I have very little experience actually dressing dudes but need to spiff up my bf for a couple weddings we have coming up, any suggestions? Some of you have met him but imagine a slightly stockier version of me. Was thinking of going to Bonobos? Idk If you aren't sure what to get him, I would go to Nordstrom (the one at NorthBridge, ideally). The sales people there are super helpful, and then you aren't confined to one brand.

Bonobos is often aimed at smaller dudes from my (limited) experience there but if you can find pants in their athletic fit, that would probably be what you’re looking for.

Department stores are almost always the way to go. I may be biased because I used to work at one but you get so many better options when you start there. If you need to specialize you can go to more specific stores.

I'm wearing some Bonobos stretch chinos in the athletic fit right now. Whenever I have to bend over to pick something up off the floor, I think of how much I like them. Def recommend trying out some pants at Bonobos. Oh, and shoes? Allen Edmonds is having their biggest annual sale right now. Prices won't be this low again until next year at this time.

Ok so we can all agree that we should spend more than $20 on jeans but less than $300. Good work everyone.

Worthy of note I got a pair of jeans that was like $120 but I had a gift card/discount and they're pretty life changing.

I do think a stop at Nordstrom makes sense just to get measured

The shoes are where to start. Even with a big discount, Allen Edmonds can be a bit of sticker shock for dudes who don't typically spend money on shoes. Does he have a wide foot? Johnston and Murphy has some of my favorite dress shoes that are a step above florsheim's but not quite to Allen Edmonds levels. If he doesn't have a suit I recommend taking him to a mens warehouse or somewhere similar to at least get his measurements done. Some of the Macy's standard brands are really nice for suits and don't necessarily require as much of an investment, since it sounds like he doesn't wear suits a lot

A large part of my job used to be getting grumpy 35+ year old men to dress nicely and pick out clothes that they both found comfortable and looked good wearing. It was so much fun and is all I miss about retail. Several guys only came in the store when I was working. I frequently wonder if they've bought any pants since 2016

Yeah the endgame on that one was more for dressing up jeans/khakis and being generally nicer attire rather than for a suit, though I think they’d still work alright in a pinch

Are Allen Edmonds actually comfortable? Yes. I've got 6 or 7 pairs, including one pair of made-to-order boots made out of natural cordovan. The thing is you HAVE to get fitted for Allen Edmonds shoes (or Alden or whatever brand). Most men do not wear the correct size shoes, and that (along with quality) is what causes a lot of discomfort. I've gotten myself fitted a few times at the Allen Edmonds store--a necessity for these shoes, especially since they make different shoes on different lasts, which means sizing for one model will be different than it is for another model--and I've got fucked up feet for sizing, but none of my dress shoes from them are ever uncomfortable. I can wear them all day easily.

I don't love the square toe? This is a fair criticism. I’ll keep looking. Based on your Instagram picture of him I’m gonna guess he’s a 46L in suits tell me if I’m right this is my favorite game
