Mando finale was super stupid and I am here for it. "This is the lava river!"

I thought the Mando finale was great. They brought the Darksaber to live action TV. Fucking incredible. And I'm glad they didn't kill off Gustavo Fring (yes I know that isn't his name) because he plays an incredible villain.

Alright I bought my tickets, I'm seeing this tomorrow after work. I liked it. There were issues but nothing I got hung up on. The movie made me feel just about every emotion possible and that's pretty much what I want from a Star Wars movie in 2019.

Wrote up this whole dumb thing and deleted but... These last two movies have been equally divisive from my limited perspective. I feel like the Gen Xers, for the most part, just wanted cool lightsaber and spaceship battles (to relive their youth as it were). The younger crowd really wanted to see the directors and writers blow the doors off the whole franchise. In the end, all three trilogies have fairly groan-worthy narratives but plenty of mindless adventure and eye candy. B+

I mean it is objectively sad that they had this amazing opportunity where they could have told basically any story they wanted and chose to just regurgitate the same one George Lucas already told.

I guess I’m a gen x-er and wanted a better story rather than a bunch of cool fights, and I know a bunch of people my age that felt the same way. Johnson did a great job with TLJ, particularly with the dynamic between Rey and Ben. Abrams doing a basic reset pissed me off and offset the more cool aspects of the new movie.

I'm an Xer and I wanted the story to go in an interesting direction. I thought Rian Johnson's vision was great. Rise of Skywalker felt like everyone was selling out to the losers who were mad about TLJ.

Should’ve given the whole trilogy to Johnson. Should’ve had a plan. Should’ve written a story that didn’t require so much work from your audience.
That said I’m on goodson’s team. Movie was good and stupid and best if not thought about too much.

From what I've read JJ had a very broad map of the story but they allowed Johnson to ignore it and do his own thing and have been scrambling ever since. I like TLJ and where the story was going but it sounds like nobody at Disney / Lucas Film had any real control over the entire narrative and everybody freaked out after reception TLJ received.

I thought Kelly Marie Tran's character was totally annoying in TLJ, but it was really shit what they did to her in Skywalker. Give her a better story? Nah. Let's basically write her out.

Chris Terrio's explanation for this was truly terrible. They wanted a character at the resistance base who could play off of Carrie's non sequiturs. This, of course, does very little to explain why they brought in Merry for some of the peanut gallery lines that could've just as easily gone to Rose.

Dominic Monaghan threw a LOT of shade about that at a recent press event too. clearly he was originally set up to do more and then got effectively cut out

anyone read about this "jjcut" of the movie?
not that it would be any better but some of it checks against leaks from earlier in the year

im reading it now (https://www.reddit.com/r/saltierthancrait/comments/eisnd8/heres_what_ive_been_told_from_a_source_that/
the inner corporate battling for JJ as an auteur of nostalgia and revivalism is honestly fascinating. trying to steal him before he could save DC is such a hilariously stupid and fun narrative. everything else seems like typical production meddling and generally poorly planned timelines.
none of the new narrative in the "jj cut" sounds like it wouldve made the film much better other than giving it more time to breathe because the editing is truly chopped to pieces and drives me insane. just giving us a moment to understand some things -- that Leia force-projected the memory of Han, that Rey was hiding a dangerous power from the moment she was training at the beginning of the film, etc. would've solved a lot of the rushed narrative that makes the whole thing feel messy.

imagine hayden thinking he finally could redeem himself and his role is cut honestly the line "bring balance back to the force, as i once did" is cringier and less thought out than anything he says in the prequels

Rewatched Empire
In my memory it was like 45 minutes of fun antics from Yoda rummaging through granola bars, serving Luke horrible soup, etc. Sadly that's not the case.

it feels like there are more hit pieces out on TROS than there are TLJ already (granted many of the TROS haters are explicitly blaming TLJ for fucking up the story in 9) but it is remarkable how quickly every single one of these video essays quickly devolves to plain old misogyny, homophobia, and racism, masqueraded as an off-brand Cinema Sins.
i tried entertaining 4 or 5 of them from "big name" youtube accounts and every single one of them used the term 'Mary Sue' probably over twenty times each as a point of argument about character development.

I don't know adding Palpatine's master is kinda just as dumb as bringing Palpatine back. They really could've just had an amazing story really exploring the Rey Kylo bond. They didn't need to add another villain.

The fact that this story and what we actually got are so vastly different just goes to show that Disney bungled this whole thing from the beginning. How hard would it has been to at least lay out some basics, get buy-in from everybody involved, and then actually stick to the plan? Instead we got Star Wars written like a game of telephone and not surprisingly it turned into a jumbled mess.

That leak is dope and at the very least takes some risks and is creative. Very possible it would’ve sucked, but upon changing course from that they were guaranteeing themselves a disappointing product.
