A few good memory days ahead, as 9 years ago today I was at the pre-show day of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012. There was an indoor and outdoor show at Mohawk with Superchunk, Imperial Teen, Mind Spiders at others. clouddead help me remember, which band was it that set off the fireworks inside of the Mohawk? was that 2011 or 2012? Edit: I think that was at this show, it was Wiccans, right? i remember that show and doing a shot with nizzle for his bday

on this day in 1996, I, and the ex who had seen minor threat when she was growing up in miami, and who now lives in scandinavia, went to fireside bowl for whatever, the freeze, and headliner the bollweevils for a $5 cover. The 7” record of the freeze’s performance sells for around $11 these days.
on this day in 1997, I went to the congress for the expo of the extreme for: merle allin, floodgate, cianide, king velveeda, buzzoven, integrity, eyehategod, mentors, emcee ron jeremy, murder junkies, shine with wino, transmetal, fang, and headliner trouble. on this day in 2005, the better half and I saw tributosaurus play the monkees at martyrs.
on this day in 2019, the better half and I saw the knees and ganser at record breakers.

10 years ago today, my wife and I saw Butch Walker at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale. The thing I remember about this show the most is that Florida had not yet banned smoking indoors, and this was the last show I went to where that was still allowed. That was just horrid. The show itself was a good time though, I think he was still touring on The Spade back then.
9 years ago was the first full day of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012. Saw FIDLAR, Dum Dum Girls, Torche, Cursive, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Bob Mould, Against Me!, Santigold, and RUN DMC. The thing I remember most is I think that may have been the first (or one of the first shows) after Laura changed her name with AM! and it was a really great set. RUN DMC was a pretty great time too. I didn't have my kids with me, but I happened to notice that the diaper changing stations were all shaped like skating half pipes, which was hilarious. And that day was the debut of the TACO CANNON as well. What a fest.
That was also the day that Val Kilmer was playing with Black Lips and was being recorded for that movie that came out a few years later.
Went to the Mohawk for another aftershow again after that for FIDLAR and Surfer Blood, and I think some of the DDG offshoot bands like Sisu too.

on this day in 2002, i was at cmj and had quite a night. in hindsight, i planned poorly and my timing was off. i arrived to venues too early or late to see acts i wanted to see. but first, in the afternoon at the conference, i saw the polyphonic spree. this was a really fun set and pretty early on for them. in the evening, i went to brooklyn lyceum because explosions in the sky were headlining. but i only saw the first two acts - nathan salsburg, who's now the curator for the alan lomax archive, and kilowatthours, who are now known as up the empire. they were both fine. i thought the venue was really cool, though. on the way to midtown, i stopped at acme underground expecting to see chris brokaw but ended up seeing helms. i have no recollection of this. and then i went to hammerstein ballroom. simian mobile disco and cassius opened. the chemical brothers headlined and were terrific. that's the show that really got me into them. their light show was great. i closed out the night at an adult swim party where will.i.am dj'd and they were showing the upcoming season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
on this day in 2006, i saw justice at smartbar. they blew up big time between when it was announced and that night, so it was packed and there was a lot of hype. they were a lot of fun. but they didn't have the performance production they eventually would, so there wasn't much to look at and i'm not even sure they were playing live.
on this day in 2013, i saw mannequin men and meat wave at the empty bottle. this was the first time i saw meat wave and i really liked them right away. mannequin men were also a real good time.

25 years ago on this date I saw Gravity Kills at the Blue Note. This was at the height of their popularity, they were doing two nights there. They had two openers, one was called Chainsuck and the other was Local H. This was just before 'Bound For the Floor' became a hit on alt-rock radio. I had never heard of them until that night, but they were awesome, the two of them just rocked the fuck out. Gravity Kills was pretty good, I remember being close to the front and getting pinned up against one of the speakers at one point (I had earplugs in, fortunately). They closed with 'Enough' and the lead singer screamed, "LET'S TEAR THIS PLACE APART!" That did not happen. 11 years ago I saw The Books at Old Rock House in STL. I went to this on a whim, had recently listened to The Way Out and enjoyed it. I had never been there before and I got lost, had to stop and ask for directions (turned out I had passed it a few times and didn't recognize the place). Their show was pretty unique, they had different videos to accompany all the songs they played, it was like watching an AV presentation. They also had a main menu displayed that had all the songs they were playing listed (abbreviated). Towards the end, the cello player said, "this is where we usually leave before the encore, but we've got nowhere to go, and there's three more songs!" Glad I went to this since the band is no more. 10 years ago I saw The War on Drugs at Rose Music Hall here in town. This was just after Slave Ambient was released, I believe. This should be a band I love, but most of the time their songs drag on and start to bore me. The show kind of felt this way, they played 90 minutes and I felt it was longer than that. (I'm more a fan of songs like 'Baby Missiles', catchy and relatively short.) Still, I respect them, and I hope they keep getting more popular so I can brag that I saw them in a dive bar for ten bucks.

They closed with 'Enough' and the lead singer screamed, "LET'S TEAR THIS PLACE APART!" That did not happen. an old friend of mine told a tale of slayer playing the tower theater outside philly where that did happen. apparently, there were removable chairs on the floor level that snapped in/out. for this show, the venue had removed a lot of seating so there was a big pit. but presumably it wasn't big enough. so the crowd, possibly urged on by the band, ripped out more seating and it got tossed around. according to tour schedules, slayer played there in 1995 and then not again until 2014.

This was a pretty light day at FFF Fest 2012. Only saw Red Fang, The Spits, Tanlines, Paul Banks, Wavves and The Sword. But that also left me with plenty of time to stand in line to get a chicken waffle taco!!
I was much happier about the aftershows, I was at Mohawk once again, this time for A Place to Bury Strangers and Black Moth Super Rainbow. Then I walked over to the Parish, and caught up with the crew to watch Liturgy and Black Tusk. This was the infamous show where nature boy somehow fell asleep on the uncomfy wood benches there and got kicked out.

8 years ago on this date I saw My Bloody Valentine at the Aragon. I drove up to Chicago for this, had never seen them before. Nanatod joined me for dinner at an Asian place he recommended. The show was very good, I stood in front of the soundboard for most of it. The 'noise holocaust' during 'You Made Me Realize' was really fucking loud, I was concerned about my ears even though I had plugs in.
5 years ago I saw Protomartyr at Cafe Berlin. I was psyched they were playing a tiny venue here in our town. The band sounded good, though the lead singer just kind of walked back and forth during the entire show while they projected videos on the back wall. Overall I enjoyed it.
4 years ago I saw Slowdive at The Truman in KC. I was surprised they were playing KC on their tour. I'm not a huge fan of the band, but I thought they sounded really good, and I enjoyed it much more than that year they played Pitchfork. Timbo was there too.

I seriously don't remember which of the Asian places that I recommend to visitors this one was. what cuisine? where was this in relation to the aragon? was it lao sze chuan's uptown location? that was most likely. silver seafood? silk road at 19 S. LaSalle (ate there w/ agenthal)? mian? the pho place a bunch of us were at with falco?

Another excellent day at Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2012 today. It was Ume, Fang Island, Bleached, A Place to Bury Strangers, Class Actress, Japandroids, then in a small tent, Titus Andronicus and And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, then Fucked Up. That run from Japandroids to FU was one of my favorite ever. Only bad thing about the Japandroids set was the sun was just about to set, so it was really tough to find a good spot where you weren't being blinded. Titus was awesome as always, since that was still the Monitor tour. Trail of Dead ripped as always, I was pretty close and got to strum one of their guitars at one point. Then Fucked Up were excellent, I was pretty far back, but during one song Damian managed to make his way through most of the crowd and got all the way back by me. I was near the fence they had on the street, and he actually was trying to dismantle it so that more people could get in. That was on the David Comes to Life tour too, so that was an excellent set. I barely stayed for some of Turbonegro to close the night, I was beat and had an early flight the next day.
That was also my first Whataburger day, there was one right by my hotel near the fest. Man I wish they would open one up here.

on this day in 2001, i saw !!!, les savy fav, and the apes at roboto 2. this was in the basement of what appeared to be an old gym. there were lockers piled up in a corner. support pillars were inconveniently placed throughout the room. the ceilings were pretty low. but it was a big space. the apes played first. they were fine. !!! apparently got lost en route and were way late. les savy fav were supposed to headline, but they played second. this was the first time i saw them and they were amazing. tim had wild antics, but i was really impressed with how good they sounded. this was a super tight set. they played a lot and then tim said "we don't know anymore songs." during their last one, i turned around and saw !!! rolling gear in. the drummer set up first and went right into a beat. as other band members soundchecked, they jammed with whoever was ready to go. once everyone was ready, they segued right into the first song. they also turned out all of the lights except the ones on the side that they couldn't find switches for. oddly, a lot of people in the crowd had little flashlights on their keychains so we swung those around. at this time, they only had the debut album, which has 7 songs on it. my friend and maybe others shouted out for "intensify" and nic kept saying "we don't know that one." how do you not know one of the 7 songs you've released?? but they were really fun. as soon as they finished, i ran out to my car and turned on the radio to hear "and the arizona diamondbacks are world champions!" when i got home, a girl i liked told me she'd recorded the extra innings because she knew i was at a show and wouldn't've been able to watch the game.
on this day in 2011, i was at fun fun fun fest and saw passion pit, danzig, murder city devils, spank rock, okkervil river, thee oh sees, ty segall, picture plane, the thermals, heartless bastards, ocote soul sounds, from ashes rise, doomriders, and mind spiders. this was the infamous french onion soup danzig show. i'm sure other bands had memorable sets and i recall enjoying lots of this day, but that danzig fiasco was something, especially the next day once all was revealed. i think i watched 20 minutes before catching some passion pit to close out the fest. that evening i saw the thermals and lemuria at an aftershow. i nodded off while sitting down during whoever opened. the thermals were fun, though.

On November 4, 2000, I saw They Might Be Giants at the Recher (pronounced wrecker) Theatre in Towson, MD. The song "Towson" on TMBG's Venue Songs album is dedicated to this venue. The opening act was a pre-viral-video, pre-"Here It Goes Again" OK Go.

12 years ago on this date I saw Neko Case at the Pageant in STL. I had seen her at Lolla that summer, but she was touring for Middle Cyclone and I love that record, so I wanted to see her at her own show. Terrific show, she and Kelly Hogan were very talkative and entertaining between songs - I remember they mentioned a Slayer lyric about "dead bodies dying" that they thought was funny. Was very happy they did 'Prison Girls', as they didn't play it at Lolla. I've been reluctant to see her again, in part because I don't think this show could be topped.
6 years ago I was in Austin for Fun Fun Fun Fest and I went to a pre-fest show with a bunch of boarders, but I don't remember the name of the venue. It was outside, and the lineup was Cult Leader, Creepoid, and Nothing. I don't remember much about the music either, except being disappointed by Nothing. I'm sure it was a good time.

In 2010 today, I was at Fun Fun Fun fest... But I didn't put who I was seeing on my fb post, and I wasn't keeping a copy of my concert list at that point, so I have no idea who I saw which day : (
Pretty sure though that the first band I saw was Future Islands though. I was pretty sleep deprived (the day before I flew with my wife and kids to Florida, then flew to Austin that morning for the fest), but still got there pretty early for them. There was not a big crowd, so Sam was especially able to make eye contact with pretty much everyone watching their set. So that was a great start.

on this day in 2004, i saw the futureheads at transit. i think they'd just put out their first album and there was quite a bit of hype behind them. they were entertaining and the crowd was super into it. but there was just something about them that i wasn't overly wild about. i could never put my finger on it with them.
on this day in 2011, i was at fun fun fun fest and saw spoon, the damned, hot snakes, cave in, m83, cold cave, paint it black, turquoise jeep, joy formidable, and tinariwen. i ran into many friends throughout the day and had a really good time. m83, hot snakes, the damned, and spoon were highlights, as i recall. in the evening, i saw boris, deafheaven, and russian circles at red 7 with several boarders. russian circles sounded awesome. the other bands were good too.

on this day in 2009, i saw a basement jaxx dj set and modeselektor at the congress. i had a very bad cold and really should not have gone to this show. but this was also around the peak of my basement jaxx fandom and i really wanted to hear them. i had a pleasant time. the friend i went with is not really into this music, but he was curious. i think he enjoyed it too.
on this day in 2011, i wrapped up fun fun fun fest with slayer, boris, hum, architecture in helsinki, kid dynamite, eyehategod, zero boys, nobunny, ceremony, and davila 666. this was a really good day. i did skip the ted leo set that had a danzig parody. but at that time i absolutely had to see kid dynamite. i'd been super into them in college and hadn't seen them. this set was filmed for the terrence malick movie. ryan gosling was acting as a security guard with a bandana over his face. but once he was recognized, all of the crowdsurfers guided themselves toward him for a high-five and he eventually broke character. so that footage was completely unusable.
on this day in 2013, i saw sparks at lincoln hall. this was a really fun evening and they played a long time.
on this day in 2016, i saw hiss golden messenger and tift merritt at old town school of folk music. i didn't really know hiss then. i was there to see tift merritt. she was terrific. i ran into a few friends who'd completely stopped going to shows a couple years earlier. this was a rare night out for them. i actually don't think i've seen them since either. this was a really good first time seeing hiss live, but i didn't know anyone of the songs and my girlfriend was sick at home so i left a little early.

6 years ago on this date I was in Austin for the first full day of Fun Fun Fun Fest in 2015. I saw Eugene Mirman, Dwarves (20 minute set!), Viet Cong, Peaches, Cheap Trick, Chvrches, and Skinny Puppy at an aftershow. This was a good day, despite it being cloudy and a bit rainy. Peaches' set was a highlight, she had two dancers who dressed up as vaginas for one song, and simulated sex in another one. An inflatable translucent penis protruded from the stage for another song. At the end, she did 'Fuck the Pain Away', and sprayed champagne. I thought it was all hilarious and a lot of fun. I had never seen Cheap Trick, they played 'I Want You to Want Me' and 'Surrender', so I was happy. Chvrches were good as well, I was glad they played 'Lies' as that was the song that got me into them. I didn't know any Skinny Puppy songs, but their aftershow at the ACL Live venue didn't do much for me.

24 years ago on this date I saw Veruca Salt at the Blue Note with my friend Tara. This is one of the best shows I've seen at that venue, it was at the height of my fandom with the band. During the bridge of 'Venus Man Trap', Louise crowdsurfed and some guy said something vulgar, she got angry and said, "you fuck me in the ass I'll punch you in the face! Get this guy out of here, he's embarrassing Columbia!" (I don't know if he was removed or not). I had lost my earplugs and stuffed some cotton in my ears as a substitute, this did not work very well. After the show, we waited around to see if we could meet the band, Steve (the bass player) and Stacy (the drummer) came out to sign stuff and chat, but Nina and Louise never materialized. Figdish and Triplefastaction opened, but I don't remember anything about their sets, except that Scott from Local H was playing in one of them.
13 years ago on this date I saw Wolf Parade at the same venue. This show was pretty good, though I remember Spencer Krug had on what looked like a golf shirt. I think they did the 10-minute 'Kissing the Beehive' at the end and I was like, "is this song over yet?"
12 years ago on this date I saw Robert Earl Keen, Todd Snider, and Bruce Robison at the same venue. I went mainly for Snider, whose work I had recently gotten into. They were all onstage together, and just took turns at playing their own songs. It was enjoyable, though I'm not a huge fan of that kind of music.
7 years ago I was in Austin for the first full day of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2014, where I saw Judas Priest, Death From Above 1979, Blood Brothers, John Waters, Neil Hamburger, Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, and Peelander-Z. I remember there were incredibly long lines for people to pick up their wristbands, some of them didn't get in until late afternoon. I'm glad I decided to pick mine up the day before. John Waters and Judas Priest were my favorites of the day, though Neil Hamburger made me really LOL a couple of times. Peelander-Z had the taco cannon, I almost caught one. I went to an aftershow at The Belmont outside, it was Courtney Barnett. She and her band really impressed me, they rocked harder than I expected. What a great way to end the day.
6 years ago I was at Fun Fun Fun Fest where I saw The Charlatans UK, Fucked Up, Archers of Loaf, Ride, Jane's Addiction and a bit of Wu-Tang Clan. Archers of Loaf were better than I expected. Ride was good too, but I wanted them to be louder. Jane's was playing all of Ritual De Lo Habitual, I watched them up to after 'Been Caught Stealing' and then went to see a bit of Wu-Tang (GZA and RZA I know were present, not sure who else was there). I went to an aftershow at Cheer Up Charlie's with a few boarders, where I saw Growlers and TogetherPangea. This show was indoors, and it looked like a summer camp building from the inside. Both bands were fine, I don't remember a lot, except it being really packed in there.
