any way ever again (I know that was a comment from the video, I don't care)

The album was holistically this mesmerizing and chill record. I went with Imagining What to Do bc it popped up on my wife's playlist for our son so by default I've listened to it the most.

Thirded on Helado Negro. There were like five contenders on that record but I had a deep obsession with Fantasma Vaga.

10. Bon Iver - Hey, Ma (125)
Including this video for the dude who fucks up his singalong timing around 2:10
9. Big Thief - Cattails (140)
"Drummer looks like Richard Manuel but plays like Levon. Love" - this was a comment from the video, but I want to take a moment to appreciate BT's drummer, James Krivchenia. For my money, he's one of the best drummers in the game rn - he's not flashy but always fits the pockets in the band's songs perfectly and makes them float. Levon is a great comp - as well as Ralph Molina from Crazy Horse, IMO.

8. Weyes Blood - Everyday (143)
1:36 is almost exactly how I dance to this song in the elevator at work
7. Mannequin Pussy - Drunk II (170)
Someone needs to get this band on a live studio session ASAP - can't believe the best live video of one of the best rock tracks of the last five years was filmed at Mr. Roboto Project in Pittsburgh (a venue which rules tho)

6. Better Oblivion Community Center - Dylan Thomas (175)
Which poet has had the best songs written about them? I'd nominate John Berryman, but Thomas is a strong contender too.
5. FKA twigs - Cellophane (192)
Biggest fuckup on my list was omitting this track. Had "Mirrored Heart" in my top 30, but re-listening to this one while tabulating has fucked me up again and again and again. Can Twigs please headline all the festivals next year? Or at least one near me?
