One of the best albums I've heard in ages. Like, one of those listens where you're just smiling cuz you can't believe how good this shit you're hearing is. Time to go down the Abdullah Ibrahim / Cape Jazz rabbithole!

Larry Young, Pharoah Sanders, James 'Blood' Ulmer & co. on some deeply outer space shit. It really gets cookin' with the third track, "Hello Your Quietness," and the rest is the most intergalactic music I've heard this side of Sun Ra.

a Jimmy Smith story: I don't remember what year exactly this was, but a couple of years before he died, Jimmy Smith was to be the Sunday headliner or right before the Sunday headliner for the Chicago Jazz Festival when it was still at the Petrillo music shell in Grant Park. The fest had worked its way through the preliminary acts, and the stagehands were setting up the organ that Jimmy Smith was to play and the other instruments. Something didn't t seem right to them, and Jimmy walked out, and wasn't happy with the way the organ was going to sound, so he cancelled the performance then and there. He never played the festival again after that.

the set up seemed to take an hour or so, when it usually took 10 to 15 minutes. wish I remembered what day / year that was.

I’m saying he never played the festival again because he died.

I just messaged an acquaintance who used to review jazz in Chicago. He found that in 1994 [11 years before Smith's death] Smith was supposed to appear as the extra special guest with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra on the last night of the Chicago Jazz Festival, but that the Orchestra played without him after Smith was disappointed with the organ's sound. Smith was never re-booked at the festival to make up that cancellation.
So even tho he was on stage for awhile, Jimmy Smith isn't in the trapper keeper.
jazz institute's listing for that day:

I haven't listened to The Sermon; will have to give that one a whirl. But I love Back at the Chicken Shack, Midnight Special and his record with Wes Montgomery, The Dynamic Duo.

I mean I've got two screens, so when someone mentions a map or something we're reviewing I just look over at my other screen and pretend I've got the map pulled up instead of people talking about coachella or the costco food court

I am trying to see Makaya McCraven at the symphony center tn but it is sold out. In the past year I've seen him at Tonic Room for $30 and the Elastic Arts center for like $10 (although Greg Ward was technically the bandleader here). Neither was a particularly tough ticket.
Bummer I guess.

yeah, fingers crossed. There are some upper balcony seats but imo defeats the point of seeing jazz. Gotta watch the dudes vibe up close.

I feel like 50% of the time I hear a trumpet solo and go "Damn, who is that?" the answer is Freddie Hubbard. But for some reason I hadn't tried one of his bandleader LPs yet. This one, from his fusion/soul-jazz period, was excellent - an instant favorite.

We were supposed to go to a local jazz show tonight but our babysitter cancelled last minute because of a GI thing. Really bummed - would have been a nice way to kick off my shows this year as well.
