Saw Robyn on this day 2 years ago, right after it was announced that she was headlining Pitchfork 4 months later. That night sure was expensive! Oh fuck this was the night when you saw me in the hundreds deep coat check line at the end of the night and started clowning on me for checking my coat and then avb happened to walk up a minute later and the clowning was just relentless

that was good.
the robyn show at aragon was better than the p4k set so no regrets there.

on this day in 2002, i saw trail of dead and the mooney suzuki at the TLA. weird pairing, right? there was always something just a little off or inauthentic about the mooney suzuki when i saw them. i could never quite figure out what it was. just about everything i knew of trail of dead before this was about them smashing instruments every night. they didn't do that, but i was so into Source Tags & Codes that i still thought they were really good.
on this day in 2005, i saw the hold steady at the old bottom lounge. i didn't know much about them and probably would not have gone if it wasn't so close to where i lived. i'd only been in chicago a few months and was still taking advantage of shows being within like walking distance of home rather than an hour's drive. but this show gave me a much better appreciation for them.
on this day in 2016, i saw american aquarium at schubas. i am pretty sure this was a day-of jukely selection. they were fine for a band i'd never heard of before that day.

THANK YOU I remember only once going to that location, but could not remember what the name of it was. Looking on the map, it was the original Bottom Lounge location. All I remember is I think I saw some emo or punk band there, but no idea who.

I didn't join for Will Butler did I? Or was that just a night of heavy drinking at baby's all right with Will Butler in the background and therefore I don't remember. Also according to the Facebook, seven years ago today was that killer Screaming Females show at Silent Barn

According to my memory yes he was, but my strongest memory of that show would be the specific aroma of a room full of aging NYC punks.
Who knew I'd one day truly miss that smell.

A year ago today was my last show, Wilco at the sylvee with mookie. I did see Sylvan Esso at the drive in in September which was super fun but definitely different

I also remember leaving the Wilco show and assuring mookie I’d be in Chicago soon, but I had also looked at my phone shortly after the show and had seen Pearl Jam cancel all their dates and knew that probably wasn’t going to be true. I didn’t realize how long it would be though

Today marks one year since my last concert which was Lower Dens at Lincoln Hall. There were less than 100 people there and it was a very good show.

on this day in 2007, i saw jon brion at steppenwolf. the first time i saw him was really fun and this one was also good, but sort of like doing the same tricks in a different way. the dude's a savant, obviously. but at some point he's mostly just a one-man cover band. then again, who else is playing "back in black" as if fats waller covered it?
on this day in 2018, i saw hot snakes and meat wave at thalia hall. hot snakes have the most boring setlist construction of any band i like that much. but they always play very well, so i can't complain too much. meat wave was great at this show. afterward, i felt too tired to bike all the way home so i went from pilsen to ogilvie to catch the last metra. before it left, some woman was yelling at her kid and another woman stepped in like "hey, he's just a kid. take it easy." and the first woman hit her and it brought the police and it delayed the train and it was a whole deal.
i have also seen alabama shakes at lincoln hall and tennis at thalia hall on this day.

Venom every time you tell a story I feel like you’ve seen some shit lol eh, i'm just an innocent bystander who likes to be observant. but there was the time at lolla when a dude wouldn't accept that i wasn't the fence he'd met through benny. that was a rollercoaster.

Jon Brion (and the rest of the lineup at the intonation festival lineup) the yr before that were the first shows I went to where I ran into discountsounds other than the show at the hideout where the band he was in played. he brought clearancesounds with him to intonation, too. it was also the first time I saw a really tall dude and his short asian american girlfriend, and I figured it was sixtimes, so I asked him if he was sixtimes, and he was, and when I did that, chicity came over and introduced himself to us.

on this day in 2001, i saw rocket from the crypt and the go-to-hells in pittsburgh. rftc sounded amazing. i hadn't seen them since '97 and thought they were incredibly tight with the new songs. it was a rare all ages show at this venue starting at 7pm. but one of my friends didn't know that and showed up at 10pm when normal saturday night shows got going, so he missed the whole thing. also, i bought a hoodie at the merch table that i still wear regularly.
on this day in 2007, i saw badly drawn boy at metro. the show was pretty good, but apparently no one told damon he had a curfew and he got a little annoyed when someone said "you've got 10 minutes left." he's like "i still have 10 songs on the setlist."

4 years ago was Jens Lekman at the Metro. Emma and I had an awesome time at this one and even waited in line after the show to meet Jens. He signed my copy of Night Falls Over Kortedala and sang a bit of “Kanske Ar Jag Kar i Dig” - a lovely night.
I also successfully told a chatty group to shut the fuck up during the show, so that was fun.

Not only did they shut up - but a few songs later they (including a tall guy in front of us) left for a different part of the crowd. Might have been my most successful “shut the fuck up” ever, in retrospect. Greatest failures at this tactic include yelling at a guy requesting Westfall repeatedly at Okkervil River, and telling off a group of bros talking about golf at a Killers Lolla set.

That Jens show at Metro was fantastic. Still bummed that he had to cancel the show he was going to do with the local high school band last year at Thalia.

Today is a year since the last actual show I went to (not counting the Local H drive in show), Chelsea Cutler at the Riviera. Two days later I would be too afraid of Covid to attend the Every Time I Die show at the Metro, but that would have been a much cooler show to have as my last one in retrospect.
Can’t wait for shows again!!!

Today is one year since my last real show pre-pandemic, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros at the Chicago Theater. I was miracled a ticket last minute by a random dude on Twitter, and during the show the NBA suspended their season, and Trump announced he was closing the borders. I remember thinking this was probably going to be my last show for a while, and I was grateful (no pun intended) to get one more in before lockdown started.
