Opening set by @ (literally their name is the @ sign) blew me away. Best set by an unknown-to-me opener in years (maybe since seeing Liz Cooper open for Phosphorescent like 5 years ago?). Insane and kooky 3-part harmonies, freak-folky but also head-banging with some emo-adjacent sections and wild guitar solos? Honestly reminded me of Phish sometimes and reminded me of, like, Mega Bog mixed with Ratboys? Only thing harder than to describe their live sound is to find them on the Internet. Took me like 10 minutes of googling before stumbling on their bandcamp page, here: atcomputer.bandcamp.com/album/mind-palace-music i just gave this a listen and enjoyed it. but what is the deal with these witness protection acts with terrible names? like, do you want people to find your music? Legit the hardest time I've ever had with one of these bands. Like, give it a try, it's hilariously impossible. It's actually kind of a bummer to me, because I really enjoyed their set and want them to be successful, but it's gonna be a huge uphill battle if they stick to that name. Like, I wanted to hear more and actively searched for 10 minutes to make that happen. 99.9% of people who a.) actually even hear you, already a bar to clear, b.) absolutely will not have the patience to do the same. Sigh.

Looks like VW did a little "Margaritaville" in St. Louis the other night. That's what I'm talkin' about...

Looks like VW did a little "Margaritaville" in St. Louis the other night. That's what I'm talkin' about... I went last night. Had a great time. The band sounds great and they are so technically proficient it’s crazy. Loved the mini ST set at the beginning. Haven’t seen cape cod since Lolla 09 when he dedicated it to John Hughes. Might have that wrong but that’s how I remember it. The request thing goes a little stale but ending with ya hey made up for it. Enjoy the two nights in Chicago.

Did people just add nonsense to the encore on setlist.fm or did they actually do that many snippets of covers: www.setlist.fm/setlist/vampire-weekend/2024/saint-louis-music-park-maryland-heights-mo-7bab4a44.html

Like I said, it got old. Some chompers in front of us were screaming “santaria.” I yelled fuck no. The Gloria thing is the Laura branigan version because the last time vw was in stl was the night the blues won the cup and that was the song of the run. Obviously didn’t go that night.

Branigan apparently never played Saint Louis. The Blues thing happened 15 years after Branigan, who had been born in NY, went to school in NY, and died in NY, died in NY.
Can verify that she did play Chicagofest when it was on Navy Pier, and Atlantic's 40th at MSG.

They've done it every show this tour. According to setlist fm prior to last night the last show they played it was Red Rocks. They've been doing the cover request encore thing at every show.

VW was good not great last night. They sound terrific but you really have to love the new album to love this live show.
On their next tour, I can't imagine more than like two of these songs remain live staples.

My takes:
Cocaine Cowboy rocks and is fun. The request section is not necessary in a world where you aren’t playing Hannah Hunt every single night but kind of fits with this era of the band in some way I think. Great show last night. The 2019 tour was their “spring of 77” and I think it’s going to leave you disappointed if you think that’s coming back with their current lineup, but the new album songs sound good live. Excited to do it all over again tonight

I agree with a lot of the sentiment already shared, this was a good not great live show and this is the thinnest iteration of the band yet. That's not a knock by any means, VW has just set the bar so high previously it was going to be impossible to maintain. Some of the new songs were great live but others sucked the energy out of the set (the Surfer). I'm glad Chicago is getting two nights because they left a ton of meat on the bone for tonight, looking forward to it.

What can I say, after 16 years of seeing this band, I’m a sucker for them. I thought last night was great (I do really love OGWAU). Cocaine cowboys I think is cool but the whole bags thing is unnecessary. I think if they combined that with some more covers and axed the 15 mins of request, the show would flow a lot better.

The Cocaine Cowboys thing is way better than the half-assed covers.
Overall, very good show. Agree that the FotB tour was their zenith as a live band. Baio is the star for sure. Love the reworked Sympathy and Flower Moon as always is one of their best live tracks. Mary Boone sounds awesome live. Glad I went (last time I saw them was 5 years ago in CDMX) but no particular fomo about missing night 2. Hope everyone who is doubling up has a great time and that you get a lot of Contra bangers.

I've seen Prince play "Purple Rain" and Princess play "Purple Rain" but never VW play "Purple Rain".
Because I've never seen VW play anything.
But if the resale market tanks in October or whenever they're at MSG, I might be down for that.

Agreed with everyone that is was a good show that was not quite as good as the standard that they have unreasonably kept.
Cocaine Cowboys is bad as both as a "fun goofy experiment" and "music" and theres no pay off to the bags element, cover section worked better last night as it was only about 5 minutes long.
I think that they generally had a good idea to have 2 drummers, violin and sax, but haven't spent enough time actually tinkering with the arrangements of their older catalogue to take advantage of it. Could see a version of this band being much better on a spring tour after a few more months locking stuff down. 2 drummers in particular seemed kinda pointless with the current arrangement..
Did not go in expecting to like it but Princess was really awful. Pitchy, funkless, sexless, humorless . There isn't a single professional wedding band in any major American city that wouldn't perform better Prince covers. Baffling stuff. Would much rather have seen Cheri Oteri cover the Eagles.
The Ferris Wheel on the other hand rocked and the double vodka sodas left of the stage were very strong

Because I've never seen VW play anything. were you at Pitchfork festival in 2008 or 2012? they played the small stage in 2008 on the Saturday, and they played a larger stage in 2012.
