6 years ago on this date I saw Kool Keith at Rose Music Hall here in town. It was just him with a DJ, and he was pretty good, did songs from all throughout his career (including 'Blue Flowers'). This show was woefully underattended.
A year later on the same date at the same venue I saw Titus Andronicus with A Giant Dog. This was a case of 'maybe they'll be better live', as I had never liked TA on record. They were, indeed, better live, I enjoyed it.
4 years ago on this date I saw Broken Social Scene at the Pageant in STL. For whatever reason, I have never been able to get into this band, but boarder Timbo loves them and he and his now-wife were planning a trip to STL around this, and they invited me and one of their friends along (road trip!). The show was fine, it didn't move the needle of my fandom for them either way, but the whole day was great. We went to the City Museum in the afternoon, and ate at PI (a pizza place across from the venue) beforehand.

I hung out in the bar during Frightened Rabbit, as I had seen them before at Lolla in '10, and they didn't do much for me then. Probably should've given them another try.

on this day in 2011, i was at pygmalion and saw braid, deerhoof, japandroids, xiu xiu, strfkr, owen, asobi seksu, and someone still loves you boris yeltsin. i went to this with a friend who i'd only met the previous year. we ended up at a lot of shows together in that time. a few weeks after this, he moved to europe. we've been to primavera twice since then, but this was the last show i went to with him in the US. i really liked strfkr and japandroids. i must've tweeted something about the former because they have followed me on twitter since then. after the big show, we saw bass drum of death on the patio of like a pizza restaurant. they were pretty good.
on this day in 2017, i was at the hideout block party and saw screaming females, man or astroman, nina nastasia, danielson famile, and dianogah. i have never been able to get too into screaming females, but they were fine. man or astroman was entertaining, as usual. nina nastasia was pleasant. i hadn't seen a danielson show in 11 years, so this was a nice reminder of how a little of them can go a long way for me. they're just quirky enough for a half-hour.

on this day in 2008, i saw james at the vic. they played a lot from their latest album, which i'd maybe listened to once, but probably half of Laid and then a good smattering from other albums. i was in my mid-20s and probably one of the youngest people there who didn't go with a parent. on this day in 2009, i saw miike snow at the empty bottle. i'd really enjoyed them at lolla earlier in the year and this show did not disappoint either. then i followed it up with the soft pack and smith westerns at the chopin. this is the best i ever saw soft pack/muslims. they were tearing it up while playing a lot of new songs. this show was great. one thing that'll always be tattooed in my head is the screams from the women in front of me when jennifer hudson got out there for "nothing compares 2 u." on this day in 2018, i saw iron chic at subterranean. i biked down there and popped the chain on damen right underneath the kennedy. it took me a few minutes to put things back together and my hands were absolutely caked in grease. when i got inside i went to the bathroom upstairs to wash my hands and the soap situation was pitiful. one guy saw me scrubbing my hands and exclaimed "oh my god... what happened to your hands???" i think he thought it was a condition, like gangrene or whatever. he was much calmer when i told him it was just grease. iron chic sounded really good.

13 years ago on this date I was at day 1 of Austin City Limits Fest 2008. I went by myself again, I felt I had a better idea how to navigate a huge festival than last time. I remember seeing Vampire Weekend in the early afternoon, this was when they were getting a lot of press for their first record. They were ok, but I've never been a fan of them. I then went over to the stage next door for Del the Funkee Homosapian, but too much talk and rap from his hype team made me leave before he came out. The highlights of the day were Gogol Bordello and David Byrne, who performed back to back on one of the main stages. I had no idea Byrne's show was going to involve choreography, and how fun it would be, singing along to 'Life During Wartime' and 'Once in a Lifetime' was a joy. I left early, as I had no interest in seeing Manu Chao or The Mars Volta, who were closing the two big stages.
11 years ago on this date I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at The Blue Note. This was a woefully underattended show, I kind of felt bad for them. They were pretty good though, I was glad they played 'I'm a Ghost' and 'The Sons of Cain'.
6 years ago on this date I went to one day of the Roots N Blues fest here in town where I saw Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Irma Thomas, and Here Come the Mummies. This was a solid day of good music. Lucinda ended her set with a cover of 'Rockin' in the Free World', which surprised me - it didn't seem like a song she would choose to cover. Dwight was pretty good, he ended his set with covers of 'I Feel Fine' and 'Suspicious Minds'.
5 years ago on this date I saw a solo Destroyer show at Cafe Berlin here in town. I was surprised this restaurant-by-day had started booking shows, and they had gotten this. There was one restroom, and several of us were in line for it, when Dan walks up and we let him get in front. He said something along the lines of, "I had forgotten how far it was to travel from Baton Rouge to Columbia, MO." His set was good.

even though i wasn't there, i distinctly remember hearing about coldplay filming the "lost!" music video at united center on the VLV tour
i did a mayer hawthorne show at purdue that i believe was partially filmed for a video but i have no idea which one nor do i really care to find out
*full concert videos don't count for this question but i guess i'm still curious

That's the only one I'm aware of. Edit: Apparently they used some of the film for the video for Take My Scars as well. I remember them telling us they were filming but I don't remember if it was over both songs.

Edit... I got my dates mixed up, so here's a two-for-one post!
September 26, 2008... The first day of ACL Fest 2008
2008 was one of the best ACLs I've attended. Friday started with the ACL house band, Asleep at the Wheel. I also caught early sets from Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend. The set of the day was Jamie Lidell, and the highlight was when he closed with "Multiply." I was on the rail with some fellow boarders, singing along, when Jamie put the mic in front of me and let me sing a couple of lines. The afternoon and evening transitioned into Mates of State, NERD (yes I committed sacrilege and saw them instead of David Byrne), and The Swell Season. The one downer were the nights headliners. One was Manu Chao, who I had seen before but wasn't keen on seeing again. So I opted for 30 minutes of The Mars Volta.
September 27, 2008
I took at a peek at my journal entry from around fest time. According to me, circa 2008, CSS played my favorite set of the weekend. A lot of it was in part because of the company. Ross, Chuck, theTood and their respective boos joined me for a Texas version of PantsOff DanceOff. Plus I had my stylish green feather boa with me. CSS is the perfect festival band.
The other highlight was Beck. It was my first time seeing him, and I just remember smiling and having a blast the whole time. He played Time Bomb. He played Mixed Bizness. I drank a lot of wine. Plus, this was the one and only time I got inside information about Lollapalooza. I was hanging out with Ross and Osko, and at some point during the night, Ross mentioned that he knew who was headlining Lolla 2009. Then he said the magic words: Depeche Mode.
The set I wasn't expecting much from, but became one of my faves of the weekend, was John Fogerty. The band laid into the opening riff to Traveling Band and I was off. Such a good mix of solo and CCR stuff. He probably should've headlined.
The Fratellis, Bavu Blakes, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Electric Touch, and The Black Keys rounded out the day.

on this day in 2007, i saw nick lowe and ron sexsmith at park west. this was lowe by himself with only an acoustic guitar. i don't think i knew that ahead of time and was apprehensive when he walked out. but he was great. near the end he played "i knew the bride", "what's so funny (about peace, love, and understanding)?", and "heart of the city" in a row. the crowd loved it.
on this day in 2009, i saw soulsavers at double door. mark lanegan was touring with them since he was the main vocalist on their recent album. this album had some great songs and i think they played everything from it. they also dropped in a cover of zz top's "jesus just left chicago." i really enjoyed this set. but i was also pretty distracted because their guitarist looked so familiar and i spent way too much time trying to figure out where i knew him from. so afterward i asked him who else he plays for and he said he'd never played chicago before. so i asked if he played in philadelphia. he shook his head and didn't want to play 20 questions. i left it at that.
on this day in 2013, i saw travis at the vic. earlier in the day or the day before, my girlfriend revealed just how much she was looking forward to this. she'd apparently been a mod on a travis messageboard in high school and college but had never seen them. we sat near the front of the balcony and i think she sang every word to every song softly to herself. i had no idea before then how big of a fan she was. i'd liked a few of their albums, but was far from an expert. this was a fun show. they played everything i hoped to hear.
on this day in 2014, i saw constantines at neumo's. they had taken some time off and then reunited for a handful of shows. my girlfriend had lived in seattle and this was conveniently a weekend we were there. this show cooked. i'm always anxious about reunions, but this was like no time had passed. they played a great variety, some new arrangements, etc. we had a great time.

That was Day 2, which was 13 years ago on this date. Fleet Foxes played early out in the hot sun, their music isn't really my thing but it was pleasant. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were awesome, they closed with a cover of 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World'. I walked around for a bit afterwards and watched only 5 minutes of Spiritualized, I wish I had stayed longer. Fogerty kicked ass, played some solo tunes and CCR classics, including 'Fortunate Son' and 'Bad Moon Rising'. Then I slowly made my way to the other end of the park to see Beck, who was one of my most anticipated sets, I hadn't seen him in over 8 years. He was good, not great. Based on past performances, I thought it would be really entertaining, but it was just OK. 9 years ago on this date I saw Polica at Rose Music Hall here in town. I went b/c ex-boarder PulpAffliction was driving up from KC for this and asked if I wanted to go too. I hadn't heard any of their music, I thought it was decent, kinda reminded me of Portishead at times. 2 years ago on this date I was at one day of the Roots N Blues fest with my now-fiancee to see Patti Griffin and John Prine. It was forecast to rain, but it ultimately got pushed back until after midnight, so that was nice. Griffin was fine, Prine was excellent. I remember having a mental "whoa" moment at some of the lyrics in 'Jim Johnson'.

Two years ago was Brandi Carlile at Mission Ballroom - first show I had seen at that venue. That's probably the spot I'm looking forward to most to see a show at again.
Quickly approaching two years since my last show, but I won't quite reach that mark with James Blake tonight.

on this day in 2002, i saw super furry animals and dead meadow at laga. one of my friends was way into SFA and talked some people into going. i did not need much convincing, but i didn't know much about SFA. and i thought they were wonderful. they set up surround sound in the club and used it effectively. the music was interesting. the visuals were good. the costume change into the yetis was really fun. i've been a fan since. this was a very good gateway show. dead meadow was also pretty good, but the crowd wasn't so into them.
on this day in 2008, i saw nick cave & the bad seeds at the riv. this was the first time i saw him. he'd been hyped up big time for years and there were high expectations. this was a very good setlist with almost everything i wanted to hear from older albums. it was really enjoyable, even if the riv wasn't enforcing the smoking ban. a few weeks later, i went to dinner with some coworkers and one woman who i didn't know well mentioned nick cave while we were chatting about music. so i asked "did you see him at the riv a couple weeks ago?" she had no idea he'd played here and was stunned she missed out. so i told her a little bit about the show. then someone interrupted me with a question. when i turned back to talk with her, she was bawling. i have no idea what happened in that 30 seconds.
on this day in 2010, i saw strange boys, gentleman jesse, and natural child at the bottle. i walked in midway through natural child's set and the singer was bantering a bit between songs. the one thing from this night that i'll always remember was his story while someone was changing a guitar string, reminiscent of the dead kennedys' "night of the living rednecks." it essentially went: "in high school, our friend mike - his phone number's 615 123 0922 - could get into a bar in the next town over. one night he hits it off with a girl. she asks him back to her place. when he stands up, he realizes she has no legs and is in a wheelchair. he wheels her down the street to her house. she says her dad is inside watching tv so they go to a swing set in the backyard. she tells him to put her in the toddler bucket seat and they can have sex there. when they're done, he wheels her back to the house and then carries her upstairs to her room. as he leaves, he passes the room where her dad's watching tv. he says 'hey, thanks for bringing her in. most guys just leave her in the swing.' this next song's about mike." that story took at least 5 minutes to tell and had a handful of twists that i have since forgotten. gentleman jesse put on a fun set. strange boys weren't really my thing.
on this day in 2014, i saw rocket from the crypt at neumo's. this is a lower tier RFTC show in my book. something just wasn't really clicking that night. plus, a guy in the crowd next to us was annoying.

5 years ago I saw Titus Andronicus with A Giant Dog at the Bottom Lounge. Third time seeing Titus and one of my best experiences with them. This was right after they locked in the band that's actually been semi-permanent for once? And they were already extremely tight. Maybe not as good as the show I saw the year before in Akron that left me with semi-permanent tinnitus, but amazing nonetheless. A Giant Dog also put on one of my favorite opening sets of all time. I was really into their record at the time and was dancing and singing along up front - lead singer grabbed and sang into my face at one point lmaooo. This was also my last show before I turned 21 - still have the photo of my final sharpie'd X on my hand.
