Spent the morning researching the guys most likely to be up for consideration in the Veterans Committee Golden Days ballot (1950-69). Here are my takes - and who do you got?
Dick Allen - Yes, should have been in a long time ago, it's an absolute shame that he passed before his enshrinement. Dude was a bad-ass, has incredible numbers, and dealt with an unbelievable amount of racist shit during his peak. Minnie Miñoso - Yes, another guy who should've been in ages ago. Great numbers, if not slightly below an auto-induction threshold. But also an icon of the game, a Cuban legend, and the first black Latino player in the MLB. Someone who fans of baseball history would be surprised hadn't gotten his due yet. Jim Kaat - No, but it's super borderline. He played for 25 years and compiled a ton of eye-popping counting stats, but he was only a 3-time all star and got Cy votes once. That said, he somehow won 16 GGs? Not sure how much pitching defensive awards should factor into a HOF case, but that is interesting. He's close, and was clearly very good for a very long time. I'd vote no, but it's not like he's Harold Baines or something. Tony Oliva - No, he was a star, but his peak was, sadly, too short. If he had a couple more years of dominance before his knee injury then he'd be in already. That said, he was an icon of his era so an induction, again, wouldn't be egregious. Maury Wills - No, I love speedster players - and Maury was one of the best of them. But he also got caught stealing a shitload and finished with a career OPS+ of 88. Even in his best seasons he was an above average bat at best. He's a cool story in baseball history, but not someone I'd vote for the Hall.

I agree with you on all 5. It's weird that Reinsdorf was able to get Baines inducted but not Minoso. Minnie is more deserving IMO.

When I was coaching up at Mather, one of our pitchers was the grandson of one of Minnie Miñoso's friends. Minnie stopped by one game as a favor just to watch the kid pitch, give him a few pointers, and be on his way.
He ended up staying for the entire game and talked to our team afterwards for like 30 minutes. Told amazing stories about when he first came to the US and and about being the first black player on the Sox. Mixed in some hitting instruction and answered a bunch of questions.
Dude just absolutely loved baseball. He died less than a year later. He should have been in the HOF a long time ago

Sounds like Springer is signing with Toronto. 6/150. Might be the biggest deal handed out this off-season. Edit: What clouddead said

Insane rumor spreading on Sox Internet that they're working on a trade with the Brewers. Madrigal plus guys for Corbin Burnes.

Insane rumor spreading on Sox Internet that they're working on a trade with the Brewers. Madrigal plus guys for Corbin Burnes. I saw that, I think it's BS but who knows? In a surprise development the Astros re-signed Michael Brantley to another 2/32 deal (identical to his last contract with them). Reports earlier today had him joining Springer in Toronto.

Any team could have claimed Hand for $10M at the beginning of the off-season.

Again one of those deals that will likely include deferred money.

Spotrac is reporting it's a straight $10.5M deal. No incentives, options or deferrals. Washington (and every other team vying for his services) simply underestimated his market. Including the $1M buyout he received from Cleveland it worked out well for Hand, good for him.

Including the $1M buyout he received from Cleveland it worked out well for Hand, good for him. Good old Heyman is reporting that $5 million is deferred with a ton of incentives. I think the Sportrac reporting was premature.

Man that's a monster deal. Didn't think he'd get a 5th year. McCann just got 4/40 for his age 31-34 seasons. Grandal got 4/73 for his age 31-34 seasons. Realmuto gets 5/115 for his age 30-34 seasons. Loved the Grandal signing at the time and it still looks extremely reasonable.

Yeah the JTR deal makes the Grandal deal look like a bargain. Bauer & Ozuna are the only top 5 FAs left now.

Andrelton Simmons to the Twins, Tommy La Stella to the Giants, Freddy Galvis to the Orioles and we're officially cooking with gas.
