I've been reading Space Is The Place and listening to at least 2-3 hours of Sun Ra every day since last Monday. [Interstellar Low Ways and Nubians of Plutonia have been my favorite finds so far. Gonna drop a massive Sun Ra playlist here as soon as I'm done!

the shop unfortunately sold out of both the dexter gordon and andrew hill tone poet releases from last week - she said people have been calling specifically to hold records from that series. guess I need to work on my game there.
was still able to cop a pressing of donald byrd - a new perspective, which I have been trying to find in stores for...6 years now.

Never heard of this guy before today, but I'm a fan. I was looking for a Bobbi Humphrey record (Blacks and Blues, killer flute player) and accidentally went too far and hit the Js. I hadn't heard of him either, but I've got Gene Russell's debut on Black Jazz and after reading about him starting the label, told myself I'd keep an eye out for other releases. This was a very successful blind buy. Still on the lookout for the Bobbi Humphrey.

Gonna drop a massive Sun Ra playlist here as soon as I'm done! Finished the book on my morning commute - it was excellent! Open to any and all jazz reading any of y'all have. I've finished up that playlist, it was tough cutting it down but I wanted a neat 30 songs, so here we are. Save for the intro, it's chronological to the best of my ability - Sun Ra's releases are notoriously hard to pin down, since cuts could come from booked recording sessions or from any of his constantly recorded marathon practice sessions. Check it out! Honestly, I think this could serve as a good primer to Sun Ra's comsoverse, if you're so inclined.... But other great entry points include: - Marshall Allen Presents Sun Ra and His Arkestra: This is a career-spanning comp from the saxophonist and longtime Arkestra member. It's a great sampling of his styles and there's pretty heavy overlap b/w this and my playlist. I listened to this a shitload while reading. As for his proper albums...
- Jazz In Silhouette: If you like hard bop - start here
- Lanquidity: If you want a funk groove - try this (and "UFO" from On Jupiter)
- Sleeping Beauty: If you want a gorgeous 2:00am record - try this (it features
the best my favorite Sun Ra track, "Springtime Again") - Strange Celestial Road: If you want a mix of weird 'out there' shit and accessible grooves - this may be my favorite Sun Ra album, discovering it has been a treasure.
- The Nubians of Plutonia: Probably my second favorite Ra record - it also mixes cosmic music with dense rhythms, with a more rough, lived-in sound.
- The Heliocentric Worlds Of Sun Ra: If you want to dive right into the universe's chaos and find your place in it - by all means, go right ahead.
Other incredible albums include: Interstellar Low Ways, Secrets of the Sun, and Angels and Demons At Play. I've put my fave cuts on the playlist, but if you hear something you like, def check out the rest of the record. You may not like it all - in fact, you may not like it at all. But you just may find yourself inexplicably drawn back to it again and again, writing a long post after reading a 400 page book...

Took a few weeks off jazz, but I'm back in full force this week. Been absolutely obsessed with this one, as I work my way through Coltrane's earlier albums. Listened to it, I think, four times yesterday, twice the day before, and again today. I don't have the hubris yet to think I can rank Coltrane albums, but this is near the top of my personal favorites (perhaps, only below Meditations[/i).

Oh yea, and I listened to this twice yesterday too. Just otherworldly, groovy shit. The first track "Soul Vibrations" gave me one of those "You can do that?" music moments. Excited to hear more of her stuff today!

HBD to the Duke - can confirm that this groove FUCKS
Anyone here got a favorite Ellington piece? Pretty basic, but I'm partial to "Take the A Train" and the Newport 1956 cut of "Diminuendo in Blue."

Trying to start a new tradition where every Sunday I flip through the jazz records at my local store (Record City) and buy at least one album that intrigues me. Today my inaugural choice was Stanley Clarke's self-titled. Cover is cool as hell, Clarke's obviously awesome, and Tony Williams is on drums! Gonna bake some biscotti now and give this a spin.

Update: WOW this record was awesome - an extremely heavy, incredibly heady fusion record. Glad I went with my instincts and picked this up. Would recommend!

Took a few months off of heavy jazz listening but am coming back into the fold over the last couple weeks. Revisiting Bird's Savoy sessions, Dexter Gordon's Go, and spent a nice afternoon train ride with This Is Our Music yesterday. I'm reading Art Taylor's Notes and Tones now, a series of one-on-one interviews conducted with various heavy-hitters of 60s jazz. Just read his chat with Randy Weston and put on this record, and goddamn. I was blown away. It's basically just piano, bass, and drums (but given all the hand drums throughout, it's not strictly a trio recording), and this thing is alive. Weston integrated African rhythms into his music, and the combination here is perfect. His playing is cracking with energy when needed - and sparse, spaced, and complementary just as often. Would recommend!

symbionese had seen more concerts than I have, and he had seen a lot of very, very special shows, but I was able to lord it over him the one time he admitted he never saw Miles Davis in concert, while I had seen him at the chicago theater on one of his last tours.
in reply to monastery...
but tony williams was long gone from miles' group when I finally got around to checking miles out.
