Oh, and apparently 3 years ago I saw the New York Philharmonic do Bruckner's 8th Symphony. It was nice, the tickets were free, but goddamn it was entirely one movement so - even at the peak of me listening to classical - I had trouble staying focused.

14 years ago on this date I saw Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem at Starlight Theater in KC. This was my first time seeing both bands, and I was very excited. In LCD's set, Will and Win Butler came out to do backing vocals on 'North American Scum', and Regine played xylophone on 'Someone Great'. Arcade Fire played a lot from both Funeral and Neon Bible, and did a cover of The Magnetic Fields' 'Born On A Train', after Win mentioned that KC was a "train town." I found a $20 bill right at my feet after the show. Fantastic night all around.
13 years ago I was at Day 3 of ACL 2008. This was another hot day, I watched The Kills in the early afternoon and Alison - dressed in black - almost collapsed on stage, they had to pause their set so she could drink some water. After that, she was fine. I also saw Stars, Neko Case, Okkervil River, a bit of The Raconteurs, and Tegan and Sara. T+S was one of my most anticipated sets, I became a fan of theirs after they were announced for the fest. They were very good, though I wish they had longer than 45 minutes. Foo Fighters were the headliners, I only watched a few minutes of their set before heading out. I remember hearing Taylor's drum solo during 'Stacked Actors' while waiting for the bus.
3 years ago I was at the Roots N Blues fest here in town for The Avett Brothers and Lake Street Dive. I wouldn't have gone to this by myself, but my fiancee really likes Lake Street Dive. It was a nice night, both bands were OK.

ACL Fest 2008 Day 3, or as Jamie Hince of The Kills declared, "See us when it's dark. This is bullshit!" After all, late September in central Texas can still be f'n hot.
My last day of ACL '08 was short on quantity, long on quality. In addition to a rip-roaring 1:30 PM set from The Kills (closed aptly enough with "Fried My Little Brains").
Tegan and Sara played my set of the day, including the first time I heard "When I Get Up" live.
Also seen on this day were Nicole Atkins and the Sea, Stars, Silversun Pickups, Okkervil River and The Raconteurs. My one regret is skipping out on Foo Fighters headlining set.

Yeah, it was so hot during that Kills set. Most of the band stayed as far back on the stage as possible to stay out of the sun. If I remember right, I think their bus driver had taken off for Mexico with their gear a couple of days earlier?
I think the rest of my day was a little bit of City and Colour, Tegan and Sara, Against Me, Blues Traveler, and Band of Horses on the rail. It was a great BOH set. We tried a few minutes of Foo Fighters, but left early, too.

LCD was great. Yeah was a highlight because i think the strobe/disco ball came on. AF was fun too and it was my first time seeing them. i think all songs considered did one of those live tapings of a show on that tour and i played it all the time. i remember them playing antichrist television blues and the dude next to me said something like "this is one of those shows where the opener is way better than the headliner." the dude seemed to like power out later in the set. also i lost $20.

IRT LCD/Arcade Fire: I was at that show and really enjoyed it, but if I remember correctly, it was a bit chilly that night. "North American Scum" was great, but I was very happy to hear "New York I love you..." Overall, great show except for losing that $20 bill...đ

On September 28, 2001, I saw Weezer and theSTART at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Cold was also originally on this tour, which is hilarious, but they had dropped off by the time this show happened.
On September 28, 2012, I saw the Afghan Whigs at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. They covered "Edge of Seventeen" at one point, and ended their set by playing "Purple Rain". School of Seven Bells opened, which must have been one of their last shows.

actually a good question - has anyone been to other shows where they filmed music videos*? Yes, but it was "Festival Song" by Good Charlotte, so we're not going to talk about that.
The live footage from Garbage's "Sex Is Not the Enemy" video (including the part where Shirley gets dragged offstage by DC cops) was filmed at the 9:30 Club but I saw them in Baltimore on that tour, so I'm a big dummy.

How does one solve the great Soundgarden/Arcade Fire dilemma from Lollapalooza 2010? You buy tickets to see Arcade Fire in Seattle the following month. Now, I donât really need a reason to visit Seattle, but seeing Arcade Fire before they became terrible was good enough for me. Calexico opened the show at Key Arena, although I donât remember much about them. As for Arcade Fire, thankfully they kept The Suburbs material to a minimum.

on this day in 2007, i saw nick lowe and ron sexsmith at park west. this was lowe by himself with only an acoustic guitar. i don't think i knew that ahead of time and was apprehensive when he walked out. but he was great. near the end he played "i knew the bride", "what's so funny (about peace, love, and understanding)?", and "heart of the city" in a row. the crowd loved it. I was at this show. Really enjoyed Nick Lowe even though we had an awkward spot because we should up kinda late.

4 years ago I saw Real Estate and Alex G at the Revolution Oktoberfest. Real Estate was good but not memorably so. Alex G was not my cup of tea, but I've never been a huge fan. I remember him seeming a little disinterested in this show - however, I give him props for playing "Brick" from the recently released Rocket.
3 years ago was the National's You Can Never Leave New York (I think?) fest at Forest Hills Stadium. Adia Victoria opened with an incredible set, Phoebe Bridgers was next and crushed, highlight was "Me and My Dog" only a week or so after that single came out, Cigarettes After Sex played one of the more boring sets I've ever seen, then Jason Isbell and the National absolutely delivered the goods with incredible full sets afterwards. Jason Isbell's "Cover Me Up" absolutely crushed me, and I enjoyed hearing not one (Motion Sickness) but TWO Ryan Adams diss tracks (Chaos and Clothes) in one night. Later I got to hear "England" for the first time, which was a huge highlight, Phoebe came out to do Sorrow, and all and all I had an amazing time.

Edit: also found what I wrote in the reviews thread about a wild CAS fan experience: "Fuck, they were one of the most boring, least dynamic bands I've ever seen. Also, s/o to the tripping dude next to me who threw flowers at the beginning of the set, then, after someone had passed out and everyone was quiet while medics came, shouted to the band - "Hey those are my flowers! Do you like the flowers? I threw them!" To which I replied, "Shut up dude, this isn't about you." He retorted, "Oh yea? Did you bring flowers? I didn't think so..." So that was definitely...uh....something."

9 years ago on this date I saw Guided By Voices at the now-defunct Plush in STL. I saw them at Pitchfork in 2011, but I had never seen them at their own show before. Like a GBV album, it was excessive, but in a good way. Lots of songs played (probably 30+), multiple encores, it wound up being around 2 hours. With their huge catalog of tunes, I'm glad they still play 'I Am A Scientist', 'Game of Pricks' and 'Tractor Rape Chain'. And if you didn't like the song they were playing, you'd get a new one in a minute or two. Someone had a six pack of PBR in front of me they were handing out, I asked for one and they tried to give me one that was already opened, I said no thanks. I had a good time, I left sweaty and smelling like cheap beer.

11 years ago on this date I saw The National at the Pageant in STL. They were touring for High Violet, which I loved, so I drove up and bought a ticket at the door. The show was excellent, probably my favorite time I've seen them. Owen Pallett opened and he was cool too. My only complaint was that there was a couple in front of me staring longingly into each other's eyes and making out at times during the show. Get a room you two.

on this day in 2006, i saw harvey danger and so many dynamos at schubas. they played a decent mix of their latest album and the debut. notably, "flagpole sitta" was not played. some people were sour about that. but i didn't miss it and thought they really sounded good. my girlfriend's ex-husband apparently knew sean nelson and she'd met him a couple times before, so she wanted to say hello afterward. she made a beeline for him as he walked offstage and caught up when he stepped outside the music room. many other people wanted to say hi too and i remember him swarmed by a crowd and saying "where is the green room?? this is terrible."
on this day in 2007, i saw the hives at metro. this was an off-night from their tour opening for maroon 5 and sara bareilles. i cannot even imagine how they were received by those crowds. looking at their tour dates, it seems they played a lot of club shows during the tour. pedro is a great frontman and they were a lot of fun. my girlfriend left midway through and said she was tired of their schtick.
on this day in 2010, i saw the acorn and basia bulat at schubas. i don't remember much about this show. i'd heard some songs by the acorn and thought they were fine. i do remember the opener playing harp and wondering how much trouble that had to be while touring.
on this day in 2016, i saw merchandise at the empty bottle. i think they were trying out some new songs, but my recollection is this was a good time with some old friends who i hadn't seen at shows much.

Ayyy this show ripped - second time seeing Jeff that summer, after his all-timer festival set at Pitchfork. Did not mosh this time, but respectfully enjoyed the show from the crowd. Would see him again about 8 months later at Logan Square! I also caught Aldous Harding on this date 2 years ago. A truly wonderful show with that perfect combination of intimate venue, rapt, quiet audience, beautiful music, and surprisingly great stage presence. Aldous was wonderful and that evening was one of my favorite concerts of 2019. I still revisit Designer about once a month too.

Apparently this is Sigur Ros day for me, I've seen them twice on this date, pretty sure both shows were at the Chicago. The one 8 years ago was outstanding from what I remember. I think I was a little sour about the one 5 years ago, since the Chicago theater ticket mess started around that time, and my seat was pretty far back from where I was usually able to get one. But now I think that may have been the last time I saw the band unfortunately...
Also went to that Revolution Oktoberfest for White Lung, and then made a quick dash a few blocks away to see Against Me!, pretty sure they were at the Concord.

on this day in 2000, i saw edna's goldfish, the pilfers, and the gadjits at wetlands. this was a matinee show on a sunday. i went with a couple concert buddies, one who knew several people in these bands. we had a good time. i carried a messenger bag almost everywhere around then and had hung it on a hook at the back during the show. when i went to grab it as i left, two kids were making out right in front of the hooks. i tried gently to not disturb them, but touched the guy as i was pulling my bag back and he was aghast like "what the fuck are you doing???" right, like it's my fault you're blocking where people leave bags and jackets.
on this day in 2004, i saw bloc party at transit. they'd released an EP with 5 songs, but there was a lot of buzz around them even with no album on the horizon. "banquet" was kind of a big deal. i was excited to see them and they were a lot of fun. this show was tied to a DNC fundraiser, for some reason.
on this day in 2009, i saw manic street preachers at metro. this show cooked. i was blown away by how good they were. lots of hits mixed in with new album tracks. this was the first time i saw them and made me a bigger fan than i had been.
on this day in 2011, i saw white rabbits, rural alberta advantage, and cave singers at a cultivate fest in lincoln park. this ran one or two years and seemed mostly like a food/wine event that some bands played. a couple of my friends were way into RAA. i liked white rabbits. in the evening, i saw wild beasts at lincoln hall. i think this was a very good show.

15 years ago on this date I saw The Strokes at Memorial Hall in KC. The venue is weird - it looks like a courthouse from the front, inside there is stadium seating and a wood floor, like a basketball court, and a stage. I was getting high school gymnasium vibes. I had heard Strokes shows could be hit-or-miss, this night was a hit. The band sounded really good, and they played a good mix of songs from their (at the time) 3 albums, and they covered 'Walk On the Wild Side' in the encore. Lots of girls screaming for Julian as well. This was also the night I found that Jack + Pepsi wasn't as good as Jack + Coke.
12 years ago on this date I saw Them Crooked Vultures at Stubb's Outdoor Amphitheatre in Austin, TX. This was one of their first performances, they hadn't released an album yet. I thought some songs were better than others, but it was totally worth it to see John Paul Jones play bass, and Dave Grohl wail on drums.
8 years ago on this date I saw Nine Inch Nails at Mizzou Arena here in town. I had already seen this particular show in STL, so I bought a ticket outside for cheap from someone. The person I was next to was the seller's mother or sister, I forgot which, they introduced themselves to me. Even though I kind of knew what to expect, it was still a cool show. I remember Trent spoke to the crowd: "This is Columbia, right? Missouri? We're just at that point of 'get off the bus, play, get on the bus'." He also said there was nothing to do in the town he grew up in, and encouraged us to download all the NIN albums for free.
4 years ago on this date I was at a day of the Roots N Blues Fest with my fiancee, where we saw Emmylou Harris and John Prine. Both performances were excellent, Emmylou covered 'Abraham, Martin and John' to close her set. She and Margo Price (who also played that day) came out later to sing with Prine (I forgot which song though).
3 years ago I saw The Sword at Rose Music Hall here in town. I went in part because one of the guys who works at the drum shop I went to often was in the opening band, Don't Mind Dying. They were pretty good. The Sword didn't do much for me, though, and I ended up leaving early.

IRT zicona1, I could look it up but I can't remember the last show I saw at Memorial Hall. Maybe Alice Cooper with Armoured Saint when he tried his hand a heavy metal...1992?
EDIT;: After careful research the last two shows were: They Might Be Giants 1996 and Natalie Merchant in 1995.
EDIT: EDIT: Alice Cooper was in 1988. The last time I saw the Kinks was in 1988 at Memorial Hall as well. I saw The Cars in 1987.

October 2, 2010
Itâs Saturday night, and on the docket is Broken Social Scene at everyoneâs favourite venue, The Riv! This show was memorable for 2 reasons:
1. It was the rare time where a club show headliner didnât play an encore. The band powered through 21 songs 2. To date, this is my fav BSS show.
BSS was touring on Forgiveness Rock Record, so naturally the performance features plenty of songs from it. âChase Sceneâ is my favorite song on the album, and it sounded great live. Other highlights included Metricâs Jimmy Shaw joining in on âSweetest Kill,â getting âSuperconnectedâ and âAnthemsâŚâ back to back, and The Sea and the Cake (the nightâs openers), playing âThe Colony Roomâ during the main set, with an assist from BSS.

25 years ago on this date I saw Smashing Pumpkins at the hockey arena in STL. This show was originally scheduled for July, but then one of the members of their touring band OD'd and they kicked Jimmy out of the band. So it was the original 3, with Matt Walker from Filter filling in on drums. This was the first show I had driven out of town and gone to by myself, I had bought two tickets and I ended up eating the extra b/c I couldn't find anyone to go with. This was when the band was touring for Mellon Collie, they played a lot of the best songs from it (Porcelina, Eyes of Ruby, Muzzle, XYU, etc), plus the hits from Siamese Dream ('Siva' was the only rep from Gish). I thought the show was excellent, I had a great time by my lonesome. They did multiple encores, for '1979', they invited a few fans to dance on stage - one girl I remember looked so happy to be up there. The final encore was an extended jam with a bit of 'Silverfuck' thrown in, which at the time I thought was boring. I wanted to hear the original. The jam ended with Billy playing solo piano. This night showed me you didn't need friends to have a good time at a show.
12 years ago on this date I was at the first day of Austin City Limits Fest 2009. This day was beautiful, the grass was green all throughout the park and it wasn't too hot. I didn't keep the schedule, it probably turned into a piece of pulp (more on that tomorrow). I think I saw School of Seven Bells, The Walkmen, Daniel Johnston, Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The highlights were Daniel Johnston and Hitchcock, back to back on one of the side stages. Peter Buck from R.E.M. was in Hitchcock's band. The Beastie Boys were supposed to be one of the headliners, but they dropped out and the YYYs replaced them. The YYYs were good, they had these huge inflatable eyeballs on stage that they tossed to the crowd, I had seen David Bowie do something similar in a live show of his on TV. It took a long time to get on the bus and get back downtown, that was the only downside to the day.
5 years ago on this date I saw The Mountain Goats at The Blue Note. This was a solid show, he did 'You Were Cool' solo, that was a highlight.
