i definitely like the Finn/Rose/droids and Poe/Rey/Chewy dynamic A LOT more than what TROS did with all of them together. and i really like the idea of Kylo actually have to visually endure the memories of his past (both Sith and Jedi alike. they kinda did that a bit with Han but we're supposed to infer that Leia forced that on him, i think.) as on the nose as it would have been, being haunted by force ghosts throughout his journey would've been fun and a creative take on the concept.
They really could've just had an amazing story really exploring the Rey Kylo bond. They didn't need to add another villain.
i kinda wish they had tied in the Plagueis stuff at least (we can argue that Abrams did do that with the aforementioned force-baby powers that Palpatine might have had to help make Rey, but boy is it unclear.) if that's what Palp's master became after being betrayed, i think that'd be a perfectly fine albeit goofy element to a hokey tale.
but yes after 8, i really just wanted Kylo to be the baddy and he and Rey just be the representation of balance (which again, Abrams kinda tried but misses the mark on it a lot.) if we must do Palpatine and all the Sith, having them be filtered into Kylo in some way would've been more interesting than just magical revival powers.
100% agree that any hatred towards the sequel trilogy as a whole really needs to be laid at Disney/LucasFilms' feet. each film has its own writing and directing problems but the continuity is the source of most issues and that's on the producers for not overseeing, especially after seeing how well Marvel managed it for 10+ years.
i wonder if the project was initially "3 directors who get full creative control over everything and get to collaborate on it as they see fit" and then the producers just never checked in again until Trevorrow had to step down and twitter trolls threw a fit about Johnson. which at that point was too little too late and bringing back a nostalgia spammer like Abrams probably only complicated the situation.
I don't know adding Palpatine's master is kinda just as dumb as bringing Palpatine back.

The fact that this story and what we actually got are so vastly different just goes to show that Disney bungled this whole thing from the beginning. How hard would it has been to at least lay out some basics, get buy-in from everybody involved, and then actually stick to the plan? Instead we got Star Wars written like a game of telephone and not surprisingly it turned into a jumbled mess.
