Hello everyone!
We're coming up hot on the heels of our best films of 2019 list. I am not opposed to tallying this list although if someone else was looking forward to it, feel free. Let's do lists by midnight on the 8th, if that works for everyone! Stay tuned for the end of next month when we'll talk about our favorite films of the decade, but I personally know I'll want a couple weeks of revisiting things and revising my list after I get through the 2019 stuff I have to see still.
Before we get into lists, I thought it would be fun to talk about a few things!
1. Our favorite movie moments of 2019. Tell me about the scenes and sequences you thought were really great! Whether it be a technically impressive shot, a particularly good monologue, or just something you straight up vibed with, we want to hear about it! It can be a something in a movie you otherwise disliked that really stood out with, or a highlight of your favorites, please just remember to spoiler tag anything that you feel is necessary.
2. What "new to you" films did you see in 2019 that you were impressed with and
3. What was a film you were initially excited for but ultimately disappointed by?
We have such a wide variety of opinions here on film and I always look forward to hearing what you guys have to say about it!

I'll start us out! 1. I have a lot of these but I'll limit to some of the first I can think of - the needle drop at the end of Transit when the credits hit floored me. I wasn't really expecting it and was already really happy with how the film was ending. - Joni Mitchell singing Coyote in Rolling Thunder Revue was wonderful and very interestingly shot. I think I would have enjoyed the doc significantly more if it had been made up of these moments vs the made up Sharon Stone stories that comprised a large portion of it. - all of Skyler Gisondo's scenes in Booksmart - the ending of The Lighthouse I'm still thinking about that scream - the way Hustlers used "Criminal" 2. Candyman and Basket Case were the horror movies I plan to add to my annual rotation. Watched a lot of Bergman as I work through the Criterion set and enjoyed the majority of it. I also saw Sans Soleil for the first time and was pretty amazed. A good reminder to use my Criterion Channel subscription more often. 3. I was pretty excited for Jojo Rabbit, The Laundromat, and Toy Story 4 but didn't love any of them, and I don't envision revisiting them anytime soon.

I have a pretty good grasp on my top 20, I still need to see The Irishman and Joker.
Nothing really came close to Parasite for me this year.
Favorite movie moment was the city on fire in 1917.
Mostly all the new movies I watched this year were in theaters or new releases.
I was very underwhelmed and unsatisfied with Star Wars

1. Favorite moments: When anybody (eg Adam Driver, the monkey in the Lynch short) sings a song
2. Favorite non-2019 movies I watched for the first time in 2019: Harakiri, Margaret, The Sweet Smell of Success, Weekend, Toni Erdmann
3. I was disappointed by The Lighthouse.
Still want to see: Her Smell, High Life, Atlantics, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, First Cow, The Souvenir, Hustlers, Climax, Ash is Purest White, The Farewell, The Nightingale

Favorite Moments: Most of Booksmart. The appearance of "the ghost" in Parasite. Martha Kelly & Laura Dern's performances in Marriage Story. When we finally decided to shut off Joker. How absolutely rocked I felt as the Midsommar credits rolled.
New Favs to Me in 2019: An American Werewolf in London, Blood Simple, Edge of Tomorrow, Blue Velvet, Funny Games, Rumble in the Bronx
Disappointment: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which I know I need to rewatch at some point.
My biggest priorities to catch up with are: Toy Story 4, The Lighthouse

1. entire ranch sequence in ouatih (tarantino make a horror challenge), pacino eating ice cream, the opening 15 minutes of climax, the twist reveal in serenity 2. carrie, assault on precinct 13, a lot of almodovar, kiss me deadly, rumble fish/bram stoker's dracula/one from the heart (late period coppola is the best coppola) 3. ugh so many; lighthouse, midsommar, the dead don't die, john wick 3 (still liked!), star wars

1.
- pretty much every Tarantino hallmark in Once Upon A Time....
- Captain America wielding Thor's Hammer, and the subsequent 20 or so minutes of Endgame
- Mysterio's massive illusion for Spider-Man was the most accurate villain depiction of the entire MCU. Legit pulled from the pages.
- ending of Uncut Gems
- knife prty in John Wick 3
- the feeling of returning home in El Camino
2.
Nothing new to me in 2019 worth mentioning
3. After sitting on it awhile I think IT chapter 2 was still decent but also disappointing. and I think a lot of that has to do with the faithful adaptation approach. Some of the sequences were dull. Hader was top notch tho.
Joker was disappointing, largely bc so many people built it up to being something i ultimately feel it wasn't. It was predictable, and boring, and all of the awards its winning are baffling to me, but I'm no film buff like I used to be so I'm probably not hip enough to get it.
Still need to see a lot: Knives Out, F v F, Parasite, and the rest of the Best Pic nominees.

- there is still like a legit 5 way tie for my #1 of 2019 (Shadow, Parasite, Knife + Heart, Knives Out, and Joker) and i have no idea how im gonna make cuts until i rewatch everything over the next week or two. i honestly wanna put The Lighthouse in its own category of a "?" ranking permanently.
- i somehow saw 40 movies in 2019 and there's still like 4-5 more obvious ones i need to see before finalizing my list -- Uncut Gems, 1917, Monos, Marriage Story, and Pain & Glory. also 3 From Hell but i have insanely low expectations for that.
1. favorite moments were from Parasite (the kick,) Shadow (the umbrellas,) Endgame ("on your left,") Jojo Rabbit (the shoes,) and The Lighthouse (the lobster!)
2. New Favorites (thanks to Shudder and Criterion) were From Beyond, A Field in England, Ran, and Elements of a Crime. at least at the moment until i think of more.
3. Disappointments: Glass, The Nightingale, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker were not great compared to what i went in expecting. i would say Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood qualifies too but i still liked it quite a bit -- just not as much as the hype had led me to believe that i would.

What "new to you" films did you see in 2019 that you were impressed with and 3. What was a film you were initially excited for but ultimately disappointed by?Movies I watched for the first time: No No: A Dockumentary On the Basis of Sex Raw The Natural The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Paddington Paddington 2 Ant-Man and the Wasp Us Endgame Atomic Blonde Rocketman Synechdoche, New York Apocalypse Now Mother Who's Afraid of Virigina Woolf Ralph Breaks the Internet Predator Captain Marvel The Goonies Basket Case The People Under the Stairs The Omen Happy Death Day Angels in the Outfield Booksmart Grosse Pointe Blank Knives Out Jojo Rabbit Solo A Futile and Stupid Gesture Far From Home Midsommar 1. As far as actual 2019 movie moments, I don't care if it's dumb superhero contrivance, but in Endgame when they finally paid of Cap being able to wield Mjolnir, that alone justified most of the entire MCU's existence to me. And then to have him gracefully exit at the end with a peaceful and happy life, it just felt like the most fitting and satisfying sendoff for the character I've always rooted for the most. Also, seeing Rian Johnson just come in with a consummately directed film after all the nonsense pointed his way recently, where each moment was full of style, the last movie that had me leave the theater grinning like that was Baby Driver. And, just, every scene with Gigi in Booksmart. 2. Synechdoche and Apocalypse Now was quite the back to back feature, and I don't know how I avoided seeing two movies I had every reason to rightfully believe would absolutely knock my socks off for so long. And, honestly, as I said here, Solo was so much more fun and honest to the spirit of Star Wars than just about everything I'd heard led me to believe. The Goonies, conversely, I was convinced wouldn't age well, or play to someone who had never seen it as a kid, and boy was I wrong there. 3. Midsommar by far is the frontrunner here, though The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was not all I wanted to be, if not strictly disappointing.

disappointments:lion king Not trying to be a dick but what could you have possibly expected from this movie that you didn't get? The Disney annual output is pretty much 3 substantially identical superhero movies, superfluous live action remakes of old cartoons, and a Star Wars movie everyone complains about. I know what I'm getting into basically any time I give money to the house of mouse.

Favorite Moments: The huge shift in One Cut of the Dead, remembering how great Joe Pesci can be, Brad Pitt/primate battle in Ad Astra, how batshit Serenity was
New Favs to Me in 2019: The Graduate, Black Christmas, the soundtrack from Phantom Thread, All of Phantom Thread
Disappointment: New Star Wars, Ad Astra not receiving any award show attention,
My biggest priorities to catch up with are: Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollyweird, Joker

It seemed like there were a notable number of music oriented short films this year. Some of them were really great. I thought Thom Yorke's ANIMA was gorgeous and The National's I Am Easy To Find added so much to an album I already enjoyed. On the other end of the spectrum I thought Guava Island was pretty bad, not only because it's a bit of a lame story, but the major worker uprising related themes feel cheapened by the fact that this is an amazon financed production, a company that exploits their labor.
Anyone see anything cool like this? Could be a long form music video, a short film based around the music of another artist, or hell even a regular music video you liked. I don't really watch those unless someone tells me to. What are some of your favorites from 2019? I don't ever really count these on my list but I enjoy watching them.
Also a reminder, lists are due by midnight on the 8th. Lists should be at least 10 movies long and we'll put the cap at 25. If anyone thinks I should change that I am more than open to it. Even if you don't talk about movies on here a ton, you're eligible to make a list. Including your thoughts (yes, yours!) on this will make the project significantly more interesting and provide fun and colorful discussion to enjoy.

I have a pretty big backlog of 2019 movies at this point. 1917, Little Women, Irishman, The Farewell, Lighthouse, Midsommar, Pain and Glory, Hustlers, lots of stuff still. Hoping I can get through a lot of it this month
My top 3 right now is pretty solid- 1. Parasite, 2. Marriage Story, 3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I'll check back in with this post after ive caught up on my list but I have a feeling that the only ones that have a chance of jumping one of these is the Lighthouse and maybe the Irishman.
Favorite Moments- Honestly the big main fight in Avengers Endgame was just a wet dream of a scene I felt like. It was way too much fun and I was like giddy the whole time. The scene mentioned in Xam's spoiler made me literally squeel in excitement The ending of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood I loved so much and really made the movie for me The argument scene in Booksmart is great. Also the argument scene in Marriage Story was incredible. And lots of other amazing scenes too. This one makes up a lot of my favorite moments The footage of the takeoff from Apolo 11 (the documentary) is just so incredible. The whole thing is kind of incredible, the amount of footage they got, but goddamn I got chills watching the takeoff. Songwriter scene from Under the Silver Lake The illusion/hologram fight from Spider Man Far From Home was great. I also enjoyed the beginning with it talking about the aftermath of Endgame. And also, the post credits scene is the best Marvel post credits scene. Movies I discovered in 2019- I had somehow never seen The Godfather before. It rules. Biggest disappointments- I wasn't even really excited for Rise of Skywalker and it still let me down. I'm one of those people that doesn't really like TLJ and TROS somehow managed to make me appreciate TLJ way more. Not that I expected a ton, but I did expect a fun nostalgia trip thing from The Lion King and it sucked. I really wanted Detective Pikachu to be good. I mean I knew it wasn't going to be some amazing film, but I wanted it to kind of establish video game films. It wasn't terrible or anything and actually did a really great job at world building (which is what makes it redeemable), but while I could tell it was made by people who love Pokemon, those people clearly aren't great screenwriters. Despite mentioning it in my best moments list, I was a bit disappointed by Booksmart. I love coming of age films and thought I would love this, but I thought it was just ok, albeit with some great moments. I thought Joker was fine with some good moments, but I got caught up a bit too much in hype after it won the Golden Lion. It definitely didn't deserve that. I don't know why I expected much of Todd Phillips.

some more notes going into finalizing my list this week. focusing on rewatches mostly but caught a few new things.
-both Midsommar and The Lighthouse were such treats on second viewings. loved them both the first time around but going back now and knowing the stories and the endings, you can really just take in the sights and sounds and both are just fucking perfect. also Florence Pugh is the queen of 2019.
-the same^ could be said for Under the Silver Lake on second viewing when you know what everything does/doesn't mean, but to a slightly less effect. great movie but doesn't feel as well put together as the other 2 i mentioned. the Songwriter scene is probably the thing to happen in a movie last year.
-Once Upon a Time in Hollywood really did not change for me on second viewing. the six month jump in the 3rd Act is just so jarring and the pace escalates so quickly that it still irks me a bit. i like everything about every scene but there's something with how they're smashed together that just makes me not love it as much as everyone else. still his best in a while tho.
-besides Shadow and Knife + Heart, i'll add Monos and The Art of Self Defense as some personal favorites that didn't get enough love last year. Monos especially was fucking astounding but all of them are pretty stellar.
-apparently the blu ray of Doctor Sleep is a director's cut with 30 extra minutes that seems to directly confront almost every issue people had with the movie? lol. will definitely seek that out but probably not until after i've already finished my list.
-still plan on rewatching Joker, Parasite, Shadow, Lords of Chaos, Endgame, High Life, and Knife + Heart this week/upcoming weekend. kinda wanted to catch Star Wars IX again on a $5 tuesday but idk. probably not gonna get around to Pain & Glory, 1917 or Little Women unfortunately. also Netflix has one called Atlantics that looks wild.
basically 2019 was crazy fucking stacked for films. i genuinely like the top 35 or 40 out of the 50 that i saw.
