on this day in 2001, i was working load in/out for a jill sobule show at my school and watched from the back. the only thing i remember about the show is that an annoying group of girls kept yelling it was someone's birthday and finally sobule caved and sang happy birthday to her. two years later i'm out for my girlfriend's birthday and i hear her talking to a friend "remember two years ago when we were drunk and got jill sobule to sing happy birthday to me?"
i have also seen kinky and wilco on this day in the past.

On this day in 2016 I saw Animal Collective at then new venue Concord Music Hall. I sold some redacted to a friend of a friend beforehand who has become one of my best friends over the last 5 years since then. They were touring off of Painting Withand I believe this is the last Animal Collective album I have cared about to date.

I don't remember the Ratking set. I don't have them written down in my document so I assume my pre-show activities kept me from seeing them. I did save the album to my Spoitfy, so look for it to show up randomly in the albums thread like 2 months from now

24 years ago today I saw Live in a small theater. This was after they had just released Secret Samadhi, which was the follow up to their blockbuster Throwing Copper. I felt like I was part of something exclusive - the huge band in a smaller venue type of deal. The set was mostly songs from both of those albums, and they covered The Psychedelic Furs' 'Love My Way'.
2 years and 8 days later I'd see them again at the same venue, touring for The Distance to Here. Cibo Matto opened.
Both shows were good, but I fell out of love with them a long time ago. I would've called them one of favorite bands in high school and college - even had a Throwing Copper t-shirt - but not anymore. The only album of theirs I still keep is Throwing Copper, and that's only because I like the deeper cuts. I can't stand 'Lightning Crashes' and 'I Alone' anymore.

on this day in 2003, i went to see godspeed you black emperor and black dice in philly. i showed up shortly after doors were supposed to open only to find a line outside. a friend was already out there. so we waited. and waited. the line grew and eventually stretched down the block and around a corner. and it was really cold. every few minutes a guy at the front of the line banged on the door to ask how long until doors would open. the door guy would just shrug.
a woman who worked there tried to parallel park right in front and just could not do it. the whole time people in line were roasting her terrible parking skills. she finally got out while the car was midway, walked inside, and then another employee walked out to park it properly. after an hour and a half, doors finally opened. most people put their coats on the floor and laid down. when black dice started and some people near the front stood up, they were booed and shamed into sitting. it's the best i've ever seen godspeed. they apologized for the delay getting started, but then didn't say a word for two hours and sounded amazing.

It was 10 years ago today that I went to the Congress for the Pogues and Titus Andronicus. Got in free because a couple of you won tickets from Do312, so I tweeted and asked if they had any more, and they said "sure" and gave me one.
Loved the Titus set of course. Never been a Pogues fan, but tried to give them a chance. Made it through maybe 3 songs, and decided to head home. Almost everyone from Titus was sitting in the hallway (minus Patrick), which I thought was a little odd. It was like a week or two later when they left the tour and said how miserable they were on it.

the only time I ever saw the pogues was at the riviera on an actual bloomsday. I don't remember much if anything about the show, except that it was a special day for irish author james joyce in his book ulysses.

Same here - it’s been one year since I caught Real Estate play on the street outside Other Music’s former location. Can’t believe I went from seeing ~50 shows a year to complete silence. Even weirder is how used to it I’ve become.

Even weirder is how used to it I’ve become. i don't know if i'd say i've become used to it. but the impact has not been as much as i would've expected. however, i dream about shows regularly and especially not seeing shows. i've dreamt about not being able to find the venue, a band cutting a set short after one song, arriving to the venue after the show was over, etc. last night i dreamt about being in a crowd at hardly strictly bluegrass but only while they were setting up. i woke up before anyone actually played.

Ha! I love that - been having some strangely specific concerts dreams too. Last night I saw Townes Van Zandt open for Phish at some fancy looking theater (maybe the Auditorium?)

16 years ago today I saw Paul Westerberg and his band play here in town. I thought he would play only 1 or 2 Replacements songs - he played several. Kiss Me on the Bus, Valentine, I'll Be You, Little Mascara, IOU, Skyway, etc. That was a great surprise.
For the encore, the rest of the band minus Paul came back onstage. They played 'I Will Dare', and Paul sang it from offstage. They finished with a cover of 'If I Had A Hammer'.

on this day in 2001, i saw weezer and the get-up kids at the roseland ballroom. the crowd was very annoying, but i think it was a pretty good weezer show and i'd take that setlist in a second today.
on this day in 2003, i saw supergrass at the TLA. i drove the hour+ to philly only to find it was sold out. i had even called the box office that afternoon to ask if it was close to selling out and if i could likely buy one at the door. they said i'd probably be fine. apparently not. so i hung around waiting for someone selling an extra, got in a little spat with a scalper, and kept an eye on a guy holding a ticket but not hawking it. i went up to him a few minutes before doors opened. it turned out he was the sound guy and wanted to give away his comp. yes, please. great show.
on this day in 2007, i saw the pogues at the congress. it was not really my thing, but one of my friends had comped me and he loved it.

Supergrass opened for Foo Fighters the first time I saw them in '97. I didn't know any of their songs except for 'Caught By the Fuzz' (thanks, Beavis and Butthead!).

Jealous of everyone in this thread who got to see the Pogues, whether fans or not. Doubt Shane is gonna be well enough again to get the band back together.

Broadway / Chicago, IL / (312) 404-5080 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jul 22, 1995 Sat noon *Supergrass in-store performance they had apparently played cabaret metro in March, as well, without it coming up on my radar.

10 years ago today I saw The Magnetic Fields for the first time when they toured for Realism. I was very much excited to see them. I wish the setlist wasn't so heavy on the new album - it's not that great - the highlights for me were The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side, Xylophone Track, and 100,000 Fireflies. Their stage banter was also laugh-out-loud funny.
5 years ago was Springsteen on The River anniversary tour. Had a cheap seat behind the stage. As always, they were awesome, but the HOLY SHIT YES moment for me came when they played 'My Love Will Not Let You Down', which I had made a sign for in the past. Show was around 3 hours and 20 minutes.

1 yr ago was the better half and my last pre-pandemic show. had free tix for red dirt texas country's casey donahew band at joes on wede. little too crowded overall, tho we kept to the back where it wasn't as crowded. donahew was ok, but nothing special. did eat a little dinner at joes rt before the show, but nothing fancy or expensive.

One year ago today was my second to last pre-pandemic show, They Might Be Giants playing Flood in full at the Vic. I won the tickets and brought Rango as my +1. It was a great show, but I remember it being the first time I was cognizant of how close people were standing next to me, and kept a little more distance than I normally would.

25 years ago today I saw The Presidents of the United States of America here in town. This was arguably at the height of their popularity - I think 'Peaches' was the #1 video on MTV that night. It was really cold outside when I lined up. They didn't have a coat check, so I was holding on to my coat for the whole show. It was a fun show, they played most of their first record, a few new tunes, and their cover of 'Video Killed the Radio Star.'
22 years ago I saw Sugar Ray/Everlast/2 Skinnee J's. 2 Skinnee J's were always a blast to watch. Everlast I don't remember much of, except he tried to do a rocked-up version of 'Jump Around' that didn't really work. Sugar Ray was good, I still like a few of their songs (don't tell anyone). In retrospect, I shouldn't have gone because I gave up doing something cool with friends, and instead trekked to STL by my lonesome. I wish someone would've talked me out of it.
