21 years ago on this date I saw Moby at the now-defunct American Theater in STL. He was touring for Play, but it was before 'South Side' became a big hit. This show was outstanding. I had seen what Moby was like with a live band at a radio station fest (more on that later this year), he was running around on stage, playing guitar, keyboards, drums, the whole show was mostly one big dance party (with a few quieter moments to catch our breaths). They covered Bad Company's 'Feel Like Makin' Love' and the live versions of 'Honey' and 'Bodyrock' had way more energy than the recorded versions. I spent the night at my Grandparents' place and drove back early the next morning not to miss class, but when I got back it was cold and I had a pair of shorts on, so I skipped class.
12 years ago on this date I was at Day 2 of ACL 2009. Whereas Day 1 was beautiful and sunny, Day 2 was the opposite - it rained all day. The forecast said it might rain, so I packed a poncho and wore my dive boots (you put your fins on over them) to the park. Despite the miserable weather, !!! and Flogging Molly were a lot of fun in the rain. I also watched the end of John Legend's set, where he did 'Green Light' and took his shirt off. I wanted to see Mos Def, but he was late and I don't know if he ever showed as I left. Towards the evening I checked out John Vanderslice, but his music didn't leave an impression on me. Dave Matthews Band was the headliner this night, I watched two songs from them before leaving.
7 years ago on this date I saw Pearl Jam at the hockey arena in STL. The Cards were in the playoffs, before the show started they were playing a radio broadcast of the game in the arena. Eddie Vedder also gave a score update during the show (they ended up winning!). We got a great 3-hour set, they played several songs I had never seen them do before like 'Low Light', 'Footsteps', 'Thin Air', and 'Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns'. There was a woman in the nosebleeds who had a sign that said 'THIS IS MY 100TH SHOW', Eddie pointed it out and asked for a bottle of wine to be delivered to her. Before the show, I got some BBQ at Pappy's, and found free parking in front of the courthouse just a few blocks from the venue. This was the last time I saw the band, if it ends up being the last time I see them, it was a pretty great night.
2 years ago I saw Makaya McCraven at Cafe Berlin here in town. This was part of the Columbia Experimental Music Fest. I'm not much of a jazz fan, but this set was pretty freaking cool. The xylophone player was particularly fun to watch. I think Jeff Parker from Tortoise was in the band as well?

Jeff Parker from Tortoise there was a guitarist in tortoise before parker, but he's an improvement over his predecessor.

on this day in 1997, I saw these acts at the first farm aid to be held at tinley: chris knight, dean miller, mary cutrufello, steve earle with justin earle and the v-roys, beck, willie, billy ray cyrus and the dennis alley wisdom dancers, john fogerty, don johnson introducing the allman brothers, the dave matthews band, mellencamp, and neil young. I left tinley and raced to get to the empty bottle, and missed the two opening acts, but did see all of the headliner, “magnet,” whose drummer was maureen “moe” tucker. www.setlist.fm/setlist/beck/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-43dd7f03.htmlwww.setlist.fm/setlist/dave-matthews-band/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-13d6e559.htmlwww.setlist.fm/setlist/john-fogerty/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-53d98779.htmlwww.setlist.fm/setlist/john-mellencamp/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-43d9877f.htmlwww.setlist.fm/setlist/neil-young/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-63d046eb.htmlwww.setlist.fm/setlist/the-allman-brothers-band/1997/new-world-music-theatre-tinley-park-il-23d644bf.html

on this day in 2011, i saw yukon blonde at beat kitchen. this was definitely a show i expected there to be like 30 people at. it was comfortably full. they were fine, had some good songs and pleasant stage presence.
on this day in 2013, i saw title fight and balance and composure at metro. both of these bands are from sort of near where i grew up. on paper, i'd like both. but this show was awful. balance and composure were one of the most boring emo/hardcore bands i've ever seen. the singer did one of my least favorite singer things by saying "thanks" at the end of every song. not even that, sometimes he said it before the song was even over before anyone had applauded. it really got on my nerves. and title fight was also mostly a bore, though they at least had better songs and a handful of moments where i thought they knew how to play live as a rock band.

4 years ago I saw a pretty good lineup at Subterranean. Japanese Breakfast was the headliner, I think this was my second time seeing them by that point. Don't remember much of the set though, as much as I enjoy their albums, I just am never blown away by them live. Mannequin Pussy was in the middle of the bill, and they were still touring on the first album so that was great. And I guess Spirit of the Beehive opened up the show? Don't remember that set at all, but surprised I saw them back then.
Also 4 years ago yesterday was Explosions in the Sky and Holy Fuck at the Bottle. This was one of the special 25th anniversary shows, and it was excellent. It had been a long time since the last time I saw Holy Fuck before this one. And EITS were great as usual, especially in a room that small.

18 years ago on this date I saw R.E.M. at Madison Square Garden. I wanted to see them again on this tour, and thought I'd make a trip to NYC. The show itself was great, though I confess I was a little angry at the time when they played 'World Leader Pretend' and 'Gardening At Night', as I saw them do those at the last show and wanted to hear different songs. They did 'Don't Go Back to Rockville', though, Mike Mills took center stage to sing it. For the encore, they ran through 'Life and How to Live It', then Michael Stipe grabbed an acoustic guitar and played a bit of Interpol's 'NYC'. He said he loved New York, and was proud to call it his home. After the show, I walked around Times Square a bit until I got tired.
The previous day they played outside the Today show on the plaza. I didn't know this was happening until after I booked the trip. I took a cab down there at 6am and got in line with a bunch of other fans. After about 20 minutes, they let us in where the band was still soundchecking. They did a 3-song set of 'Losing My Religion', 'Bad Day' and 'Get Up'. It was pretty exciting, with the cameras zooming around. Katie Couric talked to the band on stage, but I couldn't hear it that well. Lester Holt chatted us up while we were waiting. Rob Lowe was being interviewed in the studio, he walked by and waved to us. This was a really cool experience.
12 years ago on this date was Day 3 of ACL 2009. The previous day's rain had destroyed the grass and turned a lot of the ground to mud. The sun was out, which made it humid. I saw Rodriguez early on, he looked a bit weak but his band ably picked up the slack. Also watched part of The B-52's. There wasn't much I wanted to see, part of the day I sat in a tent they had set up with bleachers to watch football. Later in the day I caught some of Dirty Projectors, then parked at the main stage for The Dead Weather, followed by Pearl Jam. This was apparently PJ's first time playing Austin since the 90's. They played a set that made the gross day all worthwhile. Ben Harper came out to do 'Red Mosquito' in the first encore, when they played 'Alive' I headed for the exits b/c I was muddy, tired, hungry, and had to piss, so I missed Perry Farrell coming out for a cover of 'Mountain Song' and the 'Rockin' In the Free World' finale. I should've stuck around a few minutes more.
2 years ago on this date I saw Julianna Barwick at the Firestone Baars Chapel for the Columbia Experimental Music Festival. I dutifully stayed for the whole show and applauded at the end, but I just don't get her music, it didn't do much for me.

on this day in 2000, i saw the slackers and the b-3s at the 31st street pub. this was a rare all ages show and the venue always went overboard for those, like covering the entire bar with tarp to really make it clear. the stage here was really small and the slackers were like a 7-piece band, so they were crammed. they played a pretty standard set.
on this day in 2010, i saw teenage fanclub at lincoln hall. i was really disappointed with the setlist. just one song from Bandwagonesque??? but what they did play sounded great. one of my friends who plays guitar but strangely never went to a lot of shows went with me and he was surprisingly into it.
on this day in 2018, i saw the beths at the beat kitchen. they were a nervous bunch at the beginning, but this turned into a pretty good show.
on this day in 2019, i was at hardly strictly bluegrass and saw steve earle, the new pornographers, calexico and iron & wine, robert earl keen, tank & the bangas, hayes carll, and mercury rev & beth orton. mercury rev and beth orton were playing bobbie gentry songs and that was kind of entertaining. robert earl keen was my surprise highlight of the day. the stage where robert plant was playing was a clusterfuck all afternoon. it was terrible trying to get in and out of there. we should've spent more time on the other side of the park avoiding that area. steve earle and the new pornographers were also pretty good.

17 years ago on this date I was at a Vote For Change show at the Fox Theater in STL where I saw Pearl Jam, Death Cab For Cutie, and Bob Roberts. Thanks to the Ten Club, I landed a seat in the 3rd row. The show began with Eddie Vedder doing 'Last Kiss' on acoustic guitar and introducing 'Bob Roberts'. His songs weren't that memorable, but hey, it's Tim Robbins, movie star. He had us all sing 'Happy Birthday' to his girlfriend's answering machine via his cell phone. I remember nothing about Death Cab For Cutie's set. Pearl Jam was great, they swapped a few of their biggest hits like 'Alive' and 'Even Flow' for some deeper cuts. They covered 'Fortunate Son', The Who's 'The Seeker', and Tim joined them on stage to cover X's 'The New World'. I also got one of Mike McCready's guitar picks he tossed to the crowd. Really great night.
14 years ago I saw Elton John at Mizzou Arena here in town. I had never seen him before, my parents and a friend of my Mom's all went together. The show was mostly the hits, which was just fine, because he was a great performer. Some of the reactions my parents had to some of his songs I won't forget.
11 years ago I saw The Mountain Goats for the first time at The Blue Note. I didn't know much about them when they announced the show, I checked out All Hail West Texas and We Shall All Be Healed and I liked what I heard, so I bought a ticket. I was very impressed with the show, John Darnielle seemed to be having a great time on stage. All the songs they played were interesting, I wanted it to go longer than 90 minutes. We got 'The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton' in one of the encores.
4 years ago I saw Moor Mother at Eastside Tavern downtown. She played a short but strong set, just her with a laptop, microphone, and a few samplers behind a table.
2 years ago I saw Mdou Moctar at Cafe Berlin as part of the Columbia Experimental Music Fest. He and his band were really good, I was getting some Prince and Jimi Hendrix vibes at times.

on this day in 2006, i saw the long winters at subterranean. they started with a couple songs from the most recent album and then roderick just kept asking the crowd what the next song should be. that was a little chaotic, but kind of interesting to hear what people were shouting out for. but there's also part of me that thinks they were just amusing the crowd and playing whatever they wanted under the cover of "we heard someone say this." toward the end, roderick said they had time for one more and threw out "ultimatum" or "prom night at hater high." everyone around me yelled out for "hater high" but they went with "ultimatum." the fix was in. around this time i had a bad cough lingering after a brutal illness. it was a very full subterranean and i was trying really hard to not be the annoying cougher.
on this day in 2015, i saw mew and the dodos at metro. i have vague recollections of this show and don't think it was near the top of times i saw mew. but the setlist looks pretty good, so maybe it wasn't so bad and my memory is just trash.
on this day in 2019, i was at hardly strictly bluegrass and saw emmylou harris, mandolin orange, meat puppets, hiss golden messenger, and judy collins. we got there a little later than expected and missed a couple acts earlier in the day. but we found a good spot in the big field and camped out there. i thought judy collins would be a pleasant rarity because i'd never otherwise see her. but she was just a loquacious name-dropper. i left after like 15 minutes to see hiss golden messenger and had no regrets. when i returned, my girlfriend said she'd played some good stuff but kept dropping names in her banter. she didn't know half of the names, but that crowd obviously ate it up. this was the first time i'd seen the meat puppets since like 2013 and they were once again enjoyable. emmylou harris was a delight, but we left a little early to beat the exodus and get dinner with some friends. overall, a pretty good day.

16 years ago on this date I saw The New Pornographers at the now-defunct Mississippi Nights in STL. Destroyer and Kathryn Calder opened, so it was like, everyone was there. This was the first time I had seen the band, and probably my favorite of the times I've seen them. They were touring for Twin Cinema, so they played a lot from that, and Electric Version. I remember thinking Neko was cute (probably wasn't the only one). The band just seemed all loose and lively, it was great. During the show, I yelled out for 'Miss Teen Wordpower' - my favorite song of theirs - and they played it to start the encore! They ended up doing a second encore and ended with 'Jackie'. I didn't know any Destroyer songs at the time, but I remember that Dan Bejar, like, didn't seem to acknowledge the audience at all during his set, just did his songs and left the stage.

on this day in 2006, i saw okkervil river at schubas. i really do not remember much about the music at this show, but i enjoyed okkervil river each time i saw them at schubas. i had a cough variant asthma following a pretty bad illness - getting into wild coughing fits but feeling fine and told by my doctor that i wasn't sick/contagious. the night before at the long winters i had a few fits and tried to cover them up during applause. the same thing was happening this night. the guy in front of me turned around a couple times and my girlfriend apologized on my behalf and assured him that i wasn't carrying ebola or whatever. he then said "yeah, i know. i was standing behind you at the long winters last night."
on this day in 2009, i saw kylie minogue at uic pavilion. this was supposed to be somewhere else, maybe the congress? but apparently the original venue suddenly couldn't accommodate something from her stage show and it was moved a few days beforehand. how that happens is beyond me. so this became a fully GA show. when we arrived, the line stretched a couple blocks. floor was first come first serve and we were within sight of the doors when they ran out of those wristbands. but we ended up with pretty good seats on the first level. this is not the type of show i usually go to. she entered the stage in a chrome skull. there were several costume changes. the choreography was pretty good. i was pleasantly surprised by the different arrangements for a lot of songs. in hindsight after seeing some of her concert films, though, this show was phoned in. still a whole lot of fun, but very planned and not organic.
on this day in 2016, i saw the seratones and evening attraction at the empty bottle. my girlfriend had heard the seratones and liked them. i believe this was a jukely show too. we both enjoyed evening attraction and then seratones just didn't really click live with either of us.

25 years ago on this date I saw Marilyn Manson at The Blue Note. I liked the 'Sweet Dreams' cover, and in those pre-Internet days I had heard stories about his live show, like 'he tears up a bible', etc. He didn't do anything like that this night, but it was a memorable spectacle. This was the night before Antichrist Superstar was released. The show basically had two parts, the first half had Manson dressed up in a back brace with a backdrop of a stained glass topless angel wielding a sword. The second half started with the title track from AS, those 'electric shock' banners came down, and Manson came out dressed in a red suit. I enjoyed the show more than I thought I would.
12 years ago on this date I saw The Decemberists at the Pageant in STL. I had recently gotten in a car accident where I totaled my car, and got a chest contusion. Fortunately, I had bought a seat and not GA, I don't think I would've lasted having to stand all night in my condition. This was my first time seeing the band, and it was when they were playing all of The Hazards of Love. After they played the album, they took a 15 minute break, then came back and played about 8 or 9 more songs, including a cover of Heart's 'Crazy on You'. They also got the audience to do a re-enactment of Charles Lindbergh flying across the Atlantic, with one audience member mimicking an airplane, crowd surfing towards another person on someone's shoulders with their arms raised and hands together (like the Eiffel Tower, get it?). I enjoyed the show, the band sounded really good.
10 years ago on this date I saw St. Vincent at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS. Due to construction on I-70, I had to take a detour where I arrived after the opener had played. St. V had some tech issues right at the start, but after those got smoothed out she sounded great. She played a lot from Strange Mercy and Actor, the only Marry Me song she did was 'Your Lips Are Red' as the encore. She also covered The Pop Group's 'She is Beyond Good and Evil'. Ex-boarder PulpAffliction was at this show, and he and I chatted afterwards.
6 years ago on this date I saw Father John Misty at the Pageant in STL. This was an entertaining show, Mr. Tillman is certainly a showman.

on this day in 2009, i saw a 3-verb show with disappears, follows, and implodes. i don't recall if it was implodes or follows, but one of the openers was really good this night while the other was just ok. disappears was very enjoyable, as usual around this time. i went with the friend who'd raved about disappears after seeing them in the spring but strangely did not go with me to see them over the summer opening for obits.
on this day in 2011, i saw man or astroman and jaill at metro. i thought this was way too big of a venue for this show, but was surprised that it was moderately full. jaill was pretty good. man or astroman put on a spectacle. i don't recall if they were touring with the tesla coil at this point. but i'm pretty sure they had the dot matrix printer for "a simple text file." that always took a long time to set up. the payoff was usually worth it for the novelty.
on this day in 2013, i saw obits and heavy times at the empty bottle. this was one of the first shows i realized how boring rick froberg is with setlists. this show was the album they'd just released out of order sans maybe 2 songs. then they did an encore of one old song. they still sounded awesome.
on this day in 2015, i saw franz ferdinand+sparks at the vic. this was a jukely show. i met up with a bunch of friends who were mostly franz ferdinand fans. i was the biggest sparks fan in the crew that night. but one guy loved the show and then i gave him my recommendations afterward. i was really pleased with the setlist, especially the choices of whose songs to do in addition to the collaborations. this was a very entertaining evening.
