4 years ago yesterday Emma and I drove from Chicago to St. Louis to see U2 on the Joshua Tree tour. Emma's an even bigger U2 fan than me, so we were hyped. We had gotten in the night before and were planning on spending the day in the city before heading to the show that night. However, the day before, a white cop was acquitted in the killing of an unarmed black man (Anthony Lamar Smith) and protests were sweeping through the city. Justifiably, the show the next night was cancelled. However! Emma and I were still in St. Louis w/ fuck-all to do for another night. So we checked out Busch Stadium, the Arch, toured the Anheuser Busch factory, played a game of chess at the World Chess Hall of Fame, and concluded the day at the City Museum. Maybe not as cool as hearing "One Tree Hill" live, but it was a good trip nonetheless. My girlfriend and I had tickets to that show too. Same here.

on this day in 2005, i saw... eleventh dream day at the hideout block party. this was a really good time. i'd never heard eleventh dream day before and enjoyed them. first (and maybe second time) I saw 11th DD, baird figi was still one of their guitarists. missed the entire 11th DD era when figi (who is still alive) was replaced by the now late wink o'banion. caught 11th DD for the 3rd and to date last time with their current lineup. j b bean (11th DD drummer) was hanging out in the audience at the thalia zedek (live skull, uzi, come, etc.) band show on the hideout's patio on wednesday, but I don't know her well enough to say hello, as I do w/ her mekon pal who was there and who she hangs out a lot with.

27 years ago on this date I saw The Rolling Stones on the Voodoo Lounge tour at the football stadium here in town. This was a big deal for our town, as they skipped KC and STL to play here. My parents had tickets, and I decided to go because "it's the Stones, I like their oldies, it'll be cool." I had no idea it was going to be tons of lights, huge screens, fire out of a lighting tower, Mick Jagger dancing all over the place, and fireworks at the end. It blew my teenage mind, and it's up there with the best shows I've ever seen. www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-rolling-stones/1994/faurot-field-at-memorial-stadium-columbia-mo-43d6ff9f.html

The only minor silver lining was that I got to hear U2 for soundcheck at Arrowhead stadium when I was at a Royals game a few days before the STL show. I passed on their KC show so we could take a road trip to STL. They played "New Year's Day." My one and only time hearing U2 play live.

on this day in 1999, i saw the slackers, the pilfers, and basically any pittsburgh area ska band at carnegie mellon university. this was a decent enough afternoon hanging out with a couple new-ish friends. i'd met vic from the slackers before through some mutual friends. we talked for a bit and then he gave me his number under the impression that i booked shows. on this day in 2003, i saw broken social scene, metric, and jason collett at the first unitarian church in philly. jason collett was all right. metric sounded great. they were who i really went to see. but their merch prices were outrageous, as i recall. broken social scene was fine. i knew a few songs before this show and was annoyed by someone in the band pointing out their timing between songs, like "this next song is in 7/5ths. let's see if you can keep up." c'mon, fuck off, guy. on this day in 2005, i saw röyksopp and annie at metro. this show was a lot of fun. they had a very large inflatable boombox as stage decoration. total dance party. after that, i went to the bottle to see balkan beat box. on this day in 2016, i saw crx at schubas. this is a strokes side project from nic. he's clearly not a frontman, but they had a few good tunes and his guitar playing was awesome. on this day in 2018, i saw natalie prass and stella donnelly at lincoln hall. this was a really fun show. i was digging that new natalie prass album and she had a good band behind her. she made some comment about never hearing Born to Run before that day and then i read about it later: www.vice.com/en/article/7xj43d/natalie-prass-bruce-springsteen-born-to-run-interview-blind-spots.

23 years ago on this date I went to the BoCoMo Fall Festivus at the county fairgrounds here in town where I saw Everclear, Possum Dixon, The Getaway People, 2 Skinnee J's, and MU330. This was the only time this 'fest' ever happened. I remember loving The Getaway People's set, they covered 'Back in Black' as well. Everclear was fine, didn't enjoy getting pushed around in the pit though. Gravity Kills were the last to play, I left before them b/c I had seen them before.
9 years ago I saw Swans and Xiu Xiu at the now-defunct Beaumont Club in KC. Ex-boarder PulpAffliction was there too. This was my first time seeing both bands. Swans sounded loud and great, but the stage lights were on the entire time - there was like, no atmosphere. It was like watching a movie in a well-lit room. Xiu Xiu was intense. It was just Jamie solo, surrounded by instruments. It was like watching a guy spill his guts to a psychiatrist.

11 years ago on this date I saw Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at the Blue Note. Even though Ms. Jones admitted feeling a bit under the weather, she and the band still put on a good show, though maybe not as good as when I saw them at ACL (review coming soon!). Grace Potter and the Nocturnals opened, I knew nothing of their music, but their live show - in particular Potter's stage presence - impressed me. I remember thinking "this band is kind of reminding me of Jefferson Airplane", and later in their set, whaddaya know, they covered 'White Rabbit'.

on this day in 2006, i saw claudia calderon and rodrigo y gabriela at old town school of folk music. this was part of a weekly world music series. i have in my notes that it was a $4 cover. why not just round up to $5? anyway, i'd heard a few songs by rodrigo y gabriela before this and they were fantastic that night. this is the best i've seen them, though the other sets were at fests. they played a few covers and the crowd was really into them. i had no idea they'd blow up. they were a tough act to follow. claudia calderon was fine, but i don't remember much of her set.
on this day in 2008, i was at the hideout block party and saw neko case, vieux farka touré, black mountain, monotonix, and plastic people of the universe. monotonix and neko were by far the day's highlights. i didn't know anything about monotonix before this and thought they were great. (plus, their t-shirt i bought that day is super comfortable and i still wear it regularly.) not great musically, but very entertaining. maybe the only time i've seen a drummer disassemble a kit during a set and also light it afire.
on this day in 2010, i saw crocodiles and heavy times at the bottle. i think this was a really good heavy times set. this was the first time i saw crocodiles and enjoyed them. i liked their two records up until then quite a bit, so there really wasn't much they had to play that i didn't like.
on this day in 2013, i saw disappears, weekend, and outside world at the bottle. this was starting to get into when disappears went into a direction i wasn't as enthused with, but i think i still liked this show.
on this day in 2019, i saw jenny lewis and margo price at the goose island block party. i'd seen both before and really enjoyed these sets. jenny lewis played "silver lining" and "i never", the latter being one i didn't expect to hear at all, so i was very pleased with that. and the album she was touring on was great, so hearing those songs again was pleasant. earlier in the evening, i was at a table with a drink and waiting for my girlfriend to return from a food line. the girl next to me was terrible at subtly trying to take a picture of me. i asked her to stop. she said she was trying to take pictures of her with other guys to send to her ex to make him jealous. i then asked if she wanted to wait for my girlfriend to return so she could get a photo with both of us and imply a threesome to him. she did not think that was a funny idea.

8 years ago on this date I saw Rancid at the Granada in Lawrence, KS. This was the only show where I forgot my ticket. Fortunately, it was an e-ticket and my brother let me use his PC at his office in KC to print off another one. This was the first time I had seen Rancid at their own show, the other times were on Warped tours. Good show overall, lots of energy from the crowd, I was just happy they played some tunes from Life Won't Wait, as it's my favorite album of theirs, and they had played nothing from it the previous times I had seen them.

on this day in 2007, i saw bonde de role at the empty bottle. this was like a brazilian electropop band. this was still with the original singer, who then left the band after this tour. i'd heard their album, enjoyed it, and danced a lot at this show. but i don't recall it being a very good show. one of my friends was recently divorced and was basically making eyes with any single woman at this show. at one point i remember saying to him "she wants nothing to do with you except to stand in front of you for a better view."
on this day in 2008, i was at the hideout block party and saw ratatat, the new pornographers, rhymefest, robbie fulks, dark meat, mucca pazza, and tim fite. this was a nice day. i always thought i needed to be in the thick of the crowd to enjoy big fest sets. for whatever reason, i spent much of this day toward the back with a conversation going with friends while mostly paying attention to the bands. it was a different fest vibe for me.
on this day in 2011, i saw explosions in the sky and viva voce at the canopy club. whatever album they were touring on is not my favorite of theirs, so i was glad that the set wasn't concentrated on that.
on this day in 2012, i saw john cale and zola jesus at the short-lived brilliant corners of popular amusements. i was really disappointed with this because he played nothing from my favorite albums of his. i'd listened to his most recent releases ahead of this show and heard many of those songs, but i was really hoping for some very old cuts.
on this day in 2018, i was at the goose island block party and saw tv on the radio and sunflower bean. this is one of the better tv on the radio sets i've seen. sunflower bean was also pretty good. crowd control at this show was kind of bad, but i got lucky to maneuver into a decent spot.

on this day in 2001, i saw sigur ros and papa m at the TLA in philly. they didn't have string accompaniment on this tour. so it was missing a little something. they didn't quite fill in a few spots where strings carry weight. most of the set was also songs from ( ), which didn't come out until a year later. so there were some rough versions of songs that they eventually polished up. i'd heard about them leading up to coachella that year and became obsessed with Agaetis Byrjun over the summer. so i was disappointed to not hear more from that album but also that its songs didn't really affect me. i'd hyped up in my head that hearing them live would be a transcendent experience akin to floating on silk clouds while crying tears of gold. instead it was just a couple notches up from a rehearsal. but then they ended on what'd become "popplagið" and that was as close to the fantasy as they got that night. the friends i went with liked it more than i did probably because they were noiseheads. the other key part of this evening was that i bought Is This It at the record shop across the street from the venue beforehand. that's had a much bigger impact on me in the last 20 years than sigur ros. this show was filmed for Reverb on hbo -
on this day in 2012, i saw apache dropout, the yolks, high tension wires at the burlington. i never knew what i was getting into with the yolks because some nights they were great and some nights they were awful. but i think this was one of the better times i saw them.

25 years ago on this date I saw Alanis Morissette at Riverport in STL. When I found out about this show, I drove to an ATM, got some cash, went to the record store, and bought 4 lawn tickets. The other 3 people I bought tickets for dropped out, so my dorm roommate - an opposite of me in the social department - and two girls he knew took the extras. We all drove up together. I thought the show was really good at the time, Alanis played all of the songs on Jagged Little Pill, plus a couple of new songs. She didn't talk to the crowd much, just a few 'thank yous' and 'you guys are sweet' ('NO, YOU ARE!!' one guy replied).
9 years ago on this date I went to a day of the Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival in downtown Columbia, where I saw Wanda Jackson and Al Green. I had run the Roots N Blues half marathon that morning, so my legs were sore. Wanda was good, she covered an Amy Winehouse song - I forgot which one - and mentioned working with Jack White. Reverend Green was also good, though at the time I thought he had cut his show short b/c he was slated to play 90 minutes and only played an hour. He ended with 'Let's Stay Together'.

26 years ago on this date I saw R.E.M. at Riverport in STL. It was kind of a chilly night, this girl who I had known ever since I was a kid went with me. We had lawn seats. The show was very good, but they played a lot of what I had heard them do in KC when I saw them earlier that summer. I wanted to hear songs I hadn't seen them play, though the new ones were cool ('Departure', in particular). The HOLY SHIT YES moment for me was when Michael Stipe introduced a song as "we've only played this 7 times in the last 6 years", and it was 'The One I Love'. I freaked out, as it was my favorite song by them at the time, and hadn't seen any clue of them playing it on the tour previously, I felt like we were getting something rare (apparently, they had just started playing it live regularly again). Oh, and Radiohead opened. I remember they played 'Creep' and '(nice dream)', the latter of which I asked my friend, "is this song called 'My String'"? Who knew they'd be headlining the same venue years later?
5 years ago on this date I saw Beck at Stifel Theater in STL. This was the first out-of-town show my now-fiancee and I went to. The show was fine, but I don't need to see Beck again for a while. Unless he releases another great album, or does something like a 'play the whole album' or a solo acoustic tour, I'm out. The new songs he played made no impression on me, though he did do 'Paper Tiger', my favorite song on Sea Change.

on this day in 2000, i saw the chickens, enon, and the modey lemon at roboto in pittsburgh. i think q and not u was also supposed to be on this bill. they were listed on the website that afternoon. when i showed up, they were not on the set times. i asked the guy at the door about them and he scoffed that they'd cancelled weeks ago. so i told him maybe the website should've been updated. he did not care for that reply. this venue did not have a stage, so bands just set up wherever. the modey lemon played in the back corner and had a lot of friends around. they were fun. enon took up a little more space and played an assorted set. the chickens, however, set up in the middle of the floor stretching the length of the room. they left a huge chunk of the back empty. (later on they changed their name to something else, but i've forgotten to what by now.)
on this day in 2005, i saw the national and clap your hands say yeah at schubas. my girlfriend introduced me to the national in the spring and bought tickets for us to go to the late show. the room was full for clap your hands say yeah and then a lot of people left right after them. i did not think they were good that night. i'd liked Alligator and SSFDL, but this was the night i became a national fan. i thought they were great. they had that good balance between the slow songs and the ragers. the musicianship was a tier above what i expected. matt was hammered, but his stage presence was solid. (my girlfriend's roommate was also hammered and passed out while leaning on the stage.) this is a top 3 national show for me and maybe a top 20 show overall.
on this day in 2011, i saw cut copy and washed out at the canopy club. this was a fun night split between In Ghost Colours and Zonoscope. my recollection is they sounded good and the crowd was really into it. afterward, we saw the dodos and luyas. i was so tired from a full day of work, driving to champaign, and then being at my second show of the night. i remember hardly anything about these sets.
on this day in 2012, i saw bobby womack and helado negro under the big top at brilliant corners of popular amusements. i remember womack wore a bright red suit and leather cap. "across 110th street" was early in the set and then he played a handful of covers. i wasn't super familiar with his catalog, but i knew enough to enjoy this for what it was. it wasn't spectacular, but the guy's a legend.

I was at that National/CYHSY show too. I honestly think about half the room cleared out when CYHSY was done, since they were the big hype darling of the moment. The National were great, and Matt did his usual thing of walking around in the crowd during one song, but it was pretty small scale at Schubas compared to what he typically does. Also about halfway through the show I looked and noticed the singer from CYHSY was standing next to me watching the show too.
