Just to be clear, I said it wouldn't surprise me. Not advocating for a Julien Baker AOTY sweep across all music blogs/publications, nor am I hoping she interrupts SZA at the Grammys to steal her Best New Artist award. SHE GOT A GRAMMY?

Listened to the King Krule album once and I don't get it. I'll go even hotter: it's boring Its basically the Q4 Father John Misty album of 2017. Only it doesn't suck.

i didn't realize that the lorde album was quite this highly thought of by critics/media. i listen to it constantly because my daughter and i both like it, but i was shocked COS had it 1 today and now i'm reassessing everything.

also, both julien baker and fever ray are contenders for my top spot this year. but i'm worried that i'm showing later in the year release bias.

Papa John is actually touching on real issues going on in society right now, including social media usage and the divides in politics. Granted, the album should be like 15 minutes shorter than it is, but at least it's actually relevant to the world around us, which in my view, makes good art. King Krule has made the same album twice now and my guess is that if he wasn't from across the pond Pitchfork wouldn't be promoting him as hard as he has been. Also that album needs to be 15-20 minutes shorter as well. I don't get why people think it's breaking some sort of new ground either.

Honestly is the best pop album cover to cover this year. Granted it's a light field, but still

FJM is the musical equivalent of an eye roll.

Agree to disagree on FJM, he's way overblown in music right now and most people are eating it up idiotically. His new album is pretentious and boring, and isn't nearly as thought provoking as people want to believe it is. I'm not saying King Krule is or isn't that, but it's far more interesting than Tillman's buffoonery, and doesn't try to be provocative or topical. The Ooz lyrically is superior in every way to Pure Comedy, and while it's not the most uplifting listen of the year, it has far more meat on it than PC. I think what everyone doesn't like about it, and can't get passed, are the vocals. If he sounded like FJM everyone would probably be eating it up.

I don't like the most recent FJM enough to really defend it, but at least it has some memorable songs which is more than I can say for King Krule.

I don't quite get calling the new FJM boring but the new King Krule not boring. There's at least some sort of tonal change throughout Pure Comedy. It didn't feel like I was listening to the same drone over and over again. The songs on The Ooz really don't have much of a distinction between them, and at the very least they all drone the same way over and over again. Instrumentally and vocally, I find Pure Comedy interesting and enjoyable to listen to from start to finish, despite the fact that maybe 20 minutes could be cut from the album. I get saying that the King Krule album is good but saying it really isn't just the vocals that are putting people off on that album.

My weak stance is that The Ooz is at least interesting to me. Pure Comedy is both a chore AND pretentious, real back-pattery. I don't know that I'll ever feel the urge to put on King Krule, and I am not into his 'thing,' but his 'thing' doesn't make me roll my eyes, or make me feel condescended to.

Which is like saying an album isn't good but still has some memorable songs.

I'd totally watch more Scrubs if Tillman was in it.

Trash movie in hindsight, but anytime I hear New Slang or Such Great Heights it's the first thing I think of.

Listened to the King Krule album once and I don't get it. I'll go even hotter: it's boring this take used to be hot but it's sat on the windowsill for so long that someone's gone and snatched it up with grandma's pie

Jason Biggs fucked that take and now Eugene Levy says we can't talk about that take anymore.

The Skinny Top 50 Albumsthis list is more in line with our tastes than most posted so far at least interesting to start their best of 2017 spotify playlist with the 13 minute song from the father john misty album that no one should listen to out of sequence.
