Neighbors complained that the meeting wasn’t a genuine attempt to address people’s issues with the park being privatized and closed to the public for weeks at a time so festival owners can profit, said Karina Solano, who lives a few blocks from Douglass Park.

Rather than answering questions on the festival’s safety plan or taking notes about people’s gripes with the festival, Fisher made several rude remarks toward meeting attendees and “laughed in our faces” when people voiced issues, Solano said.

At one point, according to the Chicago Reader’s coverage of the meeting, Fisher questioned whether the residents could “understand pure English.”

The simple proposal for the Sox losing like 4 home games is that the last ~2 weeks of the season they get home games. Parity in the shcedule and shit.

CBS news this morning ran another story about trying to get riot fest cancelled, it seems that since the petition didn't work, activists are directly tweeting at the headliners and other acts on the lineup to convince the bands to pull out of the festival

i haven't read the article, but these people must be delusional to think tweeting's going to have an impact.

they need to deal with riot fest happening this year and then have an offseason strategy for next year. i don't know how they don't understand how this works.

If I lived near to Douglas Park, did not give a shit about this music and had to contend with multiple fests ruining the grass or not properly cleaning up the area, I'd be pissed too. I don't think tossing some free tickets at people in the neighborhood is the best response, but what do I know

Exactly no other neighborhood in the city has to put up with that much disruption to their park all throughout the summer. The fests need to get the fuck out of Douglas Park next year.

Yep! None of the trains go there. I think Reggie’s has done a shuttle bus to shows there, but that will be packed if that actually happens.

edit: unless Metra goes somewhere near there? I have no idea, I never take Metra

I think the Fire use to have a shuttle from the Orange line stop at Midway to Seatgeek. If Riot does move they could do something similar.

Wasn't Riot Fest the first of the three festivals that currently use Douglass Park? Are the other two not catching as much heat because they are smaller (at least in name)? Even if Riot Fest moves they still have two other festivals to contend with. Seems to me they need to be working on the park district and their alderperson if they want any real change.

yeah, i've been curious about this too. i don't follow those other festivals, but none of the articles have really mentioned them other than in passing. i just figure riot fest is getting the brunt of this because it was the first one, it's already been kicked out of a park, it's the biggest name, and it wasn't until after the 2nd fest that residents were like "oh, there's another one???" but aside from the dreadful community meeting, i figure all 3 fests there have similar issues.

Pace ran a shuttle during Fire games, but it's been out of commission since COVID.

I wondered this too, because without this other two festivals coming in after, this probably would have been less of an issue.

The southern half of Douglass Park has been damaged by large crowds and heavy equipment brought in for a series of massive music festivals. The fields have been trampled, leaving the grass dead and soil compacted. Portions of the grass turf have been torn up by stage equipment and vehicles, with tire marks left in the ground. Trash is strewn across the grounds, and broken glass bottles remain scattered across the athletic field and landscaping.

Despite the pleas of hundreds of Lawndale and Little Village residents, Douglass Park will remain in this state until after the summer ends.

Though the season’s first festival for Douglass Park was the Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash on June 17, the damage there will not be repaired until after Riot Fest in the fall, “when growing conditions for grass are most favorable,” said Park District spokesperson Michele Lemons.

So yeah, they're losing access to a clean and nice looking park for a bulk of the summer.
