six letters in the dude's last name, not five. And the cafe at 1408 W. Diversey that u6crash played at in October, 2010, was called Fritz Pastry.

on this day in 1997, i saw the dance hall crashers, mxpx, and weston at the trocadero in philly. this was my sister's first "concert." she was 11. she'd heard me playing DHC over the summer and loved them, for some reason. it is the only show we've been to together. i am still a little surprised that my parents let me take her, but she is the favorite. we had a really good time and sang along to just about everything.
on this day in 2003, i saw american analog set, lucero, the album leaf, and appleseed cast at mercury lounge. i used to put on the album leaf's first couple albums as i fell asleep. they were very calming. because i'm an idiot, i did not realize that wouldn't really make for a good performance. lucero was very good that night. american analog set was fine. as i was walking through the bar between bands, there was a girl sitting on the floor with her back to the wall. mercury lounge has a rather narrow walkway there, so she was obstructing everyone's path. when i walked back through the bar several minutes later, she was surrounded by paramedics and there was an ambulance out front. someone told me they thought she'd overdosed.
on this day in 2008, i saw secret machines and the dears at metro. i wasn't in a great headspace for this show and don't have fond memories of it. years later, i was told that i apparently got in an argument with an acquaintance afterward because they loved it and wouldn't accept that i just didn't enjoy it.
on this day in 2011, i saw davila 666, barreracudas, and swimsuit addition at the empty bottle. this was a very enjoyable evening. all of the bands were in good form and the crowd was pretty into it.
on this day in 2015, i saw cactus blossoms at old town school of folk music. this was the first time i saw a show at the small venue across the street from the regular venue. this was also one of the few old town school jukely shows. cactus blossoms had a big everly brothers vibe going and that was pleasant enough for a jukely show.
on this day in 2017, i saw hiss golden messenger at lincoln hall. i had a blast at this show. the band sounded great and the setlist was full of songs i wanted to hear. the only downside is my girlfriend decided at the last minute that she didn't want to go, even though we'd been listening to a lot of hiss and i thought we were both looking forward to the show.

15 years ago on this date I saw Pet Shop Boys at the Pageant in STL. This show was a lot of fun. Neil Tennant mentioned that this was their first time in STL ever. I liked how they moved pieces of the set around for different songs. They played pretty much everything I wanted to hear, and ended with 'It's A Sin' and 'Go West'. Really glad I got to see this, as they haven't been back to MO since then.
8 years ago on this date I saw Desaparecidos at the same venue. I remember that the Cards were in the playoffs, and that night the game was at Busch Stadium. As a result of that - and possibly b/c they booked too big a venue - the attendance was sparse, I have never seen the Pageant so empty. Still, it was a good show and the band played well. They covered The Clash's 'Spanish Bombs', which is my favorite Clash song, so that was a highlight.

12 years ago on this date I saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the hockey arena in STL. This was during a run of dates where they were playing certain albums in full, this night they did Born to Run. They started the show with a few songs before going into the album, including 'Seeds', a kickass song that never made it on any of their studio albums. The rest of the show after they played the album had some interesting moments. Someone made a big sign saying 'PLAY SOLO PIANO', he obliged with 'For You'. Another sign request was for 'Roll Over Beethoven', so they covered that. A small kid was brought up onstage to sing part of 'Waiting on a Sunny Day', that got smiles from everyone. While this show wasn't up there with the one I saw at the same place in 2008, it was still pretty great.

this was a good show. catfish haven also opened. i was just left of the soundboard with a couple friends. the previous year i'd seen the hold steady at the old bottom lounge with like 100 people. and now they were playing a very full metro. i was glad for them. they were entertaining. for some reason, i thought metro had a midnight curfew for 18+ shows and was ready to jet once they finished whatever song took them up to midnight. but then they kept going, and going. so i stuck around. no regrets, except a little sleep. the following year also in late october, they again played metro and that was made into a live album. on this day in 2010, i saw gary numan at metro. he started with The Pleasure Principle but out of order, which was a pleasant surprise in a time when album sets were becoming a bore. and then he played another set from the rest of his career. he sounded good. on this day in 2011, i saw kvelertak, skeletonwitch, and zoroaster at the bottle. kvelertak and skeletonwitch were great. i'd been going to the bottle regularly for 6 years at this point and this was the wildest pit i'd seen up until then. staff had their hands full. this show may also hold some record for most merch in smallest venue. they had like stadium-sized band merch tables.

2 years ago on this date I saw Screaming Females at Cafe Berlin here in town. This is a band I feel I should like more than I do, but they only have a few songs I enjoy. They ran through an hour's worth of material and sounded good, though it didn't really make me like them more or less. I hope this venue starts booking shows again next year - right now they're just a restaurant - because I miss getting to see cool bands like this here in town.

on this day in 2006, I saw sean na na and headliner the hold steady at metro. catfish haven also opened. I don't remember this, but I probably intentionally skipped catfish haven and forgot they were on the bill, because I had recently seen them at a street festival, maybe wicker park fest?

25 years ago on this date I saw Hootie and the Blowfish, with They Might Be Giants opening, at the Hearnes Center here in town. I liked the Hootie radio hits at the time, and the venue was a short walk from my dorm, so I thought I'd check it out. I enjoyed the show, but not too long ago I was talking with a co-worker who was at that same show, and said she hated it, because "they were drunk". I dunno, they did start one song and stopped it, saying they'd play it later. Regardless, there are very few songs by them I still enjoy. They ended with a cover of The Doobie Brothers' 'Long Train Runnin''. I knew little of TMBG's music, but their opening set was very good. A portion of the crowd left after their set.
17 years ago on this date I saw Bob Dylan at the same venue. My ticket was around $30 and close to the floor, in the back. The show was pretty good, I wasn't expecting the arrangements of the songs to be different, they did an almost unrecognizable 'The Times They Are A-Changin' and when Dylan sang the title phrase, the audience cheered. They did 'Like A Rolling Stone' in the encore, but it was an abridged version - just a couple of verses and the chorus. But then they finished with a great version of 'All Along the Watchtower'.

on this day in 2006, i saw the pet shop boys at the chicago theatre. en route on the red line, my girlfriend and i made mini-bets about who on our train would get off at state/lake to go to the show. the only ones that i was absolutely sure about were the two bearded men wearing chaps and leather vests. they ended up sitting in the next section over from us. also amusing was a family (parents, two adolescent sons) across the aisle from us all dressed up and then a man in a full-body pig costume sat next to them. the kids were kind of mortified. this show started with two people jumping out of the set design. the crowd started to cheer and i thought neil and chris were very spry for their 50s, but it wasn't them. it was just two dancers. and then there were two more dancers. and then neil and chris simply walked out behind them. lots of set changes, as zircona1 mentioned above. good setlist, good choreography. we had a fun time. i probably don't need to see them again, though. on this day in 2010, i saw mayer hawthorne at subterranean. this was supposed to be at park west but was moved to subterranean. i have no idea why because it was way packed. i liked his first album and was really hoping he'd be great live. he was fine, but i wasn't blown away. on this day in 2012, i saw metz and radar eyes at the bottle. the friends i go to many garage rock shows with had seen metz before and loved them. i went on the hype and thought the show was fine, but there's just something about metz that doesn't hit me like with my friends. on this day in 2014, i saw nude beach and the sueves at subterranean. i really liked nude beach's first two albums, but the third one (which they were touring in support of) was a double album that dragged. who really needs 70 minutes of garage rock/punk on one album? they should've cut the fat and made it a great half-hour record. but at least they had the common sense to do that live and mostly played the much better songs. my strongest memory of this show is that the singer had a multi-necked guitar that he only played for a few songs. i couldn't wrap my head around a band at their level having such an expensive piece of equipment and only using it sparingly.

on either this day, the next day, or the next day in 1987, I chaperoned my baby sister and her gal pal to the rosemizon for the bodeans and headliner u2. I care so little about these two bands, I have not even bothered to call my sis to look up which of the three shows we attended.
on this day in 1989, I saw srv and double trouble, headliner jeff beck w/ terry bozzio and tony hymas, and then srv joining beck for the encore of going down at the uic pavilion.
on this day in 2006, the better half and I saw ad astra per aspera at permanent records.

On this date in 2003, I saw Marilyn Manson at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. This was the Grotesk Burlesk tour, and I think I saw them twice, once in DC and once in Philadelphia. This was the beginning of the decline for MM; their previous tour had been arenas and by '03 they were back to playing large clubs. At one point they had a giant inflatable Mickey Mouse on stage. The opening band was called S.T.U.N. and they were godawful. They are from LA and apparently the singer is Alicia Silverstone's husband? I did not know this at the time.

4 years ago on this date I saw Arcade Fire at the Silverstein Center in Independence, MO. I originally was not planning on going to this, but a few days before the show Timbo messaged me saying he had won a few tickets in a contest, and asked if I wanted one of the extras. Sure! The show was in the round, and the band members had boxing announcer-like intros coming out which was kind of corny/funny. Even though Everything Now was a disappointment, the songs from it went down better live (the visuals helped too). 'Creature Comfort' is a banger that fit in well with 'Reflektor' and 'Sprawl II' in that cluster of songs the band did late in the show. They seemed to pick one deep cut from one of their past albums to play, we got 'Rococo'. I would not have picked that one. Overall it was a great show.

5 years ago on this date I saw Shellac at the Firebird in STL. The Firebird is (was?) one of my favorite venues, and with Shellac, a band who I had wanted to see in MO for a long time, this was close to wish fulfillment. I had driven to Chicago to see them in March earlier that year, but they only played an hour as a co-headliner with Mono. This night, they played 90+ minutes and sounded powerful - when they hit, they hit hard. They do q+a in between songs, the most interesting question someone asked was where the cover photo for Dude Incredible came from (Steve said it was an AP photo he happened upon and said, "I'll have that.") I shook Steve's hand after the show, and thanked him for coming to Missouri. He replied, "we enjoyed it."

4 years ago was one of my favorite double show nights. First was the free set by The National at House of Vans. This was a pretty great set as usual, and they didn’t really cut corners even though it was a free show.
Right after they were done, I walked over the to the United Center, and bought a ticket there for Arcade Fire. Like zircona said, this was on the Everything Now tour, which I was one of the few people who enjoyed it, so I was pretty happy with the set. They still made it a fun set, and the in-the-round design was a great way to see them

Finally got some concerts to talk about and of course they've already been covered in here. I guess I'll add that following the Bob Dylan show Game 7 of the World Series was on and it remains the only time I've ever left my card in a bar overnight.

25 years ago on this date I saw Better Than Ezra at the Blue Note. They came out dressed as Devo, did a small medley of Devo songs, and then launched into 'Good'. I thought the show was great, but I don't listen to them anymore. I was a freshman at Mizzou, and had taken a math test just before going to the show. I think I got a D or an F on it.
23 years ago on this date I saw Insane Clown Posse and Gwar at the now-defunct American Theater in STL. I had gotten my brother two tickets for his birthday. He couldn't find anyone to go with him, so I wound up going too. He painted his face and everything. I sat in the balcony. I thought Gwar's stage show was better than their music - I remember they dismembered Marilyn Manson and Princess Diana. ICP was fine, they had what looked like a stone well center stage filled with Faygo two liters that they'd occasionally spray on the crowd. My brother enjoyed it, though he said it was really crowded on the floor.
12 years ago on this date I saw Kelly Clarkson at the Family Arena in St. Charles. I had nothing to do that night, so I thought I'd check it out. My seat was in the back of the arena. During the second opening act, security came and upgraded my seat to I think the 8th row. Sweet! Kelly and her band sounded really good. For the encore, 'Thriller' played over the PA and they all came out in various costumes. Kelly had a huge Stewie (from Family Guy) costume on. They covered 'Seven Nation Army' and ended with 'My Life Would Suck Without You'. Fun show!
7 years ago on this date I saw Reigning Sound at the Record Bar in KC. Because there were 2 opening bands (or other unknown reasons), Reigning Sound only got a 45-minute set. Booooo. They sounded good though, and I chatted with Greg (the lead singer) after the show. I remember one couple at the show was dressed as Mulder and Scully.

A few good memory days ahead, as 9 years ago today I was at the pre-show day of Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012. There was an indoor and outdoor show at Mohawk with Superchunk, Imperial Teen, Mind Spiders at others. clouddead help me remember, which band was it that set off the fireworks inside of the Mohawk? was that 2011 or 2012? Edit: I think that was at this show, it was Wiccans, right?

on this day in 2002, i was at cmj and saw a few shows. in the afternoon at the conference, i saw division of laura lee in a ballroom at the hilton. they had a pretty good debut album and a reputation for being great live. but, you know, this was at like 2pm in a hilton so probably not ideal conditions. but i recall they sounded fine. in the evening, i made my only visit to cbgb and am honestly not quite sure who i saw. i think they were called all night. they only ever had one album. the drummer is now in red fang. i was really just there for the venue. then i headed to northsix (now music hall of williamsburg) to see common rider, but i missed them and ended up seeing shiner and oxes. the latter had absolute disdain for the music they played, but put on entertaining shows. one of the guitar players walked into the crowd and then out onto the street (from what i could see) before returning a song or two later. then i saw danielson famile and moldy peaches at irving plaza. both bands were very good. this had to have been the height of moldy peaches. chris barron joined them for a cover of "two princes" to close out the night.
on this day in 2003, i saw don caballero, the modey lemon, creta bourzia, and wesafari at carnegie mellon university. for some reason, constantines opened the show and we completely missed them. they were loading up as we walked over. i was really annoyed because i'd wanted to get there early for them. modey lemon were fun, as usual. don cab had a reputation because you never knew what damon che would do. he was known to be a bit erratic. i don't think there were any wild antics at this show, though.
on this day in 2017, i was at the obama foundation event at wintrust and saw chance the rapper, the national, brandi carlile, nas, gloria estefan, and andra day. it was pouring outside while waiting in line. my girlfriend was running way late. i got in on the last row of the floor seats. the woman next to me was also waiting for a latecomer. we bartered and i got her wristband for my girlfriend while she went into the seats to sit with her friend who also didn't get in on the floor. this was a fun evening.
