I have to come up with a work gift for our grab bag thing. I'm thinking of being lazy and getting a LH/Schubas gift card again. Or some sort of alcohol. Also y'all have work Christmas parties? We're having one with a strict 2 drink maximum before 3pm, which I'm not sure anyone will follow. does this mean everyone has to have 2 drinks before 3pm? I don't know but I have to meet with 2 kids that day so probably not me!

We've done the white elephant thing for our work department for like 10 years now. I used to buy some alcohol for it, but now I'd rather just buy what I want and not risk getting some lame gift instead. Also, our department party is at Hofbrauhaus this year? I'm guessing they don't have many food options. meaning you buy a white elephant gift then pull the gift you brought out for yourself?

We're having one with a strict 2 drink maximum before 3pm, which I'm not sure anyone will follow. We had our xmas party last Friday. They switched to only wine and beer during lunch, and then open bar afterward. Then there was an afterparty. I ended up getting harassed by a coworker, escaping, taking the wrong train, magically getting in a cab, and then forgetting almost all of the conversations I had. Good times.

Nah, I'd just spend the money on something I want and not take part.

I still get invited (and usually still go) to the xmas party of a division of the state agency I worked for 25 yrs ago; a bunch of other "alumni" show up as well. It has gotten more cramped over the yrs, as the party was moved from larger downtown restaurants / bars to its apparently permanent home as of 3 yrs ago in the back room of Monk's pub. It's set for the end of next week, and there's a small cover, but no one brings gifts, thankfully. edit: this is the party where a yr or two ago, someone took a picture of me and a former colleague who is the father of a friend of tweet's, and I posted it on facebook for tweet's benefit.

Our corporate and Chicago offices used to have a Christmas party at Maggiano's every other year and now they just cater in lunch one day during December. No booze. And definitely no #fomo for those of us who work remotely.

My company had a huge party at SPiN last Friday that I opted not to attend... haven't gone in a few years.

Our company Christmas sounds like a ton of fun and I really want to go but it always ends up the weekend of Day for Night ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
they rent out a ballroom in a pretty fancy hotel, have a fully open bar and a buffet, usually get a covers band to play, everyone dresses up really fancy. They throw it for both our office and this smaller office we have in College Station.

Our company has a holiday luncheon done buffet-style with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, etc. The food's not bad. We don't have any holiday parties or anything, other than a White Elephant gift exchange in our department.
The last time I went I got a box of chocolate covered pretzel sticks. I thought I would hate them because I didn't like pretzels, but they were good!

I'm told it should be sparkly.

I once saw a DNA testing deal on Groupon.. was pretty excited to try it.. till I found out that the company (which wasn't 23andme) was a total scam, as they found out that I was 85% or so from Sudan and Saudi Arabia (!) whereas one side of my family is from Germany/Poland/Russia and the other half Irak/Iran...

As for Christmas gifts, my boyfriend's Mom and step Dad love small things so we've got a a nice batch og cute crafty stuff like a scarf, a wooden cutting board, some maple wine etc
For his Dad and step Mom, we went for one single gift which is a night (+breakfast) in a nice hotel that has a spa and is a 2 hour drive from where the live

I tend to prefer giving/receiving "experiences" rather than material stuff.
On a different note, why in 2017 is it still so hard to find a Christmas card addresses to "My mother and step-Dad"/ or "My father and step-Mom"?

in my time at my current job, we've gone from holiday parties in the building to parties out of the building to no party and this year back to a party somewhere else. this year's holiday shindig is thursday. so i'll make an appearance and then jet off to The Last Jedi.
best corporate holiday party i've attended was my ex's at the field museum some years ago.

This is an ideal long weekend.

Yeah, we have to figure out when we are watching Elf, which has been the highlight of the last few years for me. I don't think we can do the Santa L train this year unfortunately.

I fucking love the Denver Botanic Gardens. I can only imagine how cool it looks at Christmas. I think our plan is to spend this weekend getting drunk and going to a drag show in Key West, which is verifiably the gayest Key, so I'm pretty excited for that. Other than that, I'm in an online class that starts today so hooray for one week of winter break.

Jewish Christmas (i.e. going to the movies and getting Chinese food) is a damn fine way to spend the holiday if you ask me. The kids in our blended-faith family will be with other adults for the most part this year.
Thursday: PTO Friday: PTO + watch The Force Awakens as a refresher Saturday: The Last Jedi + some sort of hearty home-cooked supper Xmas Eve: Football, Dinner w/ Mrs. DoSo at Prime Meats, followed by homemade eggnog and It's a Wonderful Life Xmas Day: Maybe a morning movie, then very casual dinner with brother-in-law and wife at their place in CT

Scoots, if you can recommend a brunch place that can accommodate a largish group on New Year's Day, lmk. I think we're kinda in your neighborhood.

In my neighborhood, you can call ahead to Denver Biscuit Company to have them set aside a larger table. I think they'd be more inclined to do this if the group is more than 6. Otherwise you can check to see if Departure has any spots open - pretty sure they take reservations. Outside of the neighborhood, I'd check: Old Major Duo Linger
