in reply to monastery's post a couple of posts up:
because of a winter storm, cecil taylor and his band's show at orchestra hall in chicago became a solo cecil show to the delight of most, if not all of the audience around me. another time, ornette also played orchestra hall with denardo and others in his band, although I remember the cecil taylor show better. pharoah sanders used to play joe segal's jazz showcase at least one week every yr, I think that is where I saw him and his quartet? quintet? once. was still in elementary school when albert ayler died, so he was never trapper kept.
edit: taylor was febuary 2000, coleman was 2003.

I wanna also throw a recommendation out to Asher Gamedze's recent project Dialectic Soul, one of my favorite 2020 releases. It runs the gamut from free improv to cosmic jams and spiritual ballads. Really exciting, beautiful, excellent stuff.

This is awesome - how was the Cecil show? I listened to The World of Cecil Taylor on my commute home today and loved it. "Air" was breathtaking:

I am not conversant enough in jazz to know, but people were losing their shit at orchestra hall from it, as much as someone can lose their shit in the stead surroundings of orchestra hall. he played for a long time without a break, more than people had expected, but it might not have been much more than an hour.

Have we talked about Dexter Gordon in here yet? Cuz Dexter Gordon is also good. Recommend Sophisticated Giant and The Squirrel.

it's pretty far beyond jazz and into her new age period, but the world spirituality classics comp of music she made in her ashram is so good.
universal consciousness is great too.

Have listened to Pharoah Sanders' Karma every morning since Saturday. Also started digging into Donald Byrd's funk period today - with good returns.

Fucked around and listened to this three times in a row this morning. I've liked Miles records before, but this is the first I've heard that I immediately loved. Still have a lot of his discog to get to (On the Corner, Jack Johnson, Nefertiti, Sorcerer), but I'm gonna let this one marinate a little while longer.

spent most of my weekend with cal tjader who i want to throw a spotlight on today:
digging through verve artists, and how could this album cover/title not catch my eye? by the time i was finished playing it through, id sought the record out on discogs and its on the way. tjader is a tasteful player who seems to find his place right in the pocket; he has a reserved style that helps his flourishes pop, and never impart listening fatigue (which is something i struggle w/ on certain byrd records, albeit the trumpet is naturally a little more harsh than the vibraphone).
i know this is hardly the sales pitch he deserves, but its almost like elevator music that i really, really wanted to keep listening to. i hear a ton of his influence in david holmes' music - you can shut your eyes and see danny ocean watching the fountain at the bellagio. i wonder if tjader would roll in his grave if he could hear someone comparing his music to the score of a buddy heist movie.
anyway, i was able to find some additional cal tjader on a vinyl excursion, and also picked up:
tina brooks - true blue wynton kelly trio - undiluted sam rivers - contours

Been on this one a ton this week, especially opening track "India" - it's a stunner. Elvin Jones is just in complete command, plus Eric Dolphy pops up for a solo.

Some 2021 jazz that's also been rattling around my brain today. Got turned on to this by Stereogum's Ugly Beauty column. They're a Swedish trio led by saxophonist Mats Gustaffson, but this record features all sorts of instrumentation. It swirls like free jazz but grooves with low brass like the London scene. It's psychedelic, noise-inflected, and occasionally even meditative. Really cool stuff!

Mats Gustaffson's name sounds really familiar, but I'm not sure why. It seems like he's worked with Colin Stetson in the past, so maybe that's it?
